Clemens has been given every opportunity to show he can be a starter in this league. The only thing he's done with that opportunity is show that he'll be a back up the rest of his career. I think Ainge would be a better choice for the #2 spot.
I'm not trashing the coaches at all... I just never believed that Clemens was really going to be the answer. Of course they rally behind the guy when he's the ONLY one in the lineup ready to play... before free agency, before the draft, before the training camp, etc...
Let's be honest, he's never really had a chance. He's been in 3 "competitions": 2006 as a rookie- he had no shot against a healthy Chad 2008: trdaed for favre so that ended that 2009: he was competing w/a top 5 pick. He has never really had a shot to win the job. He hasn't done anything to win it either but he ha snever really been in an even competition.
I'm with you buddy. I think I mentioned this last week. Ainge looks like a QB. Throws with ease. Clemens doesn't. If Justin McCareins doesn't drop that pass against the Ravens things might have been different. That was his time. I think his career has been longer than most would have had because of the strange QB events that has taken place here in the past. Ainge is younger and more fearless than Clemens. I guess you can say Clemens is damaged goods and for good reason. I think he needs a change of scenery. I never really pictured him as a Jets starter.
Huh? What was this pre-season about? Clemens had every opportunity to win the starting job. He didn't do it. Period. Kellen Clemens is not that good. What is this love affair with the guy that so many have?! Is it his beard?
No he didn't, please don't buy that sham. They wanted and expected sanchez to win it. KC would have had to badly outplay Sanchez to get the job and they were about even through 2 games when sanchez "won" it.
Clemens has had his chances. In 2007, he got to start plenty of times and did not do that well, although the O-line was hurt and not performing well. I agree he had no shot last year with Favre coming in. This year, however, he blew it. While some may say Sanchez was the choice going into camp, I don't think that is true. Rex has no qualms starting a rookie, but I also think we would have been fine going with Clemens for a while before turning the reins over to Sanchez. The fact is - regardless of what Rex may have thought going in - Clemens should have walked all over Sanchez in camp. This was Clemens fourth year in the league and fourth year in the same offense. Sanchez started one year in college and this is his rookie experience and first time in this offense. Based on those facts, Clemens should have been able to definitively outperform Sanchez. He didn't. In fact, Sanchez (and Ainge) outperformed Clemens. This year, Clemens should be the #2 guy. Then, we should let him walk. Ainge has earned the right to compete for #2 next year. I think Ainge is a keeper, although I don't think we should read that much into his performance against other teams' scrubs. Thus, it should be Sanchez-Clemens-Ainge in 2009, and Sanchez-Ainge-? in 2010.
Michael Vick is a big non-story as far as I'm concerned. He was never that good of a QB but his speed an escapability were what made him special. Now that he's been gone for a while, he lacks that speed and escapability and he's an even worse quarterback than he was. I think the Eagles are going to have trouble making use of him this season.
There's no way that Ainge should be the #2 QB this season. If Sanchez goes down during a game you need to have someone with actual game experience prepared to come in and run the offense. Clemens has it, Ainge doesn't. Clemens is gone in one season anyway, Ainge will be the backup then.
right... ainge doesn't need to be back up right now. It's most likely clemens is gone after this season... Ainge can learn behind him until then.
Vick was alot better than people realize. It's not all about fantasy #s, he led his team to alot of wins as a starter. It's a huge story that he is back. Where did I say I wanted Clemens to start? I am very happy Sanchez is starting.
Yes, as a quarterback-runningback hybrid under center - or not quite under center. His athletic ability allowed him to rise above his deficiencies as a QB. Now the QB part of the equation is much worse, and he's not a nearly as athletic as he was. He may be able to get back into that kind of shape again, but I doubt he'll ever be better as a QB.
I don't know that he'll evre be a good QB again but it's still a huge story that he's coming back and this was his first extensive action.
The way you said it made it seem that Sanchez unfairly got the job. I still think Clemens had his shot though, and if he was starter material he wouldve taken advantage of it.
QFT If Vick were still the athletic freak that he was in Atlanta then he would be a hot commodity, not a gadget play backup. But, if his work this preseason is any indication, he's not. Don't get me wrong, he's still got escapability, but he's not a threat to take every scramble to the house like he used to be. Which means to be successful he'll have to get more proficient at passing the ball. And if he couldn't handle the west coast offense at the top of his game, does anyone think that he's going to be better at making reads after a few years out of the game? In terms of pure QB play, Vick was the 4th best signal caller on the field last night.
