Did anyone listen to any of the assistant coaches press conferences today??? In Particular, I thought Schotty's was very interesting. He talked a lot about WHY he wanted to stay and about the camaraderie in the locker room. The stuff I found most interesting was the stuff he said about the team needing to able to take advantage of 8-9 man fronts in the passing game (something I totally agree with) and Braylon Edwards being really happy with the team (and being a great blocker). For all of you overzealous Schotty haters, the guy obviously isn't going anywhere. Rex and him obviously really get along and he seems anxious to build a strong foundation with Sanchez and the rest of the offense. I seriously recommend you get over the silly/illogical Shcotty hate.
The only thing I can say is that I hope Rex clamping down on Schotty opened Schotty's eyes. The last 2 games have had damn good playcalling; I could live with that sort of gameplan as Sanchez develops. I'm interested to see how he calls the game this weekend.
Since the second New England game, the play calling has been much better. Lots of safe throws/reads for Sanchez and a lot of running. Since then, he's only had one real disastrous game and we've been winning
Especially in the last two games the slants, short outs, curls, bubble screens, button hooks, drags, etc. have really been developing well and building his confidence. Only after those have been established has he looked more comfortable in the intermediate to deep passing game. The problem earlier in the year was that it was 15 yards downfield or a run. That's not how you should go about it ever, let alone with a rookie quarterback. And remember, this isn't Madden. Schotty doesn't just call plays, he designs them. The play design, as much if not moreso than the play calling, was at fault. Now, he seems to be learning and adjusting to Sanchez as much as Sanchez is learning and adjusting to his offense.
Talking about a straight shooter--Mike Westhoff. I'd never heard him speak to the press before. I was very impressed.
The one thing I have to say about BS is that he has not called the last couple of games like he normally does, maybe it has to do with Rex asking him to rely on the run more or maybe he finally understands that he does not have to ask his QB to carry the team, whatever the case maybe if he is going to call the game to the strength of the personnel's skill and not just forcing a scheme because that is what he runs, then I will give him the benefit of the doubt. However do not be so quick to get selective Amnesia, as we have had 3 plus years of this guy and double reverses in the frozen rain and an offense that has been nothing but mediocre at best. Our dislike of him is not personal as you know, it is based on his lack of consistent playcalling and a ton of trickery and movement to throw 7 yard pass or a check down pass that does not get a first down. You can keep your pom-poms and cheer for him all you want, personally if he left it would not bother me one bit.
That's really the beef I had with Schottenheimer this year. I was actually high on him early in the year and gave him props after Week 1. But he got too aggressive with the play calls after we acquired Braylon Edwards and it took him (and Rex to an extent) too long to realize that just wasn't our game. Since they've gone back to the safe, high percentage plays we're 5-1.
Better late than never. Going into next season, having continuity throughout the whole team will be critical to our success next year. The most important aspect will be how far Sanchez comes along. I think Schotty and Rex are on the same page and it seems to be paying dividends. Rex seems to have a way with making the best of what hes got, so if can tweak Schotty's habits a bit to fall in line with his program, Im all for it. If these guys are all developing a tight bond, I would not mess with that either....that could really set us back. Who would of thought that in the first year here Rex would give us a No 1 rated defense, with mostly holdovers from last year AND losing Kris 1/2 way thru the season? I never would have believed it... so if he thinks Schotty is going to work out here, I'm willing to wait-n-see.
just watched the presser, found it interesting that he said they've called a few pass plays out of the wildcat/option with Brad Smith, but Smith has held onto the ball in them because he had running lanes also, this. "For the first time in a real long time I'm really happy. I love it here, I love working with Coach Ryan, I hope I'm here for a long time ... I love working with Rex, I'm excited about the things we're doing offensively." Tell me that doesn't say something about working with Rex as opposed to Mangini
The best game Schotty has ever called was last year's game against Tennessee. Why he doesn't call more games like that is beyond me. He did it earlier in the season, then went away from the short passing game entirely until Rex fucked him up with some truth
I don't buy this PR bullshit at all. Brian Schottenheimer has an opportunity to coach the Buffalo Bills next season, maybe the Oakland Raiders. That's it. He's not going to compete with the cream of the crop for a good team. If I was looking for a head coach, I'd hire Mike Shanahan or John Fox or Bill Cowher or even Eric Mangini a hell of a lot sooner than I'd hire Marty's boy. Staying with the New York Jets is the smartest career move BS can make at this point.
The dislike for Schotty by many of us is deserved. Of course he isn't going anywhere, unless he wants to opt to be picked up by some dysfunctional football team where he can have a good chance of flaming out and getting tossed as a HC. With the direction this team is going it is in his best interest to sit tight for another couple of years. The more developed and successful this team becomes, the better chance he has of getting picked up by a better team as a HC down the road. At least that is how I see it.
Schotty truly did not have a stick out year for an HC job and his thinking is probably 2nd year Sanchez might provide that. Its a business and he is playing this perfectly. He already has the number 1 rushing team...which will allow him to do more next year. Cant blame him. This years run might be a tough one...next year he will stand out and have his options. Thats my guess. Still..he says all the right things and you have to give him credit for that.
I've been of the opinion that Schott is neither great nor awful, but the simple fact is, as the foregoing likely shows, he's not going anywhere, and probably shouldn't unless the Jets could improve themselves at OC.
If he does stick around which seems very likely I want to see him let Mark air it out. The cuffs this season are understandable but at some point they have to come off. If we were always going to be this rush/defense only team we should not have wasted a draft pick on Mark. Anyone can hand the ball off. I really want to see Mark throw a lot next year, there is nothing better then experience.
I seriously recommend that you get over your blind loyalty that goes beyond objectivity. I see a lot of stuff I like with what Schotty does, and he has cut down on the low-percentage trick plays that he had kept in his gameplans for a long time without effectiveness. But he, like any other member of the Jets organization that is responsible for putting the team in position to win, is not beyond criticism. If the Jets feel like he is the one they truly want mentoring Sanchez, then so be it. But he will also be most directly responsible if the development of Sanchez is stunted by bad play design and bad play flow and lack of preparation for key plays. It's pretty easy to call it 'Schotty hate' when you are either unwilling or unfit to understand the arguments made against his coaching.
I can assure you that I am both 'willing and fit' to understand arguments made against his coaching/play-calling. I just happen to find said arguments both irrational and bereft of substance. What generally happens on this board is, if a reverse to clowney goes for 30 yards and a first down, everyone gets pumped up in the game thread and nobody brings up the play-call. If it fails miserably, it was schotty's fault because it was a "cutesy" play-call that wasn't taking advantage of our strong running game. As always, people make their arguments based on the RESULTS of the play, not on any real merits of the play-calling.
