I don't like the trade down and I don't see it happening. If we did trade down with Atlanta for some reason, we should get much more in return then a backup blocking TE.. And I don't see why Atlanta would trade up. They could get Pettigrew at #24 if they were targetting him. They need secondary, linebacker and interior defensive line help. They could find some nice values at #24.. Well the draft would be OK, but I don't think Sean Smith will be around when we pick in the 2nd (not that we really need a DB that high anyway). I think Robiskie has a very good chance of going at the top of the 2nd. I really don't think he'll last that long.. Again, Cody Brown would be a great pickup and so would TJ Lang, who happens to be one of my favorite players in this draft, but IMO both will go in the 3rd round at least.. I'd take Lee Robinson in the 5th. Nice sleeper and might be tried at OLB as well. And again, Bradley Fletcher will be long gone in the 7th round. He's shooting up draft boards it seems. Victor Butler should also be gone. He could become a great pass-rushing specialist somewhere..
Hartsock was injured very early in the season and was out for the year, not to mention that in general as an OC Mularkey never uses TEs in the passing game. As I said before, if we could get a late rounder as well that would be great but I think that would nix any sort of deal. We still get the player we want in the 1st, and add one of the best blocking TEs in the NFL. Basically we get a free blocking TE without wasting a draft choice. On value it looks uneven, but needs-wise it makes a lot of sense and would surely go through.
If you're thinking trade down scenarios, try a couple of these: The Bucs' at #19 want to leapfrog the Broncos and be sure the Jets don't grab Josh Freeman. We would probably get something like a 4th round pick to move back a couple spots. The Eagles may want to trade up with either their #21 or #28 to move up and grab an offensive tackle like Michael Oher or Andre Smith from Detroit. We could get something in the area of a 3rd or 4th... If the Pats have a target in the 1st round, they definitely have the ammo to move up with a 1st, three 2nds and a 3rd... But I don't see the Falcons personally and especially not for Ben Hartstock..
In the IMD I participated in on a different site as the Jets GM I traded down with the Eagles and picked up an extra 3rd. I know all of those scenarios make sense, but I don't know if they would happen. I'd rather trade down for sub-value if we are going to get the same person at #24 that we'd get at #17 for a cheaper contract and we fill an urgent need at the same time without using a draft pick. The only trade that I think would be both feasible and beneficial would be a swap with the Bucs and we get Jerramy Stevens (6'7, 260 lbs TE who is not nearly as good a blocker as Hartsock, but is better than anything we have.) They have Winslow now and Alex Smith, they've got no need for Stevens. If we could add on a late rounder to that too, then that would be great.
^ stevens is a douche and he is way overrated. Not on this team... others however, i'd deal him to and pick up a 5th that I'd use as apart of other trades.
Well we are risking quite a bit by not getting any form of value in return for the trade down. With our guy sitting there at 17, unless you get solid value trading back and hoping he is still there, or that no one trades in front of us to prevent us getting our man. its not worth the risk for essentially a 6th round pick. the GM its a horrible trade for the Jets no matter how you try and spin it.
I bump this thread because the Jets have signed Ben Hartsock for no draftpicks because he was cut by the Falcons during the preseason, showing how little value he had on the trade market. The trade down, in hindsight, is now a downright fucking terrible idea.
Bring up this thread form the dead.....isn't very complimentary to GM. This proved that Hartsock had little value. A good blocking TE that will pave the way for our 3 headed monster. Hartsock is super slow and not much of a receiving threat. Happy that we got more beef up front.
Looking back, the thread shows a whole bunch of people proven wrong. Smith was drafted 61. So yea, he would have been there. The Blocking TE's, no matter how good they may seem, have low value. It would seems the Falcons had very low views on Ben after this summer. He was not even close to worth the drop of 7 palces. In his draft, he was way off. Smith would have been there, but Gilbert was way over drafted. His 3rd of Robiskie was takenearly in the second, and his 4th rounder was also a second round pick. It just goes to show ,know matter how much one proclaims to know, the NFL draft is always full of supprises.
Even so called experts..Kiper, McShay...etc are wrong more than right. Nobody knows exactly when a player will be drafted. I can tell you from a standpoint of Size/Speed, Athletic Ability and Upside......Sean Smith should have been drafted in Rd 1. Playing for Utah vs a SEC team hurt his stock...which is a shame. I believe the Dolphins got themselves a great player that was impressive in pre-season till he took ill. The Jets will see first hand how good of a career Sean Smith will have. As far as Jarron Gilbert......I was never sold he was a Rd 1 player...too many people got caught up in the hype. Gilbert will be a fine D-Lineman, I know Chicago is thrilled with his progress...but not worth a Rd 1 selection.
Even people that know a ton about the draft are wrong often. The difference is that they tend to be right a lot more often than the average joe, and they can at leastdefend why they think certain things.
completely agree, perhaps the best part of predicting the draft is the fact that your probably going to be wrong most of the time
Oh there is no doubt. I never though Gilbert would have fallen past the second round. Just pointing out that even some of the best draft guru's among us are often wrong. I, for one, think Smith will end up as a very good safty for the Phins, and that sucks. Oh well.
Rec Yds Avg Lng TD 83 867 10.4 27 6 Wow, I guess Mularkey really does not use TE's at all. I mean look how shitty Gonzo's production was this year. lawls.
