The best bet would be should the Sox not p/u the option on V Martinez you go hard after him but I would imagine he'll be in Boston next year. Torrealba would be next on my list or even Olivo who is no stranger to platooning. I can't imagine KC will pick up his option to platoon The key is depth for me, the reason we have failed over the years is a lack of depth. I'd sign a guy like Scutaro who is old but came off a great year in Toronto (although nobody knew because the Blowjays are well the Blowjays) He can play 3 IF positions and should come cheap. I may also look to Toronto for a guy like Aaron Hill, The Jays are going to have a fire sale and he is another under the radar guy who is capable of producing big numbers. I like Blalock's game but I don't like his durability. The last thing we need is a guy who misses 30 games because he is injured for a month and a half. I'd stay away from Branyan because he had a career year in his contract year and really isn't much of an upgrade over Delgado. I guess that leaves LaRoche who is capable of big things and is only 30. He's a probable 25-30 HR guy and has been fairly healthy. As far as pitching I'm looking at the Cuban kid Aroldis Chapman De La Cruz, 22 years and looked really good for Cuba in the WBC. He's a defection so I don't know if there is a Dice K rule in effect here but he gives the Mets something they need and that's another kid that throws some heat.. he's been clocked near 100 MPH. He's got tons of potential and could one day project as a top of the rotation guy. There are lots of OF that the Mets could look at but my suspiscion is that the Rays will allow Crawford to walk and that's the way we need to go.
to address starting pitching, i think we need to sign two outta these 5: lackey, harden, Garland (who i think is a MUST because he puts up solid, consistent numbers and eats up innings), pineiro, and marquis.
If I were Joel Pineiro I would have to have a huuuugge offer to convince me to leave St. Louis. We've seen this story with Dave Duncan before.
Yes but Hill had had a great season the year before he got hurt. He has shown that he can have a great season even after coming off a nasty injury. As for Scutaro he'd purely be a depth signing but he could certainly platoon with Castillo.
you bring up a great great point. i actually wanted us to fire warthen and try to convince duncan to be our new pitching coach, but that obviously didn't work out. it's hard to say this, but i think it's safe to say we were a bit premature in firing rick peterson. it's obvious that, taking away all the negatives with him, at the least what he was able to do was make SERVICABLE pitchers out of perez and maine.
The Mets definitely should've help onto Peterson. Look at his track record: the guy is one of the better pitching coaches in the game. I'm sure that he'll be employed again sooner rather than later, despite some of the obvious problems he had in New York.
Does anyone in baseball actually think Murphy is good, other than Minaya and Manuel? 12 HRs...and .313 OBP...from a 1st baseman. Who would want that? He'd have to be a bit part in like a 4 man package for a big trade to happen, IMO. I wouldn't be surprised if Lackey is a Met next season. I hope so. It's more fun for me as a Yankee fan when the Mets aren't an abomination.
Maybe you want to check out how Don Mattingly and Tino Martinez did in their first year playing first base. If you were their general manager, you probably would have traded them also.
Hey, we would root for your team if they were playing the Red Sox, Orioles, Blue Jays or Rays in the WS.
Honestly that's the way I feel.... I would say what about all the innocent fans but I don't care. Actually there would no two more deserving fanbases on the planet outside of Boston. Oh and Joe Buck too
LOL, Mattingly? Seriously? Murphy's first full year: 2009, 24 years old, 155 games 60 runs, 135 hits, 38 doubles, 12 HRs, 63 RBIs, .266 BA, .313 OBP --------- Mattingly's first full year:1984, 23 years old, 153 games 91 runs, 207 hits (led league), 44 doubles (led league), 23 HRs, 110 RBIs, .343 BA (led league), .381 OBP. I realize many Mets fans like Murphy's "toughness" and "hustle" and "by golly, look at the little champ playing his heart out, God bless him". That's all well and good. I'm sure he's trying hard and he's a nice guy. It certainly is your prerogative to cross your fingers and hope that he's a bit of a late-bloomer, and maybe he can turn into a Tino Martinez type in a few years. It just makes you sound a little delusional when you mention his name along with Mattingly, who was one of the most feared hitters in the AL in his prime. No, I would not have traded away the 23-year-old Mattingly. The 24-year-old Murphy? I'd be open to offers, to say the least.
Wow, Phillies vs Yankees in the WS, it doesn't get worse then this for Mets fans. Easy decision for me though, Let Go Yankees!
