Did the Jets ever get into the playoffs because a team (like today) didnt play its starters? Did the Jets ever get knocked out of being in the playoffs b/c some other team was already in the playoffs and didnt play 100%?
It wasn't nearly as close as the score indicated, and had Manning stayed in the Jets wouldn't have had a snowball's chance in hell of winning. But, as you said, a win is a win. I'm certainly not complaining about Caldwell's decision.
My question was: whether it ever happened before to the jets either way -- they got in or were kept out?
Not really a laydown since Herm wanted that week 17 win but that OT loss vs STL in 2004 which was leading into a whirl of downfall heading into the postseason ended up costing the Saints the playoffs..... And also pushed the 8-8 Rams going to the 2nd round too where I think they lost to Vick and the Falcons.
Not quite the same thing, but the Jets were on the lucky side of a team losing against another teams backups with the playoffs on the line. I believe it was 2004. The Bills were home and hosting the Steelers who were resting a rookie Big Ben and their starters as they were 14-1 going into Week 17. The Bills needed the win to make the playoffs. The Steeler backups won, the Bills were eliminated and the Jets were a wild card.
who cares....jets win and play one game for the playoffs on national television to close out giants stadium
No we actually needed to win that game, until we got lucky with some other team losing just before we went down in OT. It might have been the Bills in that aformentioned game with the Steelers.
Yeah I forgot the Bills shit the bed to St Pierre. I think they lost though by the time OT arrived and I think Herm heard the news but still wanted the win. Didnt get it as Bulger drove the Rams and it cost the Saints who were viewing the game after their win(Which I think was a week after Carney choked away a miracle return vs JAX)
You still have to win, like someone mentioned Buf couldn't do it in 2004. Teams like Miami, Jax, Den and others have no excuses. They all had chances to win enough games and couldn't do it. regardless who plays next week we still have to beat Cincy. Isn't it about time we got some luck on our side as Jet fans?
I was just trying to think -- if the jets ever got knocked out b/c someone rolled over. Youd think of all the bad luck it would have happened once -- but i could not recall any.
In 1993 the Oilers had nothing to play for on a Sunday night at the Astrodome and the Jets were all set up for a win-and-in by virtue of the afternoon's results. We were never in it, lost something like 38-0, I don't even remember if Houston used their starters or not--they were on an 11-game winning streak and on cruise control. Highlight of the game for the Jets was a strip-sack by Jeff Lageman before the half, causing Oilers DC Buddy Ryan to throw his infamous punch at OC Kevin Gilbride. Bruce Coslet was fired a day or so later, the Jets had been 8-5 and finished 8-8, it was also Blair Thomas' last game as a Jet.
I forgot about that one yesterday morning(maybe I was blocking it out). They played Cody carlson in place of Moon, everything broke our way that afternoon(I think all we needed was NE to beat Miami) and we were all set to make the playoffs w/ a win that Sunday Night. We all know we have a million bad losses in jet history but this might be the worst regular season loss in jet history- it's at least top 5.
Yep during the Bruce Coslet era (you remember him right) we went to Houston who was already in the POs & got TOTALLY waxed by the Oilers & Coslet lost his job the next day & the Petey era started
Everyone acts like the Jets would have definitely lost if Manning didn't come out. That's not necessarily true.
No certainly not but more then likely we would have had based on how Manning was picking us apart until he departed
He was doing very well, but I wouldn't say tearing apart. He was on pace for a less than 300 yard game and had 0 passing TDs to that point.
I agree. I'm getting a little tired of everyone talking as if the Colts just threw in the towel and gave us the game. When Manning came out after the better part of 3 qtrs the D had held him to 15 pts - not bad imo. They decided to pull some starters and our team continued to play hard and took the win. End of story. The SOJ's would have made Painter look like Manning and knocked themselves out of playoff contention. I liked the fact that they followed through and went for the kill when the opportunity presented itself - nothing wrong with that.
