After missing the playoffs the first four years of his NFL career, Jets receiver Braylon Edwards is now one step away from the Super Bowl and loving every minute of it.

"I feel like I'm home," he said. "This is where I was destined to be."

And it looks like the Jets will be his home next season, too. The Jets plan to retain Edwards next season as a restricted free agent, Newsday has learned. According to a source familiar with the team's plans, the Jets will place a contract tender that would require a team to give the Jets first- and third-round picks if it wants to sign Edwards.

Edwards has played five NFL seasons, which would normally make him a free agent in the offseason. But because the NFL is not expected to have a salary cap next year because of stalled negotiations on a new agreement with the players union, free agency goes from four to six seasons, making Edwards a restricted free agent.

The Jets will look to sign Edwards to a long-term contract but at least have the flexibility to sign him to a one-year deal. "Coming from where I've come from, yeah, it's definitely hard to imagine," said Edwards, who has four catches for 56 yards in the Jets' two playoff wins.

    Not bad in my opinion

    Very nice.

The good thing about Braylon is he's got that attitude that he wants to get better. He's got all the tools for sure.

Good! Hopefully people will forget about his 4 drops all season soon, it just seems like he drops a lot because we pass so little. This guy is elite in the run and pass game, and I'm very glad he is back.

I'm not a big Edwards fan. He's lost on downfield throws.

Would have preferred a rookie or a veteran like Boldin or Marshall.

Maybe they're planning on trading him. Can you trade a RFA if he's been tendered? Or do you have to sign him to a contract before he can be traded.

This is really the only option for the Jets. He is a RFA. If they tender him any lower they could lose him. Giving him a new contract is not an option based on his play.

With this, they keep him here, keep him hungry and justify what they gave up. I've been impressed with his physicallity and effort and effectiveness as a blocker.

He just struggles on down field throws. He need to get lasic.

He needs a full season with us for sure. He has had some key drops, but he has also made some nice plays. He's also a great blocker, and one of the main reasons we aren't seeing a loaded box.

I have a feeling he will spend a lot of time this offseason working with Sanchez, which will make him much better next year. This is a good move by the FO.

The Jets shouldn't give up on the promising Edwards for the over-priced Boldin or a headcase like Marshall.

Agreed, I think Edwards is better then Boldin, and younger. Marshall is a top 3 WR but is too much of an idiot to put up with.

A franchise tender means your franchising the player, but he can be signed by other teams if they are willing to compensate accordingly. If the player is offered a minimum of the average of the top five salaries of last season at his position, or 120 percent of the player?s previous year?s salary, he becomes a ?non-exclusive? franchise player and can negotiate with other team. His old team can match a new team's offer, or receive two first-round draft choices if it decides not to match. An "exclusive" franchise player -- not free to sign with another team -- is offered a minimum of the average of the top five salaries at the player's position for the current year as of mid-April (exact date has not been revealed yet), or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, or the average of the top five salaries at his position as of the end of last season -- whichever of the three is greater. Transition Tender, the player?s team must offer a minimum of the average of the top 10 salaries of last season at the player's position or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater. A transition player designation gives the team a first-refusal right to match within seven days an offer sheet given to the player by another team after his contract expires. If the team matches, it retains the player. If it does not match, it receives no compensation (see the Steve Hutchinson deal with the Minnesota Vikings back in 2006 as an example of this).

Good move by the Jets and I think a full offseason and preseason with Sanchize will make him a much larger part of the offense next season.

I think this is a big reason why we keep him obviously the staff feels they can fix this and once that happens he becomes ELITE imo and i believe many others as well.
