Ok, won't be a long post...but damnnnnnnn...the New York Jets have been one of the least penalized teams over the last 5-10 years. What, do we intend to undo that in one year. I can't remember the team having this many penalties in a game. I know it's pre-season...but geeezzz...most of the penalties were on the first teamers...guys with experience. This cannot continue. You can't play one of the better teams in football and have of 100 yards of penalties. Rediculous!

Get those refs out at practice and pay them MORE or something!

    Peace

Im hoping its just the change from a well-disciplined team to a more aggressive nature of what Rex wants. I would expect with his attitude our penalty count will go up, but not this much. This could cost us a game or 2.

I like that our guys came out with a lot of intensity. Manning was trying to throw them off by changing up his count and he was successful. What we need to work on is the PI calls and false starts.

Hahah... they are just trying to be Anti-Mangini, and or Anti-Herm... both of whom were noted for having low penalty teams.... wouldn't we rather rack up scores of penalties if it means we're the opposite of "them"??? Won't it mean we're guaranteed to go to a Super Bowl finally!?? :drunk:

It's preseason... getting the kinks out is what you do with your systems this time of year. I wouldn't read too much into it quite yet.

I'm just glad that the issue came up before the games began... this needs to be addressed ASAP.

By the way, I wouldn't take back the Jenkins or Gholston penalties... both were great.

I think the amount of penalties was BY FAR the most shocking thing to me this preseason. One of the reasons is probably because Ryan preaches a more aggressive, violent defense vs Mangina's laid back read and react approach. I'm ok with that outside of Lito's lazy penalties. On the other hand the full starts and Sanchez's 98 delay of game penalties, there are ZERO excuses for that. We must get mentally sharper and on point. We have a weak offense that can't afford having positive plays turn into negatives because we probably won't be able to overcome those issues.

i'd rather have our defense go out and kick ass all over the field. a few penalties is a small price to pay NOT to have a cover zero defense. lito better work on his coverage or be replaced by somebody else. the buddy ryan defense was inspired by buddy watching joe willie while he was a jets coach. basically, it is based on the fact that a qb can't hurt you if he throws from a prone position.

I read this interesting stat study about how certain perceptions about what causes you to win or lose are oftentimes not true. It gave examples of what statistics show on some commonly accepted things such as penalties cause you to lose. Anyway, in the study that this guy did, he found that the average record of the highest penalized teams in the NFL didn't really mean anything about their records at the end of the season.

One thing that he did find was that if you lead by the end of the 1st quarter, you win 75% of the time... very interesting.

Yes it's preseason but I think what the OP was getting at was that these are the types of mental mistakes that carry over into meaningful games because guys get comfortable given the lack of discipline by the coaching staff. That being said I've been expecting more penalties this year given Ryan's in your face aggressive approach. It's bound to happen... teams take on the persona of their coach and no doubt this team will have a Rex Ryan stamp on it. Whether that is a good bad thing remains to be seen.

There were a couple bad calls, but most of the penalties called on us were blatant fouls. This is something that can be fixed fairly easily though, so hopefully it's taken care of. I'm not going to worry about it till it becomes a problem in the regular season.
