Put me down for let Callahan call the plays while Schotty spends all his time with Sanchez and Clemens, undoing the damage he's done to them by running an offense that even Chad Pennington had trouble executing properly (Captain Checkdown? That started in 2006...) BTW, that scared tentative look we saw out of Sanchez in the first half on several drives on Sunday? I've seen that before, from Kellen Clemens after Schotty opened up the play book some during his second opportunity after Chad finally flunked out of the "genius" offense.
I think Schotty can be a good OC in the future but needs more experience. At times he overthinks himself, and other times it seems he is not thinking at all. He passes when he should be running. In obvious pass situations he only sends two receivers so as not to confuse the qb. Schotty needs to learn to trust in his players to make plays in big moments. We don't need gimicks to win, coaches have to understand that their players will make the plays, not genius play calling. I gotta agree with the post, promote Callahan.
This isn't just about 2009 with Schotty. He's been consistently inconsistent and it's been well documented on this board. If by the end of 4 years as an OC he's still pulling the same bullshit, it doesn't seem like he'll ever learn. Maybe Rex can help him.
not a big fan of shotty but evojoe is right. the main thing sanchez needs early in his career is consistency (see the opposite with alex smith). it will stunt sanchezs growth as an nfl qb if they switch systems on him anytime in the near future rex just needs to make executive decisions and veto when shotty goes into mad scientist mode
I would fire Schotty, he is more of a liability than a help. How many times do we cringe, hoping that he's not going to lose the game for us. He has questionable tactics, like last year when he had Favre throwing so much when he knew his arm was injured. This year he was setting up schemes for Sanchez like he was a veteran passer, when he knew the team was set up for a ground and pound approach. He's not horrible, but he's definitely not great. And there are a LOT of coordinators out there available. Heck, there's even going to be a lot of Head Coaches from this year that will be looking for a job as an OC next year. There's a lot of talent out there. Now here's a big question... do you think Eric Mangini would be a better OC for the Jets under Rex Ryan than Schotty?
The offensive system is fine and the play calling has been okay. There are some "WTFs" during a Jets game on offense, but you can't blame Schotty for a rookie QBs mistakes. I think Schotty can be a good coach, he just needs some consistency in the offense (mostly at the QB position). He had Noodlearm, Gunslinger, and Sanchez the last three years, three COMPLETELY different quarterbacks.
: He went from ball boy to editing game film, to assistant coach of who the heck knows what and became our coach, no I don't think he will be a good OC for us, I personally don't want to see him ever in Jet green.
i put no rex just needs to take over but it was a very difficult decision between that and being fond of beer.
While I voted No, the real question is whether the Jets could do better with someone who might be available. You can't just fire someone - you need to replace him, too. Maybe some others here have an idea about who might be available, but I would be skeptical about someone without prior OC experience, and most who have prior experience are either HC's, still with teams, or currently out of the league. Another factor at least mentioned once before, and with which I concur, is that firing BC would mean Sanchez would have another and new OC to deal with. I don't think that's such a great idea unless we know it would be a definite upgrade.
the good news is the the QB coach Matt Cavanaugh and Bill Callahan could step in and coach the offense without changing the language. Both have been OCs at one point - Matt with the Ravens in 2000 winning a ring and Callahan making Rich Gannon a MVP and leading the Raiders to the SB the following year. Schotty is the least qualified offensive mind amongst the three and yet he calls the shots. Bad news for the Jets.
Because his replacement might already be on the Roster and the replacement might fit more into what Ryan would like to do, yes I can see it happening.
If they toss Schotty, I hope they promote Callahan. He would be the best fit for this team, and we wont lose a year to a new system. Remember, he was one of the first coaches to sign on to staying with Rex... that tells me alot.
i voted no.but for rex to be more hands-on with him.my biggest complaint is his feel for the game.to me the worst call sunday was the flea flicker.if he woulda waited another possession or 2 it might have paid off.but you do it early before the run has been established there's no reason for the db's to bite on it.it seems like the gadget plays are brought out at the worst possible time.but if he could get away from those and mix in more play-acion i'd have no prob's with him btw anyone calling for callahan, wasn't he the o.c. for the raiders when gannon was spraying it over the yard at a clip of 50-55 att per game? that's not rexy's ground and pound
