I think Edwards and Cotch have a chance to be a better duo. Edwards can replicate alot of what key was able to do and Cotch is better than Chrebet.
The one thing I like about this year's squad over the '98 team is the youth. We have that "we don't give a fuck factor" that the '98 team didn't have. That team obviously had more experience, but there's something about this team (the '09 version) that I feel strongly about I've never felt in ALL my years as a fan. Another thing, Peyton doesn't have Terrell Davis, and that's huge.
Exactly. The 98 team had a small window of opportunity. They were a veteran team with most of their best players over 30 years of age. Think of how amazing it is that we are even comparing that admittedly great 98 team to a team with a rookie quarterback. I agree with the obvious consensus that this defense is definately better than the 98 defense was (although that defense was very solid and maybe a bit underrated on this board) while the 98 offense was vastly supperior to this offense. The 98 team will always be especially magical to me because I was 13 years old at the time and it was the first great Jets team I ever got to see . . . Having said that, this team really has me believing that they can win a superbowl and complete a dream season for the ages. Regardless of what happens from here on out, I'll always have tremendous love and admiration for both teams..
Agree about Cotch but Edwards isn't close to as good at having the courage to extend his arms going across the middle with a safety about to unload on him. Edwards seems much more comfortable on the outside one on one where he can box out with his body. Key was an incredibly tough reciever and was willing to take a shot from a safety and extend his arms.
Edwards always makes the difficult catch in traffic, it's those wide open ones down the field that he can't handle. There's no doubt '98 Key was alot better than '09 Braylon.
The '98 team was very well balanced and superior to the '09 Jets, IMO. They really were good enough to win it all which made it so painful when they didn't.
i love the fact we are talking about 1998 again because that was a great year for this franchise although it didn't quite go all the way.... i really feel like this year we can redeem that and I'm getting more excited each day!!!!!!!~ LETS GO FELLAHS....HERE'S TO THE SUPERBOWL!!!
98 jets team was better...98 beat better teams, they had a better record and a darn good offense...defense was middle of the pack, but they could play well enough to beat any team. This team has an over rated defense (just my opinion due to the few cupcake games you played and you had the luxury of 2 end of the season games against teams back ups or teams not game planning due to playoffs). This 09 team has 7 losses and a rookie QB that is playing like a rookie QB...Revis is in beast mode, but the rest of your secondary is suspect...see the chargers game, Gates was having his way with your team...Rex did a great job of playing all out blitz in the 2nd half, but too many dropped passes, missed FG's and stupid penalties on the part of the Chargers kept your team in the game (I am not implying your defense didn't have something to do with it too).
I'll take this team over the 98 team simply because of the future we have in place. I also feel better about this game than I did about the Broncos game in 98. The Colts are a similar team on the surface (future HOF QB, huge win streak to start the season before falling late and finishing 14-2), but that Broncos offense was balanced. TD led that team to its Super Bowl victories. This Colts offense is much more one dimensional, although with Manning under center, it's one hell of a dimension. As far as the above poster who said it's "just his opinion" that our defense is overrated, congratulations; your opinion is now worthless. The rest of our secondary has had a phenomenal season, and the faltering in that Charger game was due more to scheming. Do yourself a favor. Find an encyclopedia for the NFL and look up "adjustments, halftime".
Did you just start watching the Colts a couple of weeks ago? Their starters were in until midway through the 3rd. We had 2 and a half quarters of football against backups in those last two games.
You can't get on the D for the losses they had. They were on the feild too long cause the offense can't stay on the feild. If TOP was more balanced in the games the Jets D gave up a last minute drive, the Jets would have had a better chance of winning. The D is not over rated.
Not really, I started in 82. But did you watch the Colts and Jets game? It's a moot point for me to have that conversation with you...everyone on your board with the exception of you knows the Colts did not play many of their starters and Freeney only played 8-12 downs for the entire game...and he got 2 sacks on Sanchise.
I don't disagree with you at all...Your D typically plays well...but the lack of offense is why the 98 Jets are better. Your team will need the ball for about 38+ minutes to beat the Colts...if the time of possesion is equal or comparable, this means the Colts are blowing the Jets out...
It's Sanchize, and he was unblocked. It's not like he bowled over our line- The wrong protection scheme was called.
Okay, I said over rated because your team played the happless Bills 2x, Falcons without Ryan and lost, the Bucs, and Oakland (I won't get into Indy and Cincy when they had nothing to play for). I understand teams play whomever their schedule dictates, but to tout the number 1 defense, have 7 losses and you got in because the last 2 teams had nothing to play for...I think the media is attempting to sell a game many people other than Indy and New Yorkers are just not interested in. Your team matched up well with the Bengals and Chargers (thanks for that win too), but the Colts match up well against you and it's not the other way around. The Colts started the last 3 years of playoff games off fast...and this doesn't bode well for the Jets...
Thanks for the correction, "Sanchize"... Got it... I don't care if he was unblocked...it's your line job to block him... Of all the people you would leave unblock...Freeney? Really?
The Falcons had Ryan. We also played the Pats (2x), Saints, Texans, Colts, and Chargers - all of whom are top 5 in passing in the league. You're quickly showing that you don't know much about what you're attempting to discuss. Every team has easy teams on there schedule.
Mistakes happen, and that's about it. I was pissed about that, I'm sure they won't be doing that again. Mark was not calling the protection schemes at the time, Nick Mangold was and they both said there was miscommunication. Just like Calvin Pace scaring the shit out of Painter, I'm sure he didn't want that to happen.
