A quick exchange with abyzmul sent me in the way-back machine to the old Jets website - that horrid lime green site that had ugly colors, horrible organization, and lousy content. I've been cruising through and finding old gems for the last 30 minutes. And so, I bring you for starters -

NewYorkJets.com would like to welcome all of its readers to the forty-first installment of Tuesdays with Teddy. Ted Cottrell, beginning his third season as Jets defensive coordinator, has coached in the National Football League since 1986 and is in his 29th season overall this spring. He is widely considered to be one of the finest assistant coaches in the league and is among the names atop all future head coaching lists. (and now coaching the NY Sentinels in the UFL)

In recent weeks, people have asked newyorkjets.com if Ted Cottrell was returning for his regular feature. We had to explain that even Teddy needs a sabbatical once in a while. But on Tuesday night, we sat down with the animated Chester, Pennsylvania native and talked training camp.

At Teddy?s request, we will not miss our segment next week. The Jets are scheduled to make a 13-hour trip to Japan next Tuesday. Teddy said, ?That?s a long trip. We will have at least a couple of hours available to talk.?

So next week, we will meet Teddy tens of thousands of feet above sea level to discuss Jets football. But for now, here is our land segment? (Bahahaha)

Condition: It seems like all the guys are in pretty good shape. They have been working out and working hard. For this part of the season, I think their conditioning is pretty darn good. The attitudes are positive right now. Granted, we haven?t played a game yet, but they seem a lot more confident than they were at this time last year. They have been together for a while now, and we only have a couple of new faces. Jon McGraw is not totally new at the free safety spot. He played a lot last year for us. Dewayne Robertson has been thrust into the starting role with the loss of Josh. But we are basically talking about one new starter.

#1 Pick: Dewayne is a very impressive player. He has good explosion. He has good strength and a good base. Dewayne has good power angles. No surprises. That is the reason we made him the forth pick overall. (Grumblegrumblegrumblerumblerumble. . . )

Chester: It is going to be a while with Chester McGlockton. He is working on his conditioning, getting his body back in football playing shape. Chester will be an inside player. He has played both the nose and the three-technique over the guard. He can give us good quality snaps.

I am not going to compare him to any of the big tackles I had in Buffalo. He has some similarities, but I don?t want to compare him to anybody else. I told him to get to a weight where he feels he can be comfortable. I used to tell Ted Washington the same thing. Chester can determine what weight he can be effective at.

Harp Tune: We have some room for depth at the defensive line. The other guy who has really started off like gangbusters is Alan Harper. He has done very well, and we are hoping he continues to progress the way he has.

The Next Week: We can get quite a bit accomplished before we go to Japan. We are getting some of our installations done. And our offense runs a lot of different formations, so we see multiple formations in all those plays. That really helps us with our adjustments. We are getting a lot accomplished. The guys are working together, and we are trying to keep those units together as much as we can. For example, we want the first and second-team getting used to playing with each other and talking with each other. We want them to feel how the guy next to them, in front of them, and behind them is playing.

Turnover Potential: The quickness of the overall defense has improved. That is going to help you get closer to the ball when the ball is up in the air. The quicker athlete has a chance to get to the ball before it gets to the ground. He is going to deflect passes. You have an opportunity to get to the ball quicker if it is on the ground. From our standpoint, our athleticism and speed gives us an opportunity to increase that takeaway number. But we have also been stressing a lot of ball drills. If we have an opportunity to intercept a pass, intercept it. We dropped one today. Linebacker Vince Alexander dropped one Tuesday morning that would have been a sure touchdown. He knocked it down, but didn?t catch it. We have to convert on our turnover opportunities. That is big on any team. If you win that battle, you have a good chance to win. It doesn?t mean you are going to win, but it gives you a pretty good chance to win.

Pass Rush: We have a pretty good player in Dewayne, and he is going to help us. Fergie (Jason Ferguson) is in good shape and has come back ready to play. Shaun had a good season last year and has continued to improve and get better. I am really pleased with the way our defensive line has progressed during the past year. John Abraham knows he has some guys who can push the pocket inside and that will give him an opportunity to get around and use his quickness and speed.

Execution: We won?t add a lot more to the playbook because we rely heavily on our execution. We will do a couple of things differently because we looked at our tapes from last year and made some adjustments. We added a couple of things, but not a whole bunch. At the end of last season, we were playing pretty well the past seven, eight or nine games.

Man Up: Playing more man coverage has been a point of interest. We would like to try to do that, so we get a little tighter coverage on the receivers. That will allow our pass rush to get to the quarterback because he will be forced to hold the ball for another couple of counts. And we may get a chance for an interception, fumble, or sack. I would like to play more man-to-man.

Laveranues Coles opened the scoring with a 38-yard TD catch

Chad Morton?s first punt return as a Jet went for 33 yards and set up a 38-yard TD pass from Vinny Testaverde to Laveranues Coles, giving the Jets an early 7-0 first quarter lead. But it wnt downhill from there as New York lost the first game of the Herman Edwards era, 45-24 to the Colts at the Meadowlands on Sunday.e

?At times we played pretty well,? said Herman Edwards after the game. ?Obviously, it?s tough. But we have a character football team. I like the way we fought back in the second half.? (45-24. . . holee smokes!)

Indianapolis quickly took the lead though. After answering the Jets score with a 37-yard field goal, Edgerin James ran it in from 28 yards out on a 4th and 1 at the beginning of the second quarter. James struck again halfway through the second with a 1-yard scoring run, to give Indy a 10-point lead.

With 3:35 remaining in the half, it was another special teams play that set up the Jets score. Nick Ferguson forced a fumble of a punt return and recovered it on the Indianapolis 6-yard line, where Curtis Martin took it in from on the next play, pulling the Jets to within 3 points. It didn?t last long though. Peyton Manning led a two-minute drill that resulted in a 21-yard touchdown pass to Jerome Pathon with 1:29 remaining in the half. The Jets could not move the ball on their next possession and were forced to punt. That turned out to be a bad thing as Terence Wilkins returned it 78 yards for another Colts touchdown.

It looked a little better for the Jets in the third quarter. Marcus Coleman intercepted Manning on the opening drive and returned it 36 yards to set up a 22-yard John Hall field goal. But, once again, Manning answered the call, hitting TE Marcus Pollard for a 5-yard scoring pass on the next possession.

Still, the Jets continued to fight back. Testaverde led the Jets on a 64-yard, 10-play drive that ended with a 5-yard TD pass to Richie Anderson. The defense held, and Chad Morton returned the Colts punt 24 yards to set New York up on their own 30-yard line. They drove to the Indianapolis 3-yard line, but a botched handoff resulted in a 95-yard return of a fumble recovery, and a 45-24 Colts lead.

?We lost a little steam on the punt return (Wilkins),? Edwards said. ?Then we got down close and we didn?t do our job correctly.?

The Jets offense did move th ball. Testaverde (17-25-175-2 TD) and crew gained 327 yards, including 135 on the ground. Unfortunately, Indianapolis moved it better, gaining 376 yards (154 rushing, 222 passing). Martin led the Jets rushing attack with 79 yards and added 30 yards on six receptions. Richie Anderson also added six catches for 53 yards, and TE Anthony Becht gained a team-high 58 yards on four receptions.

Defensively, Marvin Jones led the way with 12 tackles and an interception. Marcus Coleman had eight tackles and also picked off Manning, while John Abraham added five tackles and the team?s only sack.

?A game like this,? said Edwards, ?will not kill how I feel about this football team.

The Jets travel to Oakland next week to face the Raiders. Kickoff is 4 pm eastern time.

BE ON TIME. NO EXCUSES. NO EXPLANATIONS. PLAY FOOTBALL…

"Be on time. No excuses. No explanations." New Jets head coach Herman Edwards set the tone for his team from the outset this week at the veteran mini-camp that has taken place here at Weeb Ewbank Hall. If the Jets thought they were getting a player's coach, they were right. But, they got a player's coach who believes strongly in commitment, discipline and accountability.

"What's important here is that the players come together as a team and make a commitment to what we are trying to do here," said Edwards. "I tried to make the players understand that in this game you have to understand what you are playing for. It's not the name on the back of the jersey, it's the logo on the side of the helmet. We're all accountable for that."

The players seem very accepting of that. And, the atmosphere around camp shows it.

"The atmosphere is just different," said Marcus Coleman. "Everything is a lot more relaxed. It seems a little more upbeat."

"You should have been in there for Herm's (opening night) speech," said GM Terry Bradway. "It was good."

"We believed everything he said," added Wayne Chrebet.

Everyone seems to have welcomed the new regime with open arms. Players are eager to learn the new system and move quickly into the new season, none more so that quarterback Vinny Testaverde.

"Eager? No question I am," Testaverde said. "I feel good about what we're doing. We're moving in the right direction, and I think we're all pretty excited about it."

The excitement has shown in the player's actions. Testaverde has been at the complex since the day Paul Hackett arrived. Curtis Martin arrived last month to learn the offense, and others.

"Every time I called Vinny this offseason, he was here," said Chrebet.

"I came up here and tried to learn the system earlier than most people so I could be ahead," said Martin. "I'm thinking, 'I'm the only one here.' And Vinny was probably here a month before I was."

"Of the last 20 Super Bowl teams, 10 have played the West Coast offense," said Testaverde. "Nine have won. This is probably more suitable to my skills than any offense I've been in. So, yeah, I'm excited."

As for the defense, the new 4-3 style of play will be exciting for the players according to Edwards.

"It's a fun defense to play," he said. "This system takes the guess work out of it.. Players can get off the ball fast, read run or pass and attack the line. The guys will enjoy it." (ummmmm. . . . riiiight)

"Players like to use their athletic ability, their strengths, to make plays," he continued. "If you have (St. Louis Cardinals slugger) Mark McGwire on your team, are you going to ask him to bunt or swing away? You want him to swing because that's what he does best."

Edwards understands that while he has his own philosophy, he has to recognize the strengths of his players and find a way to help them do what they do best. His real philosophy as head coach is to give players an opportunity and then give them the ability to make the most of it, to do their job. It's the players, not the scheme that makes the difference. He used the biblical story of David and Goliath as an example in a press conference this week.

"David went out there, man, and he had a sling and a rock," said Edwards. "Everybody in the town was scared. David wasn't. He said, 'You know what? I'm pretty good with this sling and this rock.' He didn't have a scheme. He said, 'My scheme is I've got this rock, and I've been hitting guys in the head all my life!" BAAAAAHAHAHAHAAAAAHAHAHAHA!!!!!11111ONEONEONE!!!!

"Now if you told David, at that part of his life, 'You've got to make a bow and arrow,' David's got no chance, man," Edwards concluded. "David got crushed when he was making a bow and arrow."

The moral is simple.

"You let the players play," he said. "That's what they want to do. The scheme doesn't matter. We're going to find the best 11 guys, and we're going to go out and play football."

Making the transition to NFL head coach is serious business. It requires you to be very organized and very detailed, and managing time is probably the most important thing. I don’t want to bog down my assistant coaches with things that, in my opinion, aren’t that important, but I like to delegate things to them, because I think it makes them feel like they have some ownership of the team in a sense. You have to make them responsible for things and have them make decisions, because to do it all yourself is almost impossible. That’s worked out pretty well for us as a staff so far.

It’s been fun for me, because I think you learn a lot about yourself when you sit in this chair. People always ask you, “Were you prepared for this job?” My answer to that is, it’s like going to college. You study all those hours, take all those exams trying to become a doctor or a lawyer, and you really feel like you’re prepared. Then the day you get that job, you sit behind that desk and go, “Wow, I don’t know about this.”

And that’s okay. It’s human nature. That’s the way you should feel. I think that’s the drive that motivates successful people. If you don’t, there’s probably something wrong with you. But a lot of people don’t want to admit that.

You’re the guy now. You wanted this job. You worked for this job. Now what are you going to do with it now? The thing I’ve learned is you have to be yourself. It’s your job and you do the best you can, and that’s all you concern yourself with. I believe that if you treat people with respect and work hard, you will be successful.

NFL postpones all 15 games scheduled for September 16th

The National Football League announced today that they have postponed all 15 games that were scheduled for Sunday, September 16. The decision handed down from league Commissioner Paul Tagliabue came just two days after terrorist attacks on Washington and New York.

“We in the National Football League have decided that our priorities for this weekend to pause, grieve and reflect,” Tagliabue said. “It is a time to tend to families and neighbors and all those wounded by these horrific acts of terrorism.”

The postponement was widely supported by New York Jets head coach Herman Edwards and his players. Following about an hour morning practice, the team received the news from general manager Terry Bradway.

“This was an attack on our country,” Edwards said. “This is more of a tribute to especially the people who died in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. This is not business as usual.”

The game of professional football relies heavily upon emotion. On most Sundays, players are able to focus their energies entirely on football. But there was no way that the Jets would be able to channel their emotions for a game on Sunday. The team is devastated and their hearts remain with all victims.

“Those firemen and policemen who went in to save those people are dead,” Edwards said. “That’s reality. They are not coming home. We have people who live down the street from us who haven’t come home. It’s a tough deal. You have to play this game (football) with energy. You have to play with emotion. We’re not robots.” (nice job there, Herm)

“I think our players were drained yesterday. I could tell it in their eyes. They did the best they could but they couldn’t focus on the task at hand.”
Jets player representative Kevin Mawae spoke about how players have become retrospective in the last few days.

“It makes people look at themselves and ask what is important in my life,” Mawae said. “Is it the paycheck, the NFL or is it the things that matter the most. That is what we live for in America – life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. When the core values of this country are breeched, it makes people look into themselves.”
Quarterback Vinny Testaverde echoed the thoughts of his center. Testaverde had been one of the most vocal critics of playing on Sunday.

“I am glad about the decision not to play,” Testaverde said. “It’s somewhat of a relief for the players that the league has gone in this direction so we can mourn with those victims and those families who have been very closely touched by that. It would have been very hard to play a sporting event this weekend.”

Going through these, I'm reminded of how obnoxious it was to put the J-E-T-S JETSJETSJETS chant on the entry page. Every now and then I'd be at work and forget, and that damn thing would echo throughout my office. Like a megaphone screaming out, "N-O-T NOT WORKING, NOT WORKING, NOT WORKING!!!"

That was actually how JI.com's old half-assed homepage used to be. That was the first crappy website that forced me to shut the sound off when I navigated to new websites.

Seeing as we're going waaay back in time....this is how I remember my first visit to TGG , some of the guys there then were just downright scary.

Furthermore, I'm capable of not allowing you to view this site at all, not just the message board.
