Ok, Ryan has on a few occasions, talked too much but compared to Mangini, that ain't bad. It gets bad when you lose and continue to talk shit. That's just plain classless and unworthy of a NY HC. Ryan is new to the HC job and its showing in his game management, and his coach management re: Schotts and Scott and Rhodes. Ryan is running this team like there are two HC's and that can't work. I don't care how much of a genius Schotts is credited as being, until he hopefully gets his HC job, he still works for Ryan. Now Ryan has to let Schotts know that either being all run or all pass isn't coaching, its being lazy. Schotts has to be held accountable as much as Westhoff or Pettine or any other coach on the staff genius or not. If Schotts doesn't like it, he can always go get that HC job after the season is over. Until then, make better game plans that doesn't completely turn Sanchez into Kyle Boller. Its ok to run outside every now and then and a playaction fake just might work on occasion. Ryan also has to reign in both Scott and Rhodes. He has to let them know that having class is important too. All this tweeting and talking shit and mixing it up on the sidelines before a game, then losing and still disrepecting the team that beat you is BS and unacceptable. Ryan is bordering on losing credibility amongst both the fanbase and the NY Media and that doesn't bode well either as people will stop listening and taking him and the Jets seriously without concrete results aka: wins.. Finally, Ryan has to look in the mirror and honestly assess just how many games his mismanagement (TO's, 2pt convs, etc..) cost his team this year. He's coaching like a rookie but he's still a DC primarily and that has to change as well. His dad wound up being a lousy HC because he couldn't transition from DC to HC. I really hope Ryan doesn't suffer that same fate. As we all know, once the credibility is gone, the coach isn't far behind. Ryan has been not simply a breath of fresh air, but a veritable gale force wind. Going forward, his team has to win or at the very least, put together 60mins of good football by ALL UNITS of the team. That includes Schotts and Pettine. Maybe this team can develop under Ryan 2.0 after all of this. If they don't, there won't be much reason to look forward to Ryan 3.0 will there..
I fucking love Rex Ryan as the Jets head coach...He's bringing an attitude change. It's who he is. As for letting Schotty run the offense...Rex admitted that he knows very little offense. I mean does Sean Payton dive into the defense for New Orleans? Josh McDaniels on the defense? He isn't close to losing credibility to me. He brought a nasty defense, unlike the vanilla Mangini ran. The offense has the #1 attack in the NFL...
Yea, what you wrote was very well-written, but I have to say I don't agree with a lot of it. I agree he should take hold of schotty a little bit more, and that rex really needs to learn to micromanage the game more (to's, 2 pt conversions, etc). I have a problem with the twitter bullshit but I have no problem with players talking a big game. I know parcells always said you are what your record says you are, and I agree, but I still cant help but say we are better than a .500 team, way better.
Good post, I agree with everything but what you're saying about Rex running his mouth. Sure he runs his mouth, but he hasn't really trash-talked anyone. Scott and Rhodes are a different story though.. I love Scott and I think he's a riot, but Ryan does need to reign them in a bit. I'm not that worried about Rex's in-game decisions too much either. Yeah he made a couple rookie mistakes but weren't horrible.. I give him a pass on that. edit: And I'm digging the Foghorn Leghorn avatar.
Good post. it is about the micromanaging. Its about being more of an administrator than a coordinator at that point. That is the one thing he needs to work on - being an administrator on the sidelines and of the game. It'll come, it has to, or else he'll go the ways of Dick LaBeau... which would suck for the Jets. The offense is very powerful, but it can be elite if they actually stuck to one identity - the one Rex wants, not the inconsistency schotty displays. its not a whole lot to ask. That's why i hope it gets done. Its basically as much as Coughlin become a gentler coach. Its the same thing.
Summed up by a few words Rookie QB Rookie Coach Poor OC Simple as that. We lost 2 games because of our rookie QB. I don't think anyone could deny that. We lost a game because our STs sucked for the first time pretty much ever. We also lost because our OC sucked. We lost because our OC had no faith in his rookie QB for the whole entire first half against the dolphins when we have two awesome receivers, one of the best catching TEs in the league, and the top rushing attack in the league. He makes the wrong calls at the wrong time, such as not running with TJ (who had been tearing it up) in the red zone. We lost a game because our coach thought his defense could stop a team that had been running on them all night and decided he wouldn't call TO and save some time.
Ryan needs to know something about Jet history, and that no matter what else happens in the year, wherever else the Jets end up with their record, the season will be magnitudes of shittiness worse if they get swept by the fish and don't ever, ever forget that as long as you are HC for the NY Jets AND If you want someday to be remembered as an effective HC of the Jets, you will realize you are now two down to Miami, and have to have twice the wins as losses to those arrogant cakehole buffoons. It will probably take at least two years and four straight to get there, at best, but in the meantime, don't forget this. That's what he needs to do. Get it done, Rex. We will be waiting and watching.
Class has nothing, and I mean nothing, to do with winning. If it did guys Like Belichick would not be a three time superbowl winner. Chad is as classy as they come yet has never won a superbowl. How Favre has treated Green Bay and thier fans was awful, yet he won in the return to there. It has no bearign on the out come of a game. Being a classy guy will only have an effect on your marketability to the average NFL fan. It has nothing to do with what happens on a football feild. Would it be nice? Sure. Its it nessisary? Not at all. I there are more improtant things to be working on ATM. Classy would come in at close to the bottom of the list unless you really care what the POS talking heads have to say on a given show.
Being a class act goes beyond what happens on the field. It has alot to do with the perception of your team and organization as a whole which in turn, makes it more or less attractive to potential difference makers via FA. I'm not at all making the case for class = winning. Class requires a certain amount of discipline which will manifest itself on the field. This Jets team sorely lacks discipline and that manifests itself time and again at the end of close games. Why does this Jets team find a way to lose? They don't have the discipline to finish. They have yet to learn that old school saying: its not how you start, but how you finish that counts... Ryan needs to simply stop trying to be both DC and HC. He's human and on top of that, a rookie HC. He's on a learning curve so why make things hard on himself. He has to learn the lesson his Dad never did. He's HC now of the NYJ's.. Time to really do that job Rex and stop delegating everything. If you wanted to remain a DC, you should have stayed in B'more.
I have to agree with what you said here. I think all the hype about Rex's talk now that we've lost a few is a little overblown. The guy's gonna be who he is and he happens to be pretty vocal.
I agree with a lot of what you said, Rhodes definitely needs to shut up cause he isn't making any plays on the field..
FA is all about the money. Players will sometimes turn down a similar, but slightly higher number, to go with a lower offer. They will almost never turn down millions to go where they want. If the cap is retained we need to start to focus more on our own guys who have paydays comming up. In a non capped world, the Jets have a huge advantage in revenue over all but the top teams in the league.
And I thought I was cynical. FA's want the money, but they also want to be a part of a winning organization. I wonder just how many FA's will sign in Cleveland for the money knowing what's going on there.. Getting back to the class = discipline = winning argument for a minute, I truly believe that the more disciplined teams usually win the close games late. They simply do not beat themselves which is a trait this Jets team has shown over the last 5 weeks. That's not all on the players, but its a result of coaching too and it starts at the top. Ryan can be as pissed off as he wants, but until he REALLY drops the hammer, its all media food. I'm talking releasing Hartsock after his next fckup. Ryan is the boss and his direct reports aka: coaches, should be feeling the heat over this team's lack of discipline and poor performance in pressure situations. Even the Sainted Westhoff should be called out for his team's lack of performance this season. Not one KR for a TD and our PR game is reminding me of the good old daze of Dedric Ward. That unit is underperfoming and doesn't have the "rookie" excuse that the offense is riding..
Like he said, if the offer is relatively close they will go where they want. If cleveland offers 3 million more a year than anybody else, the FA is going to cleveland.
How about NONE .... Last I checked, Ryan had NOTHING to do with a single turnover ... 2pt Conversions, IMHO those were called EXACTLY when they should have been ... You can debate all day long and half the people would agree and half the people would disagree as to his decision to go for 2 ... I would think that having the 2nd ranked "D" in the NFL would keep his credibility pretty good ... Almost all of the turnovers have been caused by rookies ( Sanchez and Greene ) ... They are after all is said and done, still rookies, mistakes will be made, you cannot coach that out of them ... Playing time and experience with a solid base/coaching background will minimize those ... NO ONE would expect our rookies to play mistake free for the year ..
The reality is that Cleveland ain't gonna do that. If you want to throw Oakland in as another example, I'd be curious as to how many folks would sign there, given the present circumstances. Its not always about the money. Sometimes, its about the state of the franchise. That is, FA's want the chance to win as much as they want the money..
There is nothing wrong with delegating as Rex has done, if what you had in place was working fine, the problem that he is faced with is that he delegated the offense to someone who is at best an average or below average OC. Rex will do fine with his style of coaching, once he starts to manage his personnel. He can still call the defense, but as you pointed out, it is a learning curve for him and I think he will do fine. Sean Peyton, is the HC/OC of the Saints, all he did was get a new DC and look at the team now, same for Denver, Mcdaniels is HC/OC but they now have a good DC. The Jets have a good HC/DC, ST coach once they get a better OC this team will move to the next level.
