Why would you care about the Hail Mary pass? Granted, it was a MoonBall, but how many times is he going to be throwing that pass in his career? Look at the zip he gets on the outs he throws from the short-side of the field on a sideline out to the opposite side of the field. He gets plenty of zip on these type of throw. Ball doesn't flutter and for the most part, remains in a tight spiral. His arm, while not elite like Cutler or Stafford, is very good.
you don't have to be a proven quarterback in the NFL to have a great arm. i don't like stafford and thought he was pretty crappy at georgia (im a gator, but objectively speaking i wasnt very impressed). that said, dude has a cannon. is he a great quarterback? no..and hasnt proved it yet obviously but you can't deny his arm. side note unrelated to the quoted post....romo is definetely not a 5. that was an insane statement.
Relax, it's not meant as a slight to Sanchez. He just doesn't possess the natural ability to throw the ball to be mentioned in that category. There are few guys who can throw the ball like Stafford in the NFL. It doesn't mean he'll pan out as a good QB, but I don't think anyone in the NFL says the kid doesn't have anything other than a cannon for an arm. And that cannon can and already has hurt him early in his career. He simply throws the ball way too hard when a pass with less zip and more loft is required.
i think far more important than his arm strength right now is his ball handling. that is scary. i would say a 7 or so.
That moonball was horrible and reminded me of Pennington. It was also like a 53 yard pass which made it worse. Other than that pass which may have slipped or been launched way too high, I would have said his arm strength is like a 7.
Arm strenth isn't a problem for Sanchez he has a strong arm well over above average he can make all the throws. He's pretty accurate aswell.
7?! Be reasonable. I love the guy, but a least wait until he overthrows someone on a deep route to say he's got one of the stronger arms in the league. I voted a four. I'd say his arm is significantly stronger than Pennington, but not above average. Jamarcus Russell should be ten, btw. ADDED: And just to be fair, I'm assuming Pennington wasn't put at 1 to be an insult. If I were rated at 1 arm strength... fuck yeah 7+. But there are tons of strong armed quarterbacks in the league who can't do what Sanchez does.
Hahaha, I just read the whole thread. Mick called me a fucking gay. Let me see if I can justify this... Manning- stronger Berger- stronger Schaub-mmm... weaker, maybe even. Brady- stronger Romo- same, maybe stronger. Flacco- stronger Rivers- stronger Orton- weaker Manning- stronger Warner- weaker Garrard- hmmm... couldn't say. same? Palmer- stronger Campbell- stronger Rodgers- stronger Collins- stronger Favre- stronger Brees- stronger Ryan- stronger Edwards- weaker Cutler- stronger Hill- I have no idea Stafford/Culpepper- stronger Delhomme- weaker McNabb- stronger Boller/Bulger- stronger Quinn- weaker Anderson- stronger Johnson- don't know Russell- strongest arm in the league, by far, worst QB in the league, by far. Yeah, I'm standing by my four. For the record, I'll take Mark over the whole bunch.
you make valid points jcrotch. i hadnt thought of it that way but now that i look at it you definitely have an argument.
I'd say that Sanchez and Rivers have comparable arms. Rivers has an odd throwing motion where he lunges to get the required zip on the deep outs, but it gets the job done. Not the strongest arms by any stretch of the imagination, but both have excellent touch/accuracy on the deep ball. I'd say it's a good comparison overall as well.
I'd imagine Roethlis... And Matt Ryan is another QB that relates well in arm strength and overall ability IMO.
You will give him a stronger arm rating only when he overthrows people? Maybe he likes hitting them in stride instead of throwing it as far as he can (like Russell) And I think Matt Ryan and Mark Sanchez have the same arm strength...both around a 7.
Having played waaaay too many hours of 'Track and Field' as a kid, I think the main problem with that Hail Mary pass was the angle. He held the button down too long, and the pass went straight up
I would be willing to bet that Sanchez never had to throw a hail mary pass at USC and our OC was negligent in never having him practice it. He actually showed me ALOT of arm strength by throwing it as high as he did for 40 yards, or whatever the actual distance was.
Using a hail mary pass to judge a guy's arm strength or technique is laughable. The QB is under a lot of stress to make a perfect pass into a high amount of traffic and there are too many factors to take into account. Arm strength in itself is pretty overrated anyway, unless their arm is falling off like Penny's has been for the past 6 years. Mechanics are much more important. Sanchez has superior mechanics, better than Brady had in 2001, better than Peyton had in his rookie year, and better than Cutler or Favre will ever have. He'll never throw the ball through the uprights from his own 20 yard line, and who really gives a shit? On the play where Braylon dropped the ball on the bad PI call, Sanchez threw the ball 60 yards with a nice even arc and it was on the fucking button, where only the receiver could make a play on it. Because he got his feet set and had a fantastic fluid motion. I dare Jamarcus Russell to do that 1 time in 100 tries with a pass rush in his face. Stop wasting your time worrying about his arm strength.
