I was pissed that he had a healthy year for the fish last year, but I told the fish fans that it wouldn't last. It didn't. I've talked to a couple this week and they are like yeah, we knew it was coming, too. Now they are thinking Henne gets his chance. I doubt Chad comes back to them next year, at least as the starter. I don't think that was their plan even if he stayed healthy this year. I have thought for some time he would make a good coach, possibly a great one. I think that's his future. I have not been a big fan because I think his fans gave him too much credit and ignored his shortcomings, to the extent they seemed to be more fans of his than of the Jets. Those who softened their view of the fish when he went there only confirm that view. He looked great in 02 until the Raiders showed how to game plan against him. He had his moments since, but that loss was the beginning of a long, drawn out ending that may be finished now. That about covers it.
Chad Pennington was nothing like Tino Martinez. Martinez was one of the best defensive 1B in baseball. He was a quality power hitter. He won titles. Chad was limp as much as he wasn't, and did not have many dimensions to his game. All the football intellect in the world didn't change the fact that the guy couldn't throw a 20 yard spiral consistently. Class is overrated when it's the primary thing you discuss about a player. Curtis Martin exemplified class. Tino Martinez exemplified class. Do you ever say "Curtis Martin was one classy football player" before you say "Curtis Martin was a great running back?" Bingo.
My god, people, where is the bitterness coming from? Just because other people seem to have overvalued Chad, doesn't mean you have to hate him to make up for it! Yes, by the end of his tenure, he was struggling mightily, but he'd been through countless surgeries and operations to try and come back and help this football team. And he led us to the playoffs as many times as any QB before him. No, he wasn't Namath, but we haven't had one remotely similar ever since. You guys can have any QB other than Namath in Jets history. I'll take Chad.
I get what you're saying, I meant for the comparison to be along the lines of fans not being able to let go when it clearly was time to move on.
Just because you're resilient after you're hurt doesn't make up for how shitty you are. Nobody gives a fuck about heart and grit and being the little guy when you're detrimental to you're team. Or at least, nobody should give a fuck.
I have zero respect who hears the name Chad Pennington and says "Noodle arm." Those people don't have the slightest clue about Chad, football, or toughness. No clue. He will always be one of my favorites and I still wear his jersey every Sunday with pride.
Definitely not Richard Todd he had more picks then TD's, just like Namath -I know. It pretty much has to come down to Chad or Ken. Ken had almost twice as many games played compared to Chad. Chad threw for 82 TD's and Ken for 124, and Chad has much less picks too. But I think Ken had a higher pedigree and had much higher expectations so it's easy to pick Chad. I don't know, Chad I guess.
That's about the weakest response imaginable. I'm a professional athlete now? Cool. Send me my fucking $62 million over the next 7 years. Just like Noodle Arm got.
Oh, and this -- just because he's the second best QB in Jets history doesn't mean we have to embrace him. Yeah, second best is nice -- but not when you come from THIS talent pool. Holy crap. You might have been fine with accepting the mediocrity that is Chad Pennington, but I sure as hell won't, and I'm sure as hell not going to glorify it either.
I will always remember Chad, swinging his little towel on the sidelines as the team--who at this point would be struggling to better their 4-9 record--tries to rally back from a 17-point deficit with less than 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter. Man that Chad had heart.
Chad had tremendous heart and cared about the team. That 2002 season was possibly the most memorable for the jet franchise besides the super bowl year. Starting out 2-5 and Pennington leads them to the playoffs, amazing. If he stayed healthy he would have been the best jet quarterback ever imo.
Holy crap. Chad was the second-best QB the Jets ever had? hmy: I'm not even a Vinny fan and Testaverde was better than Chad. Chad led us to the playoffs? Congrats. Vinny had us in the AFC Championship. Vinny > Chad. As BB said, Kenny O, better than Chad. I don't know about QBs older than O'Brien, but whatever. Saying Chad is the second-best QB the Jets have ever had (even not counting Sanchez) is just cluelessness. The dude was a football genius who threw like a girl before they Frankensteined his shoulder. As for "tough" guys, guys who are "tough" aren't fragile. Chad is made of glass. Broken glass. I liked the guy when he was a Jet. But he's not a Jet anymore, and the tail end of his career as a Jet was wholly constructed of suck. Do you people still root for Parcells too? He got the Jets farther than Chad ever did.
I never thought he was that great of a quarterback, but I was always impressed with him as a person, definetly a class act. Sad to see him injured again, hate to see a person go out like that.
