When you want to rely on a power running game, you hedge your bets at FB or you end up with a guy like BJ Askew.
Speaking of which, did we cut Weatherford to show Tom Tupa how much we want him to come out of retirement yet?
Absolutely. Look how we are building this offense. When Rich goes, someone needs to step in for a seamless transition. Ideally its going to be a guy who knows the system and has been around for a period of time.
Fowler will make a very solid backup ILB. I know Titan fans were upset to see him go. He's one of those give it all you got, tough, good locker room guys. He's also started in this league. His big weakness is his lack of coverage skills (read: he's a two down LB). Unfortunately, when you don't have 2nd, 3rd & 4th rd draft picks you have to pick up guys like this late in the game. Improvement over the guys we had in camp. Good pick-up.
Incidentally, in case some of you are confused as to why we pick up a guy and cut him a day later, the explanation is simple. For guys with less than four years experience, you put a claim in for them and within 24hrs he is awarded to the team with the worst record. For guys that have more than four years (i.e. Weatherford, Fowler), they simply become FA's. In their case, they sit back and field calls from different teams and find the best fit money and playing time wise. This may take a few days. So for example we put in a claim for Trapasso not knowing if we would be able to get Weatherford or not. Once we convince Weatherford to come, Trapasso is out.
The other item in that front page story says DeVito is hurt and Pouha will have to play DE in place of Ellis most likely..won't that be fun to watch?
Any news on the contract yet? The only thing I can find is : http://nyj.scout.com/2/896695.html Jets sign LB Ryan Fowler By Dan Leberfeld Posted Sep 8, 2009 Florham Park - The Jets have signed former Tennessee and Dallas LB Ryan Fowler. He was at practice on Tuesday and wearing #51. It's believed that they released FB Jason Davis to make room for him.
I'm wondering if that's a typo. The backup at DE is Pitoitua, not Pouha. And in response to the Howard Green question, he's a NT as well, but Ryan does preach versatility.
Ryan Fowler was brought here to legally co-mingle names with Sheppard. It will be Lito Fowler and Ryan Sheppard.
With a DE which is actually a DT (or NT if you will) and an OLB which is actually a DE (Gholston) I wonder if our DL will look more like a 4-3 or a 3-4...
You mean the Probowler BJ Askew? I don?t really care that we cut Davis, he wouldn?t be active on sundays anyways, at least if he doesn?t also have value in ST. If Richardson goes down, we finish the game without a FB, and sign Jehuu to the active roster. I don?t really see a reason, why we should carry 2 FBs, when we have one on the PS, who can fill in.
