So I noticed from the NY/NY Super Bowl thread that there are a few fans here that despise the Giants. A few days ago a discussion about the feelings of Giants' fans towards the Jets came up on the Giants' board I frequent. There were responses ranging from one end of the spectrum (abject hatred) to the other (look forward to their games almost as much as the Giants) and the motivations behind these responses were myriad. Let me now pose the questions to the posters on this board: do you like the Giants or not, and why? Please be as honest as you care to be and elaborate on your reasoning; I really do wonder if the motivating factors for Jets' fans are similar to those motivating Giants' fans. The only thing I ask is that you keep your responses mature as I really don't want this to devolve into a GIANTS R TEH SUX thread. I know that some will hate the Giants, probably for good reason, and have a reason behind that, but just try not to bash and contribute nothing. Later on I'll post the responses from the Giants' board, if you like. *Crosses fingers* I hope this doesn't go horribly wrong... EDIT: I forgot to mention my own thoughts on the Jets. I root for the Jets and want them to do well, as long as the Giants are having a comparable or better season. This, to be honest, is less about the team and more about the fans as I have some friends at work and school who like to bring it to my attention when the Jets win and the Giants don't.
I can't say that I HATE the Giants but I do seem to find myself rooting for whoever they are playing against unless it is an AFC team from which the Jets could benefit from their loss.
I'm not a fan of the Giants as such but I can get behind them beating AFC teams. I also enjoy when they beat the Burgundy&Gold since it lowers the annoying level around the area here. If they lose a random game it is no skin off my nose.
The only real hatred I ever felt for the Giants was when Dhani Jones injured Pennington. I'm pretty sure we did the same to someone on the Giants though... Otherwise, I don't mind the Giants. There are a lot of teams in the NFL I hate and usually for a reason... I don't really hate the Giants. Plus, I hate New England so much that I was avidly rooting for the Giants in the Super Bowl. All my Patriot fan friends are douchebags, and all my Giants fan friends are nice... so that was easy for me.
For me I grew up in a houshold where my father and older brother were big Giant fans. Being born in 63 I was drawn to the newer franchise the Jets and always had a inter-house rivarly. Over the years though i have developed a bigger hatred for the Giants mainly because of the "elitest" attitude of their fans and the media in comparison to the Jets.
I hate the Giants more than any team in any sport(duke basketball is probably 1a). I grew up around alot of Giant fans and we always talk trash to each other. It was all in fun and still is but it's hard when you have play in Giants Stadium and the Giants have won 3 SBs in my lifetime while the Jets haven't even made one. I'm a Yankee fan too and I don't hate the Mets b/c they are never a threat which is why I guess alot of Giant fans don't hate the Jets.
When I first became a fan of the Jets, it was a toss up between Big Blue and the J.E.T.S, so I guess they are my second team really, Liked them even more after beating the unbeatable
I casually root for the Giants when they play. If they're in the playoffs I root for them. The only time I'll root against them is when they're playing the Jets.
I don't care for the Giants. At all. However, they rank 4th on my list of despised teams. They may have even dropped to 5 after what they did to the Patriots.
Osi's injury last year immediately springs to mind, but I'll bet if you were to look back you'd find the teams have a history of injuring each other in that particular game. Both sides get amped and they play hard and, unfortunately, sometimes somebody gets unlucky.
It's jealousy. It's an older brother, younger brother type of hatred, IMHO. Giants have won 3 Super Bowl in the last 30 years, they are the more popular team, the stadium is in their name. I wonder if part of the hatred also stems from the Mets - Yankees rivalry, since most Jet fans are Met fans as well.
I'm a die-hard Jets fan. Having said that, I'm also a NY sports fan, in general. So, I always root for the Giants unless they are playing the Jets. I've always really liked the Giants and I love to see them do well. (similarly, I'm a die-hard yankee fan but I also like the Mets and will always root for them unless they are playing the yankees)
I see that. Part of me feels like, being close to NYC as I am, I'm going to get Jets' coverage whether I like it or not, so why not take an interest in the team?
I don't really have a problem with them. I generally root for them when they play AFC teams. I was happy for them after they gutted the soul of the Patriots at the Superbowl.
Yeah, I always felt the same way (grew up in North Jersey). Also, my dad roots for both the Jets and the Giants, and growing up watching football with him, I learned to appreciate both teams. (The only reason I chose to become a Jet fan was because green was my favorite color when I was little - actually, it still is)
I am a Diehard Jets & Mets fan which correlates to decades of suffering. Yet, since the Giants and Yankees are in the opposing conferences and from NY I do route for them. I feel I will have a NY vs. NY SB way before I see one in the WS again.
There definitely wasn't one specific incident. Its just years of hearing how classy and loyal the Giants fanbase is, while the Jets were always treated with contempt especially from local radio and newspapers( Star Ledger - Izenberg).
by the way, I think we did a poll on this very issue (a poll regarding feelings towards Giants on this board) last year . . . I'm too lazy to actually find it.
