I really don't see any negatives about bringing in a kid like Jones. All he did was some blow a couple times. I'm not advocating that, but it's not like his is gonna be a PR mess like some of the other options out there. (Plax going to jail, Harrison being sued for a shooting, Vick, though not a receiver) He was just starting to come into his own as a receiver, he is a huge frame and can fly down field. He could really help out our young qbs and add some depth. At worst if he is a locker room nightmare or sucks just cut him.
example negatives: 1) Jones goes out w/team mates after big win before bye week. Everyone gets pretty liquored up and he happens to score some coke. Jones offers coke to team mate who being drunk accepts and they both get caught by undercover cop blowing lines off the toilet in the bathroom. Jones and team mate go to jail and get suspended. 2) #1 happens w/o the cop/arrest and team mate(s) begin using coke.
Reality: 1) If any Jets do coke, which I'm sure some do, then they haven't gotten caught and can probably teach Matt a thing or 2. 2) See #1 3) So you can't really think of any negatives to signing him?
The guy has tons of potential. Unfortunately, he doesn't have anything else..and that includes a history of production and a proven track record of staying clean. He'd be yet another piece that we'd have to hope would fall into place.
Jones would just add another guys who is Maybe a #2 for us. Signing him would jsut show that we are tryign to throw as much shit on the wall as possible and see what sticks. It really would not fix anything.
^how is that any different from our current approach. The more shit you throw, the better chance some it will stick.
Ehh, don't you think all NFL players (including Jets players) are around coke and other drugs frequently? I'm sure they are; I doubt they'd be that susceptible to Matt Jones' peer-pressure. Besides, if they wanted to do it, they could easily obtain it -- they don't need Jones for it unless they're really Jonesin for it. heh heh heh.
Money Sex and Drugs go hand in hand The more money there is, The more drugs are around, and you know when there is both of those around, sex isn't too far away If he was more productive, then I wouldn't have a problem, but being that he never was, I would take a pass.
GriffDog, on paper his talent may raise an eyebrow although at the same time, I wonder: does Jones' alleged "40" speed really include the versatile 'route' WR runner package as well?...Yes, I get the need for a verticle threat besides Twitter-Clowney but at the same time roster spots are a very prized commodity with this talent-lean WR group. And at the same time, what about during for example an off-week? ... can we count on his judgement not to back slide should he be involved in a 'casual' setting; letting his guard down with a beer-or-two during, again, an off-week? ....which might lead to what?.....what of his "vigilance?" Nobody wakes up one morning saying to himself: TOMORROW I plan on getting busted by Roger Goodell for my moment-of-weakness LAST NIGHT." Matt Jones can say that it was just "one night" of bad judgment during his SOBER press conferences but will NFL-levied suspensions involving a repeat offender constitute just "one night?" I'm psyched for camp to start and all and I wanna say "yes!" and drill-for-oil regarding any prospect with talent, but the risk factor has to be considered as well. I don't want a problem child throwing a monkey wrench into the works ... especially should we get off to an unexpectantly good start such as '08's 8-3 which will probably not be the case, but I hope you get my "big picture" drift..thx.. We have depth issues at a number of places. Can we afford Jones to back-slide in a "moment" so as to end up getting tweaked by the league and leaving the Jets with one less available WR roster spot? Though I like his "red zone/jump ball" potential....right now I'm not sure. I just dunno....
true, but do we really need to take a chance on a guy like Jones. He has shown little as an NFL receiver and has problems staying out of trouble. I'd rather see what we have in Stucky and Clowny
fyi....Jones had a real nice year last year. He is clearly not a true #1 but neither is Cotchery. In fact Stuckey is not a #2 and Smith is not a #3. With the current depth chart all these guys are being "stretched" to roles where they may not be capable. If you sign a guy like Jones, Cotchery is like #1a, Stuckey goes back to #3 and Smith back to #4. I don't like bad guys with baggage but I'm intrigued by this.
Who do we have that has proven anything close to what Matt Jones did last season? Chansi Stuckey has a high ceiling, but he is a slot receiver, not an outside man. We need someone to line up on the outside and that person, I hope, is not on the roster right now. I'd rather Matt Jones over Brad Smith. And for those of you who still think David Clowney is the man because he can run a straight line faster than the guys who were cut and now deliever my mail, lets see him do it in real action, real games, consistently, before we consider him for a starting role.
Sure it's taking a chance, but that chance is simply whether or not the dude will fly right and catch some balls. It's not like he endangered the lives of other people or himself or dogs by his actions. I really don't see him as a headcase, a locker room cancer, or bad publicity (for the most part). Worst case scenarios are either he sux or he gets caught doing stupid shit again. Either way, we cut our losses and move on. I really don't see a downside. In the games he has played, he has made some noise, so its not like he sux either. His 761 yards and 2 TDs over 12 games (with a JAGfor a QB I might add) projects to better Coles's 851 yards and at least equal 7 TDs (with 12 games of HOF QBing) production from last year, who he would be ostensibly replacing. If we can sign him for cheap, no reason not to throw him into the TC mix and see if he "sticks".
65 rec. 761yds 11.7 avg. 2 TD's. Ok so not as good as I thought but he was the leading receiver for Jax and it's not that bad. I don't think he has been able to use his speed very well....more of a possesion receiver.
Man, I wish I had those guys delivering my mail, the clueless Cuban lady who talks on her bluetooth all day that I got now is lucky to get it here before 5.
Are you seriously saying that this thread is now about No.2 instead of Matt Jones? Your post is a steaming pile of innuendo. I was simply pointing out that Matt Jones is just as likely to shit the bed as he is to add an explosive element to our offense.
