Anyway, I want everyones advice on which team I should follow. Do you guys stick to local teams ? Would they be Army or syracuse ?

While we are supportive of the local teams(Rutgers, Syracuse), here in NY metro area there are so many graduates from colleges all over the country that you literally can go to a pub and find everyone rooting for a different team. Most of my friends follow the Big 10 conference since they are graduates of Michigan & Penn State & the SEC conference since they are considered THE power conference in which one of the teams (Florida, LSU) will almost always play for the National Championship. There is also huge following for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Now you rooting for them would be quite funny also.

IMO, start to follow a conference. Since we are in the 4th/5th week of College football, most Teams will be playing within their conference. Get to know all the teams in that conference and it will make it easier for you to enjoy the games.

NY area fans follow a mix....I'd say mostly Big Ten, ACC & SEC....any of the 3 would be a good starting point. The SEC has the most quality NFL caliber players....Florida and Alabama are stacked.

if you have any association with someone at a school then talk to them and they can get you started (maybe rooting for that school) the best thing to do is pick a good school that does not get alot of hype ie Boise State, there are good schools that are not ranked in each conference (you should do your own research on that)

Personally, I began rooting for LSU for two reasons, because frankly college football in the city gets less attention than hockey does. Second I had family connections at LSU so I began to root for them.

The things that you have to know are
SEC is the best conference in college football
Recruiting process is entirely different than the draft, in that the way teams acquire talent is much much different

As a Connecticut resident I have to throw my vote toward UCONN Football which is starting to contend for the first time ever..

Michigan! No particular reason, just grew up watching college football and took a liking to them. Good team with good rivalries and its fun to hate on Ohio State. Ill also root for syracuse when they are on too.
