The Jets got better against the run after losing NT Kris Jenkins for the season in Week 7. This doesn't mean Jenkins' impact was negligible, but fill-in Sione Pouha has established himself as more than just a backup-caliber nose man. With Jenkins in the lineup, the Jets allowed 115.7 rushing yards per game. With Pouha in, the gave up just 98.6 and finished No. 8 overall in run defense. Losing Jenkins forced the Jets to get a lot more creative with their personnel and packages on the DL which probably led to some more confusing looks for opponents. Hopefully they stick with that next season when Jenkins comes back.
Safe to say We all liked Pouha and Devito because they are good Motor players. One thing is they may not get Doubled as often but they are quicker to run down the line. I'm sure Jenx helped these guys out on how to play that position also. If there is one guy to learn it from, it's Big Jenx...
makes me drewel all over myself thinking about our defense next season with jenks back and a pass rushing OLB we'll get in a trade with gholston!
It's really encouraging to know that this team has some depth along the defensive line. Now that our pick is later in the first it might be hard to trade back to recoup the lost 3rd and 4th rounders but I'm still in favor of this being a draft where Tanny trades down in the first, takes the best available lineman on either side of the ball or a slot receiver and goes from there. Of course it'll be awfully hard for Tanny to trade down in the first if the Jets pick 32nd :].
? What exactly do you think we'd get for the Ghost? Cause the appropriate answer is "nothing." NVM a pass rushing specialist.
I can only imagine how dominant this D would be with Jenkins and Pouha out there together--I still think Pouha could be a solid DE in the 3-4 scheme, and DeVito is a good rotational guy--but also a solid NT, as we've seen, meaning we can fix other holes first in the draft (edge rusher, safety, CB #2, OL)
Pouha sticks to his role and stuffs the run. He offers very little in terms of pass rush, but that's not his game. He's a backup NT, and he's been very valuable this season.
I think we all were thinking a nose tackle would be drafted this year after Jenkins got hurt, but because Pouha's played so well I doubt this will be the case. It's great when guys like this really step up when the team needs them.
In all fairness to Sione Pouha, the stats are a little misleading. Jenkins played against Chris Johnson and the entire team got bitched by the Miami Wildcat. Whereas the last four games of the season, we played teams without the resources to run the football. Tampa Bay is clearly stagnant on offense; Falcons had injuries to the offensive line and were playing without Turner; Colts phoned it in with Donald Brown; Bengals didn't have Cedric Benson.
You can never have enough good guys on the nose in the defense. Pouha did step up, but he's also 30. He came out as a 26 yr old rookie cause of his religion. Some more depth would definitely be welcome.
It always would, but I wouldn't invest a first round pick in a NT since the defense has done more than held its ground since Jenkins has been gone. And next year Jenkins will be back and healthy hopefully. However, I'd definitely consider a first round pick being used on a 3-4 DE since Ellis and Douglas are both in their 30's...
I agree! DT is a position you can find further down. I don't wanna get too much off topic, but I'd love a DE in the 1st.
This site has Pouha ranked as the #1 run stuffing defensive tackel in the league: http://www.profootballfocus.com/by_...e=r&runpass=&teamid=-1&numsnaps=25&numgames=1
