Kind of a side-note but there was a nice ceremony honoring a few Yankees tonight. Melky for his cycle this year, Jeter for breaking the franchise hits record, and Mo for eclipsing 500 saves (the latter 2 being a lot more phenomenal of course). Nothing but class with the ceremony and congrats to these Yanks for their accomplishments!
haha farnsworth, he was good for us in 2008 seemed like Girardi had a really positive effect on him...then we traded him for Pudge
and he's a lunatic. He wasn't that good in 2008 either. kc's catcher threw the ball away when hinske went to steal second. winning run at third
Ok I lied, I actually went to the game. My friend who I hadn't seen in awhile and who doesn't log onto AIM often, was logged on at 4 PM. I asked him if he wanted to go and he said yes. Man, that was quite possibly one of the most entertaining nights this season. Kyle Farnsworth.
Omg im glad you went man...Just got back from dropping the gf off. What a great great atmosphere for a game thats pretty meaningless. But what a coincidence, we get there an hour before the game and there are ceremonies to honor Mariano, Jeter, Melky with greats such as Reggie, Yogi, Winfield, Tino, Bernie and with guys like Pettite and Jorge speaking it was amazing. Onto the game, when Farnsworths head popped onto that big screen at the stadium there was a HUGE BURST of LAUGHTER all around us. I knew, they knew it...this was gonna be one exciting 9th. He didnt disappoint...People yelled "farnsssssssworth" all the way back to 34st ahaha
I tried to get a "We Want Farnsworth" chant started in my section in the 7th inning, but it wasn't happening. Everyone flipped a shit when we realized it was him out there. We were all thinking the same thing -- "oh shit here comes Soria, game over" Then bam! Definately a good amount of people at the stadium for a meaningless game, and it surprised me how many people stayed to the end. It wasn't like that in April and May.
I missed most of the game but saw the highlights. The Royals are just sad. Kansas City is where sports go to die. And why can't Burnett seem to buy a win no matter how he pitches?! Anyway, getting back to the postseason pitching situation, we can assume that the following are a lock: CC AJ Andy Joba Mo Hughes Coke The only question on the above being whether Joba is a starter or not. I wouldn't mind a 3 man rotation myself. As for the rest of the pen, the Yankees have stated they want to go with 10 pitchers total. Given the above 7, there is only room for three out of the following 5: Aceves Gaudin Marte Robertson Bruney I think it's going to be hard for Girardi to not want to bring Marte. Who doesn't want two lefties in the pen, especially quality ones, especially in the playoffs? I think it's pretty hard to deny that Robertson is a very big part of our pen, so how do you not bring him? Then, even if you scratch Bruney from the equation, you still have to choose between Aceves or Gaudin. I just can't understand why they wouldn't want to go with 12 pitchers. Especially since when they're on, not one of them is a risky option to have in a game. Why do we need 6 bench players? The starting lineup is going to be: Damon LF Jeter SS Teixeira 1B ARod 3B Matsui DH Posada C Swisher RF Cano 2B Gardner/Cabrera CF The bench will then be: Cabrera/Gardner (depending who doesn't start) Molina Hinske Hairston Pena? Cervelli? When the hell are any of those guys going to pinch hit? The only real chances at substitutions are in center and at catcher for possible defensive purposes. Do we really need two backup catchers? Do we really need 3 guys who can play multiple positions? Besides the non-starter of Gardner/Cabrera and Molina, do we need any of those guys as much as additional pitching? Pitching wins titles Joe. Your predecessor couldn't remember that either.
Two backup catchers gives you a lot of flexibility. You can DH Posada and sit Matsui against a lefty, but still pinch run for Molina if need be. I think they take Guzman over Pena for the speed, since Hairston covers Pena's positions. And if the Yanks take the longer series they don't need more than ten pitchers. CC, Pettitte, and AJ start. Robertson, Joba, Hughes, and Mo could basically pitch every game, if need be, although I'd hope they wouldn't have to. Aceves is there if they need a long man. Marte and Coke for lefty matchups. That's your ten. If the Yanks were to need more than ten pitchers, they wouldn't be winning the series, anyhow.
Guys like Pena, Gardner, Hinske are needed for those scrappy wins in postseason. Remember Luis Sojo and Vizcaino...that dude was the last guy to help the yankees win the World Series
Everybody expects the division series to be a 3 man rotation. If they start on Tuesday they get an extra day off which keeps the three on normal rest. I guess the issue then becomes how the LCS shapes up depending on how fast or how slow the first series finishes. You also hope that if Detroit wins it stays close through Sunday when Verlander would probably end up pitching again.
I see your point, but I disagree. As far as the position players, yeah, I see your line of thought. However, for the pitching, how do they work Joba? Does he pitch out of the pen the whole postseason, or do they plan on putting him back in the rotation after the DS? We've already seen what interfering with his rest schedule does. To me, he either starts all along, or he doesn't start at all. I don't have a problem going with 3 starters throughout, as long as that is the plan. I just want it to be the plan, and not changed after the first series. I prefer to have more pitchers for specific matchups. Normally I don't like micromanaging, but in the playoffs, every at-bat matters. Plus, I think it's pretty shitty to not carry Gaudin after the work he put in.
no way in hell can the Yankees justify having Bruney on the postseason roster. You can leave him out of the equation. I would do 14/11 and bring the following pitchers: CC AJ Andy Joba Mo Hughes Coke Aceves Gaudin Marte Robertson everyone except for Bruney it's pretty easy, actually.
