I know the Jets have just given out their team awards and congrats to all the players who received them. But where would the Jets be right now without the solid play of Brad Smith over the last quarter of the season? He has performed incredibly no matter where he has been put and what makes this even more incredible is that he was a QB in college. I'd like to recognize Brad Smith as the "Perform Wherever You Put Me" player for 2009. I know he will never know this nor does this make a difference to anyone but at least he can be recognized somewhere!! Edit: Has a converted QB ever returned a kick for a TD in NFL history? If we get enough people to agree in this thread I am e-mailing it to the NYJ because he really deserves some sort of recognition
There's this dude named Josh Cribbs, he's pretty good... Props to Brad Smith, he's had a great year. Still think he would have been the difference in that second Miami game (he was inactive).
I admit to being sort of down on keeping Smith prior to this season, but I've definitely been proven wrong at this point. He's been impressive for most of the season and the kick return the other day was the topper - incredible. Props to B. Smith indeed.
i never understood the hate on this guy. his special teams play alone makes him a valuable player for us. it isn't like he is a failed 1st round pick who only shows up on special teams. he is a mid round pick who may never be very good wr but he does so many things for the team that it would be silly to let him go somewhere else. if we had cut him he would have been in new england within hours.
Smith clearly has stepped up his game big time. Do I think he can be a slot receiver for us, or more to the point the 3rd receiver we need? I doubt it, but can he be useful to this squad as an elite ST player, and also capable of getting the job done on offense when he is called upon? Hell yes.
The hate comes from the fact that we tried to turn him into a wr, which he isn't. He's a great special teams player and he can run the wildcat pretty effectively.
I think Randel-El of the Steelers/Redskins played QB in college, too. Every goog team needs players like Smith who wear multiple hats, can be a distraction at the very least when on the field and that are winners at their core. Love this kid (I also like Wallace Wright -- steady player who puts team above all else).
our special teams is NOTHING without him.....hell, he wasn't playing when the Jets gave up the return TD's to Ted Ginn. Just goes to show you what an important piece of the puzzle he really is. And now Smith is proving his worth in the offense. The guy is pretty versatile...no wonder Mangini had a stiff hard-on for this guy. I never wanted to cut this guy.....he's intregral to this team.
Absolutely hilarious how underrated he is by our fanbase. I sound like a broken record, because I am constantly singing praises of his versatility -- yet always getting shot down by someone who considers his football knowledge vastly superior to mine (which, I concede, is probably true). Anyways, even in our darkest days (2007 second game vs the Pats) Smith was there to be one of our beacons of hope. Those option plays were the only solution we had to a New England behemoth, and Brad Smith was there actually gaining yards. His "WC" formation was also underrated in 2008, where I can remember a couple of times we used it successfully. He's also filled in as a Gunner a couple of times for Wallace Wright and made some devastating tackles He's sealed a couple of blocks for KR LWash tds. He's taken one back himself. Underrated player and great Jet. Brad Smith is the fucking man!
He's great and very versatile. The only get thing that came out of Leon being hurt was the need to use Smith more. He's ripped off some big gains taking the snap, should be great next year with Leon and Brad out there for those plays.
