Drafting so your division rival can't get a player is a bad strategy. The Eagles draft VERY well on defense with the exception of Jerome McDougle. Ernie Accorsi said the Giants were interested in JM, the Eagles took him, and look how that worked out.
thats a cop out. You do not select a guy at #6 overall if you arent confident that he will become a full time starter for you, you also must be positive that he will a big time player.
I'm willing to hold my opinions on Gholston until after this season. I'd rather see what a REAL defensive coach can get out of him As far as Sanchez, it's more his intangables that impress me then the obvious deep pass caught by Clowney. I mean even blind squirrels find a nut every now and then. If you look at how he keeps his composure and how he stands in the pocket, he seems to have what it takes to succeed. The jury's still out on weather thats going to be the case.
per roto: According to the National Football Post, at least one Jets executive says Vernon Gholston has looked ineffective all camp. "He has no instincts," Mike Lombardi adds. Gholston had a pressure against St. Louis in the Jets' preseason opener, but was otherwise quiet. The '08 No. 6 pick is getting outplayed by Kenwin Cummings and Brandon Renkhart.
again , per roto: first Jets quarterback to take a snap at Sunday's practice. Sanchez is setup to get the official nod from Rex Ryan very soon. He took most of the reps in 9-on-7 drills Sunday after showing ideal arm strength, long-ball accuracy, and composure on an 88-yard TD drive in Friday's exhibition. Source: New York Daily News nothing surprising, just getting out in the publicity.
every player in the NFL is a risk from your point of view, which is true to a point. there are players that obviously are going to contribute, and on rare occasion, look like hall of famers. the mcfadden situation and his lack of production can be traced to a crappy o-line...did adrian peterson look like a risk to you as well? what does it say about gholston when a cruddy head coach will not even play you, and gholston only had one thing to do coming in...rush the passer. bryan thomas was drafted by edwards and his staff to be a 4-3 end..not a 3-4 hybrid like gholston. gholston was a reach and a risk our previous staff screwed up on, whether you want to admit it or not. i'm all for it if he turns into something better than our other over priced olb hybrid who is out of position and over paid. but at this point ghost is being out played by undrafted free agents, in year two i might add, how many other top ten picks in the history of the NFL can say that? that should prove to you something.........there is a big difference between bust and under achiever.
Tough to say and hold it against him year 1 as he was working with a coach who's heart wasn't even in the NFL but rather Anderson's old team(Arkansas) and that Petrino eventually just quit on his team. He did shows signs of life under Mike Smith who has been known as a good Def. Coordinator back in JAX.
You cant hold the money factor against someone though who is coming out of the draft. Its a screwed up system that was set in stone long before Gholston arrived into the NFL. Had Vernon been a FA from another team and was joining the Jets, absolutely would agree with the point you made but again the man was raw coming out of college and that you are drafting someone like Gholston based upon potential rather than immediate impact(Like the case for most QBs outside of the rare 2008 cases for Ryan and Flacco).
There's a big difference between Gholston and Dewayne. One has a strong work ethic and has a desire to get better in this league and to earn his money while another one was a fat slob who settled for whatever he could and did not have the desire to get better as the league evolved. Gholston has also been playing DE for a majority of his college career, NOT OLB unlike Robertson who was a DT in Kentucky and stood as one as a Jet(Except when getting some talks of being a DE).
robertson was not a prototypical nose in the 3-4. he did have more success in the 4-3 as a one gap DT, than gholston has had up to this point. i will say one thing about our ghost...he has had the least amount on the field than any other "Bust" in the history of pro football...i still have hopes of him coming out of this crappy label.
How can a guy who started 95% of all games he played w/ a team that drafted him...and was never a liability on the field be the mother of all busts? I mean Tony Mandarich, Ryan Leaf, Blair Thomas, and Steve Emtman are busts. They rarely even PLAYED for their respective teams and set their given franchise(s) back for a number of years. I would LOVE an explanation from all the D rob haters on here who constantly nail him into the ground to PLEASE explain to me how he's this groundbreaking disaster of a bust. why He's defininately a DISSAPOINTMENT...but why do Jet fans have to turn every player that doesn't work out into this epic failure of human life. The guy did some good things for this franchise. Not enough...but he wasn't a complete disaster. Sorry guys...not every player that doesnt pan out after taking gamble can be a sportscenter special. W/ that said, Why can't people realize that this is what the NFL draft is all about? It's a god damn crap shoot. You're trying to evaluate current talent, w/ long term potential while factoring in short term/long term need AND cost. It doesn't always work out. For every Darrelle Revis and Dustin Keller, there's a Roger Vick. For every Tom Brady and Jerrod Mayo there's a Adrian Klemm or Daniel Graham! Realize that certain players need time to develop. You wanna whine about the salary...fine...but there are 31 other teams in the same dilemna w/ early draft picks. Continuing to nail Gholston into the ground w/ anything more than mild concern, is laughingstock worthy. Than again....people did this same bullshit w/ Ferguson 2-3 years ago.
Supposibly is one of my favorite "words" in the English "language". It's right up there with "should of". So, the Pats are successful in the draft because the Jets have taken a few busts in the first round (understatement)? Aren't there 30 other teams out there drafting as well? It's a good thing they can count on us to "take out the trash" and leave behind that gold mine player. I mean, imagine if we hadn't taken Dewayne Robertson. He TOTALLY would have slid 9 spots to the Pats at 13 and they'd have been forced to take him over Ty Warren. Phew! It's a good thing we did what no other team would have and took the garbage out. As far as Gholston is concerned, it's too early to call him a bust, but there's no reason to make excuses for his progress, either. He's been terrible, and circumstances can't excuse that. I'm hoping for a step forward, anything really, this season. There's no reason to do anything BUT hope for progress. Now that they've advanced even more of his salary, we'll likely be unable to cut him for the life of his contract. His draft pick looks absolutely foolish, but we have to make the best of it until he demonstrates a glimmer of understanding of the pro game.
In general I also like the wait-and-see approach, but there are some Gholston defenders out there who are being kind of condescending. It's like, "If you're bashing Gholston, you don't know anything about the NFL, you're a cry baby, you only care about stats, you want every draft pick to be sensational, you're impossible to please," etc. And if we were getting all our Gholston news from the papers, I could understand this attitude, and I would stress patience as well. But guys, we get to see him play with our own eyes. I mean, weren't you watching? I just can't believe that people watched him the other night and thought he looked like he might turn into a player. Maybe I'm going insane, but to me he looked about as awful a player as I've ever seen. I'm not kidding. This is way beyond "coaching up." Imo, he is just irredeemably dreadful. My last words on the matter: I like to think I'm a reasonable, realistic person who is objective and careful in my assessments. I am a huge Jets fan and want the best for them in every way. I do not dislike VG as a person. I'm sure he's a fine kid. I am also a big Tannenbaum supporter, but he really, REALLY botched this one. Yikes. over and out
I agree that it was one series and we shouldn't go overboard but putting #s aside he looked comfortable and looked like an NFL QB on that drive. he wasn't intimidated facing an NFL D or starting in the shadow of his goalline. he commanded the O, he threw nice passes and although the offesne was dumbed down for him he did make good, quick decisions. I love what I saw but it's still way too early to make any real judgment.
The only thing I will say about Sanchez is that in limited action, his passes looked accurate, that sideline throw on the first play to Clowney was perfectly placed. That is a good start. That is all it is, a good start, it is better then him completely falling on his face.
I re-watched that game twice and Gholston's play was pathetic. 'It's gonna take time with this guy'. Spare me, Kurt, your constant apologies for this guy's weak and inconsistent play is what is what is absolutely ridiculous. He plays with zero heart. Every time he was on the field I watched him, watched him get shoved back by second string guards and tackles, watched him over-pursue, he showed zero moves and less aggression. No way do I want this bum starting as our pass-rusher. I don't care how he does in practice, if he can't do it against depth players on another team's offense, he's useless.
