Yup this is the thread were all the haters get out their knee pads. As good as our running backs were, Benson was clearly the best back on the field and an absolute beast. The Bengals ran the ball every bit as good as the Jets did. Their No. 1 WR was taken out by Revis, ours was taken out by his hands. The difference in that game was our Offensive scheme coupled with execution and play calling. We ran two plays out of running formations that broke the Bengals down totally and created huge plays. The Bengals passed out of drop back formation and never got the big down field game changing plays out of their passing game. The other major change was last week we ran almost exclusively to the right and the Bengals adjusted. We gashed them to the left with Greene all day. We put our QB in passing situations out of running formations and rolled him out in space. The Bengals dropped Palmer straight back almost every time. Schottenheimer who has gotten killed around here was the big difference in yesterday?s game. We had a plan and a scheme which worked to perfection. We took chances down the field but they were set up to succeed. He communicated his plan to the players who executed to perfection. That is great coaching. Hats off to a guy who has taken way to much abuse. We all saw back in 06 what this guy brought to the table. Breese and Rivers certainly haven?t been hurt by being around him early in their careers. Sanchez at times has looked like a deer caught in the headlights but he?s a rookie in a league that looks at tape every week and adjusts. Maybe Tannenbaum and the rest of the league knows what they are talking about when the praise this guy.
Good and necessary post. Outstanding execution on perfectly timed misdirection plays was a huge factor.
He did a good job dummying down the plan. The question still remains how he can do when an all out high octane offense is required.
We ran some unbelivable misdirection plays yesterday and every one of them had a different look and everyone of them worked. That is not dumbing down that's analysis of the oppositions tendencies coupled with knowledge of the skill sets you have.
With the amount of negative threads devoted to Schotty Jr after every game I was absolutely shocked their wasn't a positive one after yesterdays game. Schotty deserves all the credit in the world for that gameplan yesterday. He called a great game and the game plan was brilliant. What I loved about the CS yesterday is that they had no problem giving Greene the ball over T Jones when it was clear that we were a better offense with Greene on the field rather than Jones. Kinda similar to 2004 when Jordan was the backup to Curtis and was the more explosive RB yet Herm almost punched out the RB coach for putting him in the game. This is the kind of offense we can have when we have a QB that can execute the gameplan. Shame on all of you for clamoring for a Paul Hackett offense.
I'm just saying that yes, we changed to Greene yesterday and it's a good thing we did because Jones was useless. Whether it is Indy or San Diego they will look at the film and prepare for either next week. Both of those teams can score a lot of points and Revis can only cover one of their receivers. At some point we may need to score a lot of points and in the past when we fell behind Schottenheimer's answer was to run Jones up the middle 5 or 6 times in a row.
The Bengals allowed less than 20 points a game. Here are the teams that scored 24 or more against them. Green Bay, Houston, MN, SD and the NY Jets twice. Here's the list of teams that scored more than 30 against them. MN and the NY Jets. The Colts and the Chargers have better personal on O and both of them have experienced QB's who are among the best in the league. Manning is in the argument for best ever. If you're actually going to bash Shottenheimer because the Jets might not be able to score with those teams that have better offensive personal and two of the most experienced and best passers in the league, I'm going to suggest that you can't be satisfied.
I don't hate Schotty but I was highly critical of his playcalling earlier in the year when Sanchez was put in situations that he wasn't likely to succeed in. Yesterday Schotty called a masterful game that kept the gals on their heels. The offense looked very good. If Edwards could catch the deep ball things would even look better.
totally agree - Schotty called an outstanding game! Play action to the right with the OL pulling in that direction and having Sanchez role out to the left to find a wide-open Keller, Greene's runs to the left, the quick slants to J-Co we've been looking for, it was all called (and executed) perfectly!
Not at all, I am saying that if we fall behind we will need some big downfield plays. In the last few weeks Sanchez seems to have proven he can throw the ball plenty good enough. The problem is Edwards can't catch it. He will need plays that have Cotchery downfield instead. If he does that then I will jump on Schottenheimer's bandwagon too.
Yep Shotty's game plan out coached the Bungle OC plan totally & was the main reason we won the game. To bad we do not have a edge PR as Carson was a sitting duck back there if we had had one we may have set a record for most sacks in a game or PO game
I have been critical of shotty and for good reason. However, his play calling in the last few games has improved significantly. He is giving MS high % passes finally. I had been calling for quick slants, outs, and designed screens. I would still like to see more along the lines of designed screens, a little more throwing on first down and a few more random deep balls to keep the defense honest. But other than that he called a very good game. The misdirection was a nice element.
I wonder when they gave BE a exam when we traded for him did they also give him a eye exam? May be he needs a pair of contact lenses to correct his vision?
I'm not here to bash Schotty. He called a good game. Sanchez on the other hand had a great game. His passes were very well thrown. The location on his passes was amazing. They were all in stride at an appropriate speed where his receiver had the best shot of getting the ball. With a QB passing like Sanchez did, Schotty's gameplan was perfect. It also helped, as Sanchez said in his press conference, that the line was providing him with tie to throw. Again though, to Schotty's credit, Sanchez was either given a quick throw or movement to let a pass develop. Those parts of the call were certainly on Schotty. The only apparent hole in the offense last night was on the receiving end.
I agree 100%. Schotty did put Sanchez in a place where he was not ready to be. The last two games have had excellent playcalling. Kudos to Schotty for that. One has to wonder how much Rex's involvement has changed Schotty's calls.
Schotty has been good lately. I've always said that he was most frustrating because he has shown the potential to call great games at times, but didn't seem to do it consistently. Hopefully he can continue the recent trend.
Yup, I agree... it took some time to adjust to the team (and it's strengths) but now that he has he's calling good games. Good for us and good for him. I think he'll be a serious candidate for the Bills HC job (that's also because nobody wants to coach there!)... but I wouldn't mind him staying next year and proving what he's worth with his system finally in place.
Schotty has improved greatly over the course of the season, but it took him far too long to realize just how great this rush attack was. If we'd been running the ball 50 times a game from week 1, we wouldn't have lost in New Orleans or against Buffalo.
