WOuld you fire Schotty or not?

?

Would you fire Schotty at the end of the season?

  1. NO. I love our offense the way it is. Sanchez and the O just need to step up their game

    19.0%
  2. NO. He's a good OC but Ryan has to take over the play-calling when Schotty is outsmarting himself.

    22.4%
  3. YES. Schotty is an ok OC but he just doesn't fit this teams mentality/offensive talent

    18.4%
  4. YES. Schotty sucks and the years he's been OC are proof.

    15.6%
  5. I'm rather fond of beer

    16.3%
  6. If Schotty was fond of beer he'd be a better OC.

    8.2%

Let's say the team finishes 8-8/9-7 so ok season but no playoffs, if you are Rex Ryan how do you handle the OC situation?

Personally I'd replace Schottenheimer with a coordinator whose mentality is more similar to Rex's (I might have left an unnoticeable suggestion in my sig). As an article posted here on TGG explained, no matter how you put it Schotty is a finesse guy and that just isn't the mentality this team is molded after.
I'm not saying he is a bad OC let's be clear, in fact his schemes worked pretty well on some occasions and sometimes he did actually outsmart the opponent,
but all in all I think for this team it's more important to have a guy who is more consistent and doesn't end up outsmarting his own team too and not only the opponent.
With a defense like ours you can accept to have an offense that doesnt make 30 points per game but what you can't accept is to be inconsistent and give away games like Schotty's offenses have done (now and in the past).

I don't think this discussion should be based on the last game only but on what Schotty has proved all these years with his play-calling and scheme designing styles.

PS I think however that with the excuse of having a rookie QB he is going to be kept around for one more year unless somebody hires him as a HC (Hey, if Mangini is a HC everyone can)!

If I'm Rex Ryan I have Schotty under a microscope for the last 8 games of the season. I'm looking for him to consistently attack the other teams weakness and to commit to the ground and pound attack so long as the situation allows for it.

Rex needs to take some responsibility too and make sure Schotty doesn't get too far off into Schotty out think myself land during games.

Agreed.....as far as i'm concerned, the rest of the season should be used as a job interview for Schotty. If we finish with a .500 record or worse.....it's time to go in a different direction..with Rex having more imput on the offense.

I'm tired of mediochrity and losing games the team should've won.

I was operating under the assumption Schotty continues to be inconsitent as he has been in these years.

if that's the case....show him the door.

    Consistent mediochrity is bullshit.

If we see the same inconsistencies and nothing changes it's time to promote Callahan and ship Schotty to the unemployment line. I believe he's done pretty well since the Buffalo game, but we've seen him have good/great games before and it's only been two games.

If he can keep up with what was a mostly good second half against Miami he deserves to stay.

He hasn't had a lot of consistency to work with, different QB's, RB's, and HC's, and whatever other acronym you throw in.

I can see Mark and Schotty developing a chemistry if given the chance. Out stable of receivers needs to stay healthy and Schotty needs to put more trust in Mark at this point.

I fail to see how Schotty is a huge reason why we are 4-4?? Why are we turing this guy into a scapegoat?

The two Miami losses were due to the D getting ripped by the Wildcat and the other was ST. And in my mind Sanchez blew the other two games. In the Buffalo and Saints games Sanchez was responsible for 8 total turnovers I believe...how the hell is that Schottys fault? We cant run the ball every down...the kid has to make some plays.

If you are an OC with a rookie QB you have to understand you can't let him do the same adjustments/plays you'd ask Favre to do. Schotty doesn't get this IMO, he sticks to his conception of offense and if you fit good, if you don't f* you.
As I said in the post Schotty does call some good plays, but in EVERY single game he finds a way to call a fucked up play/drive that has no sense and that puts the game at risk. I'm not saying he always has to be right but it can't happen in EVERY game (minus the Houston and Raiders one). You have to be more consistent with the play-calling IMO.

PS look at Abzymul's analysis on the O playcalling... they are great!

I stand somewhere between the two "no" options. I'm certainly not in love with the way Schottenheimer's done his job but I think that he's done solidly enough considering that he's spent all year with a very inexperienced rookie QB and only one receiver.

There are a lot of really valid criticisms of the job he's done, and there is also a lot of scapegoating bullshit (ripping him for being aggressive against the Bills, then ripping him for being conservative against the Dolphins, when in fact he had similar game plans in both games for example.)

I don't think that firing him would really accomplish much of anything aside from making Sanchez learn a second offense in 2 years.

    Inconsistencies:

2006 - Chad to playoffs - new system implementation
2007 - Chad vs Kellen - whet else can you say
2008 - Favre - new guy, new system, self serving bastard
    2009 - Rookie QB

Although I think Schotty is a good OC and not a great OC, he's had some inconsistencies with the members of the Offense, namely the QB (which by the way is the most important position on offense - not to mention the team). You can't blame all of Schotty's shortcomings on his play calling when his personnel package has changed almost yearly.

I think we as a fan base should not be casting off Schotty just yet. He deserves at least one more year to develop the new QB and get him up to speed. If Sanchez has the mental tools to go along with his physical tools then he should be able to pick up Brian's offense pretty well with a second OTA, spring training, and season.

If we see the same inconsistencies next season, then I'll be on the "Fire Schotty" BW as well...

There are those that would defend Schotty to the death. I am not one of those people. I had a feeling keeping Schotty around after he got turned down for the HC job was a mistake. Schotty views himself as a spurned HC candidate and remaining merely a OC has to stick in his craw just a lil bit. I think Ryan has given Schotts carte blanche with the offense and at this point, needs to reign him in a bit. Ryan's mistake may have been begging Schotts to stay on as OC.

I'd hate to think that all of his machinations this year with Sanchez and the offense is some effort to show that he really is some kind of genius.

Its almost always a tale of two games this season. 1st half game plan tossed by 3rd qtr. We've only seen it once during the Raider game go an entire game. While I'm not knocking making adjustments at halftime, its the type of adjustments that leaves me confounded. Especially at the end of games. As in chess, you have to have a endgame prepared and Schotts fails miserably at that. In addition, his first half game plans always seem to attack a team's strength instead of its weakness. If a team has a great pass defense, Schotts wants to air it out. If they have a great run D, Schotts goes up the gut repeatedly with Jones and now Greene. If that's genius, I'll take dumbass for a dollar.

Yeah, call it a job interview but it would be wise for Ryan to make it an outgoing one no matter what happens this season. Schotts is beyond being simply a coordinator and needs to run his own show. I'm not sure he can be anything else besides HC/OC now..

i really don't care. i think we will see a nice jump in the production of the offense next year just because of sanchez' development. if they are gonna fire schotty and hire callahan or the qb coach it won't effect sanchez by having to learn a new system so i guess it just comes down to if rex thinks schotty can be trusted.

    No.
A new offensive scheme will just set this offense back especially with a rookie QB having to learn a new system.
Stay the course. Patience is a vertue.

Bottom line is this, the board overreacts to every game. It goes both ways, if the offense has a good game people start worrying about Schotty leaving for a head coaching job, if the offense sucks the same people want to fire him.

Just remember Sanchez is a rookie, plus he left school early. I love the kid and think he has tremendous upside, but he's still a rookie who hasn't played a game yet with all his receivers healthy.

Another thing that irritated me this week was seeing threads on how Greene isn't that good. Same thing, he's a rookie. He showed 2 weeks ago he can be a good back in this league, but you're going to see some inconsistency with him as well. Be patient with these guys.

The guys I'm legit worried about are guys like Faneca, our linebackers, and Kerry Rhodes. These guys should be stepping their game up and simply are not. Let's bad mouth them before we over analyze the rookies. We had a great draft and it'll show clearer next season rather than this one.

It always amusing to me how Schotty starts getting killed for play calls on here when ever we dont convert a 3rd down. If you post in the game threads you'll see this is a weekly occurence. Take last week...when we ran for a 1st down on 3rd and 10 everyone was going nuts how great the play was and how off guard the Dolfags were. However, if that play only got a gain of 3 everyone would have killed him saying it was a horrible call and he has no balls etc.

In addition...we all love when Sanchez starts to sling the ball all over the field and score TD's but whenever he throws multiple picks it Schottys fault for letting him throw. I dont get it...

The only way this kid is going to learn is by making mistakes. Thats true in any job you have. I'm not suggesting feeding him to the lions but he cant be coddled.

After speaking reasonably for a moment let me just say that I was super pissed at that 2nd and 6 pass play down in the red zone at the end of the game last week. Thats when I feel he out smarts himself and tries to be cute. Especially when the Dolfags were playing pass.

Lack of patience is one of the biggest problems with this franchise and its fan base IMO. Shit...how many head coaches have we had in the past 20 years?!?!

Look at Pitts....how long did they stick with Cowher...it finally paid off. We need to commit long term to a coach and a system...this new system, new players bullshit every 3-5 years needs to stop.

Schotty isn't the problem at this point. You can see Rex has him going to ground more and when he has called plays, they've been good.

The problem is there has to come a point in the Game (2nd and 6 at the GL in 4 down territory...perhaps) where Rex needs to step in and be the H.C.

That will happen. Rex appears to be self-aware.

As Rex Learns, and Sanchez learns we'll stop finding creative ways to lose games.... this team is already built for success..We've won 7 of 8 games.

We happened to give 3 of them away.

That will change...this isn't Dick Jauron we are talking aobut.,
