    Let's see:

    #1 ranked defense in NFL

    #1 Rushing attack in NFL

The rule has ALWAYS been: Defense and a strong rushing attack win games (and championships). The Jets lead the league in BOTH categories and they aren't even gonna make the "tournament." I have to believe this is unprecendented in NFL history.

Heck, I'm willing to be 98% of teams in NFL history that have lead the league in JUST ONE of the two categories above have made the playoffs.

I mean really think about this. #1 in BOTH categories and a .500 record! Only the Jets lol...

how many teams have done both of those things with a rookie qb and not made the playoffs? not as unprecedented now.

When the offense is completely dysfunctional? Yes.

I don't understand why Schottenheimer is still calling plays. His damn offenses shut themselves down all the time. I don't think I've ever seen a team that shut itself down on offense periodically the way the Jets have over the last 4 years. It's freaking pitiful. It doesn't matter who the Jets are playing. They can shut themselves down against just about anybody.

We also have a negative turnover differential. Not turning the ball over is also part of the rule.

Hummm.... The 2000 Ravens had a lousy "O" and still figured out a way to make the playoffs and win Supe XXV with their #1 ranked "O" and a Jamal Lewis rushing attacked that must have been in the top 3...

close to it goose - i have been preaching around here that having the #1 defense in pts allowed does not tell the whole story. u have to look at other stats (3rd down sacks, penalties, turnovers) for a better prediction of overall team performance.

the #1 rushing attack is also a skewed stat. our passing game downright sucks - if you take out the big plays this year, the passing game between 10-20 yards is pitiful.

not a very good combination for a winning record.

but with a rookie QB and coach, they have a buffer so we'll see

Which in turn means the offense is to blame

Doesn't matter, point is we have the #1 ranked D and #1 ranked rushing attack. Our record should be BETTER but because of a rookie QB and the imbecile of a OC we aren't

This league has become a passing league, we are in the process of building what could potentially be a very good passing team as well.

This D is good, that D was all time great. We are nowhere on the same level as the 2000 Ravens, not even close.

maybe the wording sucks but basically when you have your rookie qb throwing 20 ints and fumbling all over the place having the number one defense and number one rushing offense isn't an automatic ticket to the playoffs.

my question was how many teams have started a rookie qb had the number one rush offense and number one defense and still didn't make the playoffs. it was just my annoyed response to seeing this question asked at least once a week on this site.

oh u are mistaken - it matters big time - and having the rookie QB and head coach compounds the negative story those stats are telling u.

This shows why you can't just look at stats. First, the defense. Yes, the defense may be #1 in yards against, but this defense gave up 3 game losing TD drives in the final minute of the game this year. A big time defense doesn't do that. The problem remains the lack of a pass rush.

As for the running game, that stat is skewed also. The Jets run the ball far more than every team in the league and lead the league by a huge margin in first down runs. How do you expect a rookie QB to take advantage of the running game when the OC doesn't ever let him throw on 1st down.

The 3rd "rule" is to have a + TO margin. If we had that, we would be in the playoffs. Oh and Ted Ginn.

When you lose to the Miami Dolphins twice, the Buffalo Bills at home, and the Atlanta Falcons at home without their top RB (for all but one play), and the Jacksonville Jaguars at home, then you deserve to miss the playoffs.

The Jets lost all of those games by 4, 3, 5, 2, 3.

If you take all of the home games, the Jets should be 11-3. Good for being tied for #2 in the AFC. Oh what could have been.

Yeah well, there is a reason we run it on first down, so we can establish the run, if the run game falls on it's face early like today then Sanchez has no run game to take advantage of and the result is what you saw today, as well as Schotty not commiting to anything which sucked.

Take even two out of five of those, we're sitting number 5 seed.

The Jets also had 7 Pro Bowlers last year and no playoffs. When do you see that happen?
