I know, I know, it's not draft talk-time just yet. But, Tanny started it.....

Tanny has traded away pics for quality over quantity, at the expense of drafting 2nd tier, back up players. So, here's some insite into the upcoming off season directly from Tanny....

At the end of Tanny's interview on jets.com, he was asked about our 'needs' for next season.

Tanny (allow me to paraphrase) said the team doesn't see themselves as "one player away".

Rather, Tanny then went on to say depth is the most important thing over the course of a 16 game season.

He pointed out that Greene wasn't even active at the start of the season but came off the bench for Leon and is having a huge impact.

So, it looks like Tanny may use THIS upcoming draft, even trading down (or Gholston) for a few more pics to stockpile players.

My thoughts are that 'occasionaly' trading up to grab a Revis, Sanchez, Greene is great, but it would also be great to 'occasionaly' use the draft to stockpile OL, DL, LBs, etc.

As long as ESPN don't show those two retarded brothers when we announce our pic, it will be a small victory.

I think we need to draft an O-lineman early because Faneca will not last forever. I last think that finding a DE is a priority....just because it's a 3-4 doesn't mean we can't have a pass rushing DE. If Jenkins comes back at 400lbs, do we have the players at NT to sustain season long domination in the trenches?

Other than this, WR is still somewhat of an issue....some of these thigns can be addressed in free agency, but some must be addressed in the draft. Rounds 2 and 3 should be used to get an O-lineman and a D-lineman.

Depth along the front 7 is the biggest need this offseason. Would also like them to add an explosive 3rd receiver. I'm a fan of trading down but it'll be interesting to see what kind of value they can get picking so low in each round. I believe our 1st round pick won't be any higher than 25 at this point.

yea that sounds good we do need some depth and sometimes you get lucky and can get a star or atleast a starter late in the draft. As for trading gholston for more picks we would be lucky to get a 6th rounder for him. I dont understand why because we dont need someone everyone here thinks someone else would give something up for him. Its like ever trade scenario involves Rhodes and Gholston.

Why is it everyone's assumption Faneca won't last forever but Woody will? RT is far more of a pressing need then LG at the moment IMO.

I agree DE is a need... we'll have to see who's left in rd 2.

Why the hell should Jenkins come back at 400lbs? The fact he's injured doesn't mean he started working at a McDonalds! He's training with Sal ALoisi plus his diet is under strict control... plus Pouha really stepped up and Green and DeVito can play some NT in energency situations.

Both lines, possibly a safety, rush linebacker, slot receiver, a corner if they let Lito go...there are a few areas that can be upgraded but the great thing is with the amount of talent the team has there is no position that they have to reach for in the first round to fill a gaping hole.

Nice thing about Tanny is that he realized where the value was the last few years and that's trading up. This year, it might be trading down since there's so much value up top. I am hearing a lot about underclassmen coming out to avoid a rookie wage scale, so there should be a lot of talent available.

You think? Might be truth or a double bluff.
I happen to think we will go for depth and once again be active in free agency.

    I am wishfully hoping...

Braylon signs on to be with the Jets
TJ doesn't go berserk and is willing to restructure his contract with an extension
    Resign Lito with restructured contract
Resign the guys we need to.

Depth at OL for Woody & Faneca
Depth at DL for Ellis, Scott, BT,

Long shot - slot receiver. We need a Julian Edelmann

Other than that I think the team is fundamentally sound. I know upgrading to a better corner is a concern but if Lito can stay healthy and he & Lowery go to Revis Island for off season conditioning, they will both come back much improved.

Pass rushing is also a concern but I think another year in Rex's system will improve playmaking abilities of everyone on the defense. Pace isn't a top notch pass rusher but is better than what most teams have.

If Clowney can upgrade his slot abilities, he would be a huge threat too.
Although he constantly gets dissed, I still believe Cotchery is a legitimate #1 WR.

I disagree on the fact we NEED depth... I think we already have quite a lot... let's look at what we have:

    Offense:

QB depth: Ainge, O'Connell. I'm cool with them. Maybe bring in a vet but no one from the draft

RB/FB depth: I'm good with TJ, Leon and Greene for another season. No need to draft a FB, FA is always full of them.

C/OG depth: I'm cool with what we have... Turner has been in this system for 3 years plus he's a capable ST player. Slauson has only been here one year but he's learning under Faneca and Callahan (who recruited him and pushed the Jets to draft him). I think all this points to him at least having a shot to back-up Faneca in year 2.

OT depth: Ok here I agree we need someone. We only have Hunter and he's more of a blocking TE/extra lineman for unbalanced formations... If one of our T gets hurt we are screwed. Plus Woody is old and fat (not a good combo).

TE depth: I'd like to bring him someone as a compliment to Keller but Hartsock is a good blocking TE (plus he'll have a full TC to learn the O calls and not commit penalties).

WR depth: Difficult argument 'cause in todays NFL there are so many different types of WRs. I'd like to bring in someone to replace Woodhead as the slot WR but I'm happy with the other guys. Maybe we can find an upgrade over Clowney... It'll be him vs Allison for the 6th roster spot as a WR.

    Defense:

DE depth: DeVito has proven he is good (plus they gave him a new contract). Pitoitua is a project so yeah I think we need another young DE. 2010 will be the last year for both Ellis and Douglas I think.

NT depth: Jenkins + Pouha + Green (we may keep him if Jenks isn't 100% come september) is very good for me.

OLB deth: here we need someone to split time with B. Thomas (althogu hrecently he has stepped up). I wouldn't be opposed to bringing in A. Thomas in FA.

ILB: Very strong starters, almost unkown backups.. an ILB prospect in the later rds would be cool.

CB: Strickland and Lowery are good #3 and #4, Cole is a solid ST gunner. I'd be happy to replace Coleman but the guy sems to always find a way to stick around.

S: I'm happy with our Safeties. They are hard hitting and capable in the passing game.

So all in all I think the depth we need is:

    1 ILB, 1 OLB, 1 DE, 1 OT

where we may need an upgrade over our currnt depth:

    1 CB, 1 WR, 1 TE

where we might want to upgrade our starters (but I'd be cool with keeping them all):

    1 S over Rhodes

1 CB over Sheppard (but I'd like to re-sign him in the off season)

    1 OLB over Thomas

    1 DE over Douglas

    1 third WR over Clowney

and that's about what the off-season should be about IMO.

It's a shame they shut down the Draft forum on TGG. Used to be some great discussions about draft strategy in there.

MrE just hasn't been the same ever since...

As far as this, yes, we all know it's a deep draft and yes, we all know that depth is paramount, especially since it looks like we'll be unable to make significant inroads into free agency. The change in free agency rules and the fact that a high percentage of FAs are going to be taken off the market by the uncapped year means that Tanny's old strategy simply CAN'T work. He knows that. Even if he wanted to continue adding FAs and using the draft to address a few key positions, this year demands a different approach.

The NFL isn`t stupid ,it`s worth more then most Country`s ,it went through this strike thing once before it helped no -one ,I predict they add a extra week to the owners meetings in MARCH in Lauderdale (if Necessary) and itwillbesettled before Draft day./

we can't be active in free agency....

i do think this draft is going to have to be about stockpiling picks and about quantity of picks since we cannot do anything in free agency

Why do people think anyone would trade for Gholston and give us draft picks, or pick? Thats just not happening unless you're trading with Al Davis.

i think people are thinking that we trade a pick and gholston to someone for a few picks. like say our 1st and gholston for a stockpile of later picks. expecting any type of compensation for just gholston is dumb. he makes a ton of money and sucks.

OP: my "trade gholston for picks" jab was just that, a jab.

but, several on here have said this may be a good moment in jet history to cut our loses on a huge contract. so, even getting a 6th for him is gravy.
