This is so retarded! If they were going to suspend him why didn't they just do it last year!!! I hate the commissioner!! He just does what ever he feels like.
Yup, I figured you were still bitter that Ellis took that contract after Abraham turned it down. You are still expecting Ellis to rack up a bunch of sacks as 3-4 DE? He isn't, and WSW and the others are right, you don't have realistic expectations from a player with 3-4 DE responsibilities. Ellis is not a game breaker, but he is far above average when it comes to 3-4 DEs, you just don't want to accept it because you, like a lot of fans, carry a grudge against a Jets player. It boggles the mind.
As far as the suspension goes, I had figured Mangini was going to give him a 1-game suspension last season after it happened, a la the Steelers who did it to Santonio Holmes. But we see how far Eric's hard-nosed resolve goes. He was already in 'save-my-job' mode by that point and was probably too scared to suspend a player like Ellis at that point in the season. From my understanding of the rule, this wasn't supposed to be a league suspension because3 this was Ellis' first offense. But since it was a cop that pulled him over and busted him for weed instead of him just popping positive on a league piss test, I guess Goodell's taking liberties here... sucks.
Goodell set the precedent with Kevin Faulk. He got caught with a joint in his pocket at a concert, and even though he tested negative for marijuana a couple of days later, he got the 1 game. It was his first offense also. I think suspending a player for one very minor infraction is silly, but that seems to be the way it's gonna be....
It's funny, Ellis probably got a fine similar to a traffic infraction for possession - same with Faulk - but you don't see anyone getting suspended for unpaid traffic tickets.
08/09 — There is talk about DE Shaun Ellis receiving a suspension from the NFL for the season opener at Houston resulting from his November arrest in Florham Park, N.J. But neither Ellis nor Rex Ryan has gotten the official word on this. “I plan on Shaun being there for the first game,” head coach Rex Ryan said at his news conference today. “Until they flat tell me he’s not playing in this game, we’re going business as usual.” “No, not really,” Ellis said when asked if he’d heard anything official about a suspension. “It’s a league decision. It’s something I’ve got to go through.” But putting the possible suspension and LB Calvin Pace’s four-game penalty aside, Ryan made a strong statement about how any individual absences will impact on the Jets’ defense as a unit: Not at all. “It’s that decal on the side of the helmet,” Rex said. “If we’ve got some guys down, we still expect you to play your tail off. “Last year in Baltimore we had more injuries and lost more games by starters than any other team in the NFL. Yet it’s the unit that carries the mantle, it’s not just the individual. Our defense is built on being able to overcome injuries or whatever. If we lose an individual for a game or four games, whatever that case may be, we’re going to be just fine because it’s that pride in that unit, knowing that these guys trust each other to hold it down. "We always have a motto that it’s the backup’s job to come in and play at that same level or even a little better. We believe we can get that done. We’ve done it throughout the years. We did it last year in Baltimore. We were pretty decent on defense." Here's how decent: The '08 Ravens were second in the NFL in overall defensive yardage allowed, third vs. the run, second vs. the pass and third in points allowed. newyorkjets.com
This sucks! I totally forgot about him getting bustedIhope they can pull it together for week one missing Ellis.
Well we were 9-7 and have significantly improved. They have question marks on their D - two rooks look to be starting in the box. I have to believe that our OL will eat them and the big three will pound the rock all day. Mario Vs. Brick should be great to watch. I am confident in our secondary and their ability to limit Chaub and Andre J - which means Slaton is going to have to beat us on his own, I dont think he can.
One-game suspension is now official. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/12077433 The combined records of the opponents in the Jets' first 5 games is 51-29. Between Ellis, Pace, and the QB situation, the Jets should be pleased if they're 2-3 at the end of them.
Don't know about JWWS's history, but it does seem like much of the complaints about Ellis seem to expect more sacks from a 3-4 DE. Which is disturbing. Also as someone else noted a big part of the problem here is lack of depth behind Ellis. Of course that's true of a number of positions on this team. Me, I've always liked Ellis.
He pretty much went on a shitstorm tirade when we traded John Abraham, and took it out on Ellis... who basically took the contract after Abe turned it down. So now he tries to find anything possibly wrong with Ellis' game and bashes it like a pinata.
Fans have players they like and don't like. I happened to like Abraham as a player. I think that Abraham was a valuable playmaker and a game changer that a defense needs to be effective. Ellis, in my opinion was average to above average. After sitting at games and watching Abraham take on double and triple teams and still get sacks, pressures, turnovers, and draw holding penalties, I thought he might be a guy worth keeping. Ellis, on the other hand, was always facing one defender. When Abe remained healthy in 2005 and got 10.5 sacks for a bad team, I thought he earned his keep. Ellis, on the other hand, took the big money in 2004 and then mailed it in. Playing 4-3 end in 2005, he was invisible, had 2.5 sacks and quit playing with a minor injury after 13 games. I found it ironic that that guy that was criticized for not being tough toughed it out with a bad team and performed, while the tough guy who was a "rock" played half ass football and quit. Abraham had as many sacks last year as Ellis has had since he signed the big contract (I know - he's a 3-4 end). 3-4 end or not, I would rather have the play maker than the guy who just does his job (barely). I don't think Ellis will even be a Jet next year. He simply has not earned his money, and he has been one of the top paid DEs in the game. What's more ironic is that Abe was the one who supposedly had off the field problems and now Ellis is one suspended. And by the way, the Jet defense has sucked ever since Abraham left and the pass rush has been non-existent. I know the Jets got Mangold with the pick, but the Jets are still trying to replace Abraham after three years with Gholston being the latest attempt. As for you Abyzmul, I guess your opinions are just always right. I guess the Jet players you like all deserve Pro-Bowl appearances and those you don't should get cut and you are on the money every time. And God forbid someone expresses an opinion that you may not agree with on a discussion board.
Goodell is a douchecanoe on a powertrip. I'm sure I'm just rehashing what's already been said, but Ellis should have been suspended when it happened, not the following season. And $100,000? Plus $10,000 for throwing snow? And add to that, Smith getting suspended and fined a huge chunk of his salary because Rhodes bodychecked Boldin into his face and knocked him unconscious? Goodell needs a fucking reality check. I do think it's amusing how the article describes the snow-throwing incident though. Thank the good Lord Jesus no one was injured when he tossed that snow into the bleachers.
