This is true, the Jets have been pretty fond of running Jones for an iso right up the middle all season. Even though he's been ineffective he has set up the outside runs for Leon Washington, so that's a bonus. I agree that he needs to start playing better though. The blocking for the most part hasn't been there for him but he could be hitting the line a little harder to at least give himself a chance of finding a hole.
I don't think it's him. Look at the plays he runs on, they're different than the times when Leon runs. Also, when he runs, it's pretty obvious. Today was a day where he had nowhere to go, no holes to run through, etc.
jones is a north to south runner like curtis martin was yes, he depends the o-line to open up holes, but that's the type of runner he is the titans are stout against the run as others have said, they utilize leon in different ways, he generally doesn't have to run up the middle like jones is expected to
yeah well....he's not moving the pile...and I'm not seeing any extra effort (a la Leon W.) from TJ..... He's getting contact, and he's taking a nosedive thereafter.
Tennessee came into the game allowing 1.9 ypc, which was best in the league. Did you really expect Jones to go out and light them up? I'd like to see Greene get some carries too but I doubt he would have done much better.
That becomes way too predictable though. If you keep doing that, the defense knows what you are gonna do based on who is in the backfield. It looks like they are already on to it.
Neither one of them were terribly effective today, but that was a tough run defense we were up against today. I'm not going to pass judgment on Jones yet. I do wonder if its because his role is a little different this year and his carries are down. If he got a few more carries (like last year), he'd be more likely to break one of those off for 20-30 yards, padding his stats like he did week 1. I think we are more effective with Leon getting those extra carries, not TJ. It'll be interesting to see how/if things change any if Green makes an impact. I'm starting to wonder if Greene will ever play, but I guess they want those ribs to heal well, esp since we don't really need him that much.
They need to keep having Sanchez come out throwing until other teams have to stop loading up the box. It's not really 100 %TJ's fault, but as our starter he really needs to make some plays himself, even when the line can't open up a clear lane for him. Leon at least seems to be able to scrabble and crawl forward to turn a 2 yard run into 4 or 5, TJ just goes right down...
Again, yes, TJ has been a disappointment thus far. However, today was hardly inexcusable. It was the Titans. No one runs well up the middle against them, and that's all we're using TJ to do. Wait until the next few games; if he continues to struggle, we can call for Shonn Greene then.
He had nowhere to go , he was hit as soon as he touched the ball. The run blocking has a long way to go to break Jones loose.
Jones is a solid back, good thing is he doesnt have to carry the load, hes splitting carries with Leon. Hes still gonna contribute to this team
I still feel the line is the main culprit, but Washington can squeeze through the smallest of gaps and make something out of nothing. At the time beng,Leon should be getting more of the carries.
There is no point comparing TJ to Leon, they are completely different backs. This is the type of RB that Jones has always been. He needs his OLine to create holes whereas Leon doesn't.
It's not the explosiveness, it's the reaction time. He's a split-second slow on making his first move and so the first guy is almost never missing on him. He really is 31.
I have a hunch he would suffer the same fate, he seems to run more like Jones than Leon, and Leon seems to be able to make plays because he is smaller and able to wriggle and crawl forward whereas TJ (and I think this would be true for Greene too) has no room to compliment his running style.
