Thanks Cato. I would really like to keep Strickland, but he cannot stay on the field so I guess it's not worth keeping him around
I was actually hoping they'd release Rhodes, Strickland, and Sheppard this off-season. Looks like it' two down, and one to go! Bringing somebody in with less talent isn't an issue, as long as you have somebody who plays with heart.
We did have the best secondary in the NFL last year and those players make up half of it. I sure hope we can find people to fill in their role. I agree that we need an upgrade over Rhodes and Shepperd, but we have other holes on this team that need to be addressed. I think the team should pull a "Vilma" on Shepperd if we can keep him for cheap and for a short contract. He played pretty well this season minus both Indy games.
You do realize that this isn't Madden, right? How do you intend on trading up from 28 to 2, and grab Berry? Unless of course you plan on giving away the first day draft picks for this year and some of next year.
Here is the question. What is Rhodes worth? His salary is high and I don't think he is a probowl player. Would the Raiders give us a third rounder? Probably not.
Here is the same question I asked in another thread: Who do you replace him with? Chances are, you're not going to get anywhere near the same talent level in that position. All this bullshit about wanting players with "heart" is friggin' ridiculous at this point. Yes, I'd love Rhodes to play like Leonhard. But I'd also like Leonhard to be as tall and as fast as Rhodes. I like guys who act like they love the game and appreciate their fortune in life. At the same time, talent wins games. I had really thought Alex Rodriguez had finally proven that point last November once and for all. "Heart" is nice. Talent wins. Kerry Rhodes has talent.
at times he plays like a misplaced qb playing at safety. it just doesn't seem to work - he's never around the ball and is constantly found out of position imho. a solid safety in the draft would be better than this light-weight
Yeah, he really lit up the joint when he was tackled from behind by a fullback in the Cincy game. Tackles like a girl, isn't "speedy" by any stretch of the imagination, and doesn't want to be here. He celebrates really well after big plays- too bad that he fails to recognize that in some cases the play is still going on. Douchebag to the Nth Degree.
Right, and I forgot to add- Alio, just because he's tall doesn't mean that he's the next coming of Christ.
Getting rid of Rhodes may be an addition by subtraction. He is tweeting about Revis having to go through what he went through? He hopes Revis can handle it as well as he did? This tool has even said how he took Revis under his wing. I'll bet Ryan wants Rhodes as far away from Revis as he can get him. Sheppard with his 10 mil for this year is cut. Maybe Strickland is gone too. Then Rhodes. With the uncapped year, and so many players going to RFA instead of being FA's, it won't be easy to find replacements. If Rhodes is a cancer, and I think that is the way Ryan is thinking right now... we could be looking at a patchwork D backfield next year. The Jets will probably have to overpay some DB who gets cut for the same reason Sheppard will be... a big salary hit that teams can now avoid by cutting a player with no cap penalty. I can definitely see the Jets going for a DB in the first round now. It's starting to look like a big hole in the roster.
I find that a lot of the time people use "heart" (which is kind of a silly term) when they mean things like intelligence, awareness, technique, preparation... things that require dedication and persistence. "Heart" is vague. I'll take an intelligent, aware, prepared technician over a purely talented player any day of the week at almost any position.
And again, except for the way he tackles (speaking of which, watch Calvin Pace make a tackle) everyone's attacks on him are regarding his personality. Fuck. Personality. Talent wins ballgames. Unless you can replace him with equal or greater talent it is wholesale stupid to dump Rhodes. And this ridiculous bullshit of taking things like a fourth rounder for him? I am really glad we have intelligent people in our organization, because the average person on this board would have to ride a short yellow bus to Florham Park. That said, given how Ryan is talking, I have a bad feeling they're going to move Rhodes. It's not a good move to me, but I think that's what is going to happen.
Not even close. Did you even attempt to read the post with some comprehension skills? Come on man. You're better than that. EDIT (additions): For the record, that wasn't Rhodes that posted about Revis. Honestly, I don't even know who that was. That tweet didn't come from Rhodes though. Of course. You want guys who put in work. But no one gives Rhodes any credit for putting in work, which he does. And people on this board clearly mean "heart" in whatever vague sense they believe it to be. Talking about his tweeting, or off-field endeavors pretty clearly illustrates that.
If you have a cancer, what do you do? You cut it out. Ryan obviously has big problems with Rhodes despite his talent... like dancing on the field when a live ball is on the ground. Listen to Ryan's press conference. He talks about what a player has to do to be Jet, or "You're gone." Rhodes is gone.
Talent wins ballgames- Sherry used to have it. Then he started selling suits. He showed flashes of it this year, but nothing to the point where we could argue that he's truly talented. Too many "whiffs" this year, and if you notice, more often than not his "tackle" turns out be Sherry grabbing he guy by his ankles or laying on his when he's already down. I don't care about personality either- you can be the biggest douchebag, but if you can play and not interfere with the team atmosphere I'll welcome you with open arms. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that this team has a need for a soft-tackling, now-average, me-first safety as it moves to get the ultimate prize.
Amen, Kerry has talent, so whatever you think about his off-the-field endeavours, all I care about is his play on the field and his play for a majority of his tenure here has been All-Pro, pro-bowl level. All this KR bashing has become a bit irrational in my opinion. So what if the guy likes to do things during his downtime and in the off-season? He's smart enough to actually see how short an NFL player's career is and has goals that he wants to work towards after football. If you had a career where the average length was 3.5 years, you would be a fool not to have a plan for yourself after football. As long as it's not effecting your job performance who's business is it to tell you what you can and can't do or that you should be fired?
Kerry has talent....but he's not using it...and hasn't used it all season. He was benched for a reason. I'm pretty sure Rex will find a way to extract Rhodes from this roster.....it's not a personality thing, it's his lack of production and focus.
