I have read multiple articles the last day or so telling me we should not trade T Jones because Shonn Greene is a rookie and Leon Washington is NOT an every down back. I beg to differ on the 2nd point. A couple of points: 1. Most teams split carries with two or three backs - This is the trend in the NFL 2. He has proven to be durable 3. In his rookie year he was our leading rusher, carrying the ball 20+ times twice (both 100 yd games) and 15+ three more times. 4. When he has carried the ball, he shows a willingness to pound it inside (unlike Reggie Bush) 5. He's listed at 195lbs and I know they rarely change guys weights but in looking at him at camp he looks bigger especially in the legs. 6. Didn't they say the same thing about Tiki Barber, Brian Westbrook, Warrick Dunn, etc. How big our they? I think you are selling this guy short if you don't think he can carry the load. Just my $.02
like you said, 2 or 3 backs is the trend. TJ just came off a great season. I mentioned this in the other thread, no other back has shown that they can take the majority of carries and do as well as TJ did. I wouldn't mind trading Tj this year, I'm expecting around a 7-9 season. If it's for a legitimate mid rounder or roster play im all for it. PS. westbrook is the farthest thing from durable.
I am against trading Jones not because I don't think Washington can handle an increased load, but because I don't know if Greene can be an adequate complement to him.
Agreed. I would love for both of them to slap me in the face and prove me wrong, but until that happens, I will support TJ being the starter.
These predictions of a losing season make my stomach turn. I understand that we're going into this seaon with a lot of question marks, but geez, we haven't even started the preseason yet! Let's hold off on the negativity until there's something to be negative about. As far as LW taking over the majority of the load - I don't doubt that he could do it - the guy hasn't given any reason to make anyone believe he can't, but I'd be even happier seeing him in tandem with TJ (along with Greene as a change of pace assuming he's ready to get in there) then to see all of the weight put on Leon alone (though I do want to see him get a lot more touches this season). The guy is an outright playmaker - nobody here has a right to say that he can't carry the load until he at least gets a shot at it.
that's fair, but there's a difference between this and people saying TJ is expendable because of it. people saying that are being really naive.
All are valid points. I would lov to tie up Leon for around the 4.5 of the Jets latest offer. I don;t think he deserves MJD type money at this point. Drew got his contract because he is not part of a back rotation, there is not on other proven NFL back currently on the Jags roster. If Leon plays out his deal and has a huge season by all means he may prove to be owrth the money, but I'm a bit reserved about 6 mill for a guy who's best season is 650 yards on the ground.
I hear you. I'm not in the "TJ is expendable" camp whatsoever. The guy had an awesome season in 08 and it's silly to want him gone just because there's some controversy over the contract numbers. However, I do think that Leon's play over the past few seasons warrants a bigger role in the offense than he's had previously. By no means do I want TJ gone - on the contrary - we are a much stronger unit with him here. I just want the ball in Leon's hands more often this season, TJ or not.
I totally agree. I advocated moving Jones all off season because he's due a big bonus in March 2010--He'll play for the jets this year and get released in Feb and we'll get squat for him. Why not move him now and play Leon, Greene, and Danny W.? We could always use the draft picks and who need 4 rbs? Just my opinion?
I was thinking of starting a similar thread. I hate that these reporters take it as a given that Leon can't handle being a feature back because of his size. That Barry Sanders guy was pretty small if I remember correctly, and he did pretty well. I'm not advocating trading TJ, I just hate the presumption that Leon can't handle the load. PS: Hey, am I the only one suddenly getting pop-up ads on this site????
This is a reasonable argument. The flip-side, however, is that TJ is essentially playing for a contract from someone else for next year which should elevate his motivation to have a great year.
I can see both sides to trading T Jones or not trading him. The point of this thread is I think Leon would surprise if given the chance. The guy is a flat out stud.
6. Didn't they say the same thing about Tiki Barber, Brian Westbrook, Warrick Dunn, etc. How big our they? I laugh at this!!! In no way shape of form is he better then any of those backs not saying compared them to be better but Jones has no hands coming out of the back field and when those guys get the ball in there hands they got juke moves which TJ has none he is a straight North and South runner and when he gets hit he hits the floor.. being that big he should be running guys over.. Im not saying trade him at all he is just not a all purpose back like those guys..
Barry Sanders was a gifted back one you see rarely as the years go by.. Plus did you see the size of Barry Sanders Tree Trunk Legs? Leon is good but no barry sanders... if Sanders Still played past 10 years he would hold all the records not Emmit
What's even scarier is that Barry Sanders already has a kid old enough to be a star RB in HS. Barry Sanders Jr. was only a frosh in HS this past year and lead his team in OK to a state title. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wP4SVVTCKT4 His name alone would've gotten him schollies anywhere. Add in his natural ability and the sky's the limit for this kid.
Barry Sanders was probably the best football player I ever saw. The man was on another planet. That was a nice run by his son there, but I doubt he ever becomes half the athlete his father was.
No doubt. Sanders was definitely the best RB I ever saw having never seen Jim Brown. There's so many HS phenoms these days that are can't misses and never pan out so I definitely don't think he'll be his dad. Moreso my point was just how quick time flies and I can't believe he's already been out of the league so long that we'll see his son playing big time college ball in 3 years.
