why did he choose to all out blitz on that 3rd down when henne rolled out and converted.....too risky! and ryan lost the bet and the game i was begging him not to blitz on that down.....force the FG
It was more than just one play... the overall flat play of the defense most of the game was terrible...how many times did Miami punt? How about 3rd down conversions? Rex even said after the game he has been apart of a couple of bad defensive showings in the past, but nothing like this. They should never have been allowed to get into FG range.
If he laid back and played cover three or something with no blitz someone on here would have bitched about that and said "Why didn't they blitz there?". Can't win with Jets fans.
Rex is going to really have to be a great coach this week. But, I think he will have the D playinng great for this Sunday.
You would be saying that play was brilliant if they had gotten to Henne so please stop this nonsense already. This defense is built around the blitz and we failed at getting any pressure last night, the end.
Especially since that was the exact same style of play-calling that won us the Patriots and Titans games. Some Jets fans sure suck.
sorry but 3rd and 7 from our 6 yd line...is ALOT different than the past game winning blitzes...........should have done our best to force the field goal....as our blitz was fairly ineffective against their Oline fortress very different IMO....whatever
Staying back in coverage or blitzing, either way does not dictate the success or failure of that play. They rolled out, if the Jets had blitzed to the rolling side it would have worked but they didn't. Either way, their was a man on the receiver, he ran a comeback route and caught it. They did not score on that play either way. Playing a short zone doesn't mean success either. You are what you are.
Simply put we live and die with the blitz. Give me Rex Ryans aggressive tone setting defensive scheme over Eric Manginis read and react bend but dont break defense or Herm Edwards Cover who and prevent defense any day of the week and twice on sundays.
when it works, peeps throw the "we blitz 'cause its fun" quote all around... when it doesn't peeps complain. welcome to the new york market Rex.
How about giving credit to Henning for calling the perfect play against that defense, the OL for making their blocks, and Henne for making the perfect throw? The Jets D got beat yesterday in every way - physically at the point of attack, in schemes, and in execution. That's why I find the comments of some people that it won't happen again so funny - why not, exactly? Unless something fundamentally changes between now and November 1, I see no reason not to expect another very tough game then.
Maybe the reason Mangini turned into a pussey last year on D is we can't legitimately rush the passer without a full house sellout on D?
That last play where Miami slid protection was a great play. They were clearly a step ahead of Ryan since they knew the blitz was coming. It was also a great throw by Henne. Maybe we became a tad bit too predictable. I agree with you in that Rex Ryan needs to go back to the drawing board and add new wrinkles to this defense. I hope Lito and Strickland are ready to play sooner than later as well. We're gonna need everyone if we're gonna make a push for the Playoffs.
The Jets did only 2 things wrong with the game plan last night that I can see. First off, they seriously underestimated the strength of the Miami OL. The Dolphins OL were ready for the blitz packages the Jets ran, they picked them up and won the muscle game. Secondly, they made no kind of adjustment for Miami's OL and their ability to pick up the blitzes. They just kept on throwing the kitchen sink at the Miami OL and it held up like the Hoover damn. Rex Ryan just had THAT much confidence that his defense would eventually break them. He bet wrong. He admitted as much after the game from post conf interviews I saw. Good learning experience for him as a HC. He'll take something from it and adjust in the future (hopefully).
