I actually thought Harris got away with a horse collar tackle on his sack. My friend and I were waiting for the flag but it wasn't thrown.

yeah I think you're right C. The totem pole exists everywhere in life, and I guess the NFL is no different.

Simms said it was because the player was falling backwards due to momentum.

Nope. The horse collar specifically states the player must be behind the person being tackled (as Harris was), must grab them by the neck of the jersey (as Harris did), while the opponent is moving away from them (Schaub was stationary in the pocket.)

The rule was put in specifically to handle the situation where a player is running down the field and a defensive player behind him grabs him by the jersey in that manner and pulls him down. It doesn't apply in other situations. It's not like a facemask infraction.

You can argue it should be, but it is not currently.

Plus, in his "1O Things I Think" which usually is 50 things because he has 1 a-z, 2 a-z, etc:
1d. "The Jets don't look exactly like the 2008 Ravens, but they do leave some black-and-blue calling cards."

Hopefully Bart Scott will realize if they are calling the roughing call without reason, resulting in a penalty that's worth making the call and gives Tom a headache and a puddle in his pants.

If Gholston puts the exact same hit on Brady that he put on Carr and draws a 15 yarder for it, I doubt anyone here will be disappointed.

Unfortunately I think league rules provide that any hit on Brady is a penalty.

Yeah that's true, even if you look at him with a stink eye it's a 15 yarder.

Gholston would get fined and a possible suspension for it because it was Tom Brady

As long as the Jets stay high on Brady and avoid running into him full force after the pass is well away they'll be fine. If they go low on him they're going to get called on it unless they're blocked into him.

It's true that the NFL protects him, as Vilma found out a few years ago, but the way the Jets are blitzing at this point and the way the Pats protect him (poorly) there's no way the Jets don't him him hard a half dozen times at least and the officials can't keep throwing flags on the Jets in the Meadowlands unless the Jets are really out of line.

Not a penalty if it's in the pocket. Ditto for the RB.

I think it's fitting that Scott is wearing #57, hopefully something similar may happen.

I think with the new wifey and kids on his mind, on top of coming off a injury he'll be a different player.

    I can dream can't I.

You know... if the Jets are all over Brady all day Sunday, and they draw multiple BS flags as a result of it... at some point it'll be going overboard and will need to be addressed by the league. It's one thing to protect the NFL's franchise QB, it's another to alter the game entirely for one player.

I think the Jets should go about it as if he was any other QB and just knock his lights out. Let the questions rise later when people look and say "wtf?" after the Jets kick the crap out of him and are given a default loss for doing so.

It's irrelevant in between the tackles anyway. Running backs and QBs can be tackled by the collar in the backfield. Even open field runners can be grabbed by the collar, provided they aren't immediately tackled. You can just hang there for a few yards and then pull him down.

I would love it if we were all over him all day, but the Pats have a better offensive lines and more consistent weapons (with no Walter in Houston, anyway) to dump off to if we blitz at the expense of coverage. If we start sending huge blitz packages on every play, we're going to see an awful lot of Kevin Faulk next week.

Still, I wouldn't mind sacrificing a few completions underneath to get some hits on Brady and throw off his timing a bit. Yes, he'll recover and exploit because that's what he does, but it would still be worth it.

You're right about Faulk... the Pats are going to do what they do every time they play us, and that's try to destroy us with screen passes. It'll be interesting to see what the Jets do to respond and defend against this.

Houston almost tore off a beautiful screen pass until Donald Strickland decided to introduce himself to Steve Slaton.

if there are a lot of BS flags being thrown I'd hit him harder knowing that if you're going to get penalized anyway, get you moneys worth. Hit him to a point where ACLU get involved, saying that cruel and unusual punishment is being enforced.

Exactly... if the gameplan is to knock Brady's head off his shoulders... don't let the referees take that away from us... execute it and deal with the negative side effects later.
