It made no sense to use Mo last night. None at all unless there was nobody else available. He is no spring chicken. I'll throw a third reason out although this is really reaching. They say Hughes also has an inning limit this year and you would assume it is higher than Chamberlains because he has been around longer. Maybe it isn't. On another note I can't wait to see the Watson double standard kich in once again. Garza admits hitting Teixiera on purpose and probably will get nothing near what Burnette got for throwing behind somebody.
Or maybe you want to keep your closer in good shape. You can't stay in top form sitting on the bench for 3 or 4 or 5 days at a time. You're delusional Donald.
I think using Hughes in the 9th wouldve been a better option than Mo. He's basically the set up man and/or the "all else fails" before Mo. Let him get used to closing a game here and there...similar to Flash Gordon did...except more effectively.
Oh, yeah we could get him in the same shape as Papelbon is, right? I'm sure you would love that to happen. That game was 6-0 when they had him start warming up. They brought him in at 6-2 with 4 presumably tough games coming up in Chicago starting tonight. No way should he have been brought in last night when he may be needed a few nights in a row now.
Their stats are virtually identical in IPs and games. I hate when people say they need to rest a Pitcher who has been doing this for years. It is his job. If he did not want to play, Mo would say so.
Here's a less delusional/conspiratorial option: They're planning to stretch Hughes out at the ML level. They'll use him tonight for 2-3 innings.
Sounds pretty conspiratorial to me. Though I'd put more money on them waiting for Mitre's start to give Hughes more innings. The chances are better that Andy goes deeper into the game than Mitre will.
When Mitre pitches they will have no choice. Chicago will be the first decent team he pitches against and I think you will see just how lacking he is.
Huh? I'm pretty sure I haven't been lauding the guy. He's a number 5 starter, what am I supposed to expect from the guy? If he gives me 6 innings of 4-run ball, I'm ecstatic. All he has to do is pitch well enough to keep us in games. I don't need to see him against any particular team to find him lacking. It's hard to disappointed when you don't have ridiculous expectations.
For now, he is. I wouldn't say he's the long-term solution, not if you can get either Kennedy or Wang back in, or get a better option that pushes Hughes and Joba down a notch, but for now, he's fine. If we're in the playoffs, it's CC and Burnett getting two starts per series. Beyond that, you have Pettitte for a couple starts. There's no need to worry about a fourth, much less a fifth pitcher. If any of those guys goes down, we're up the creek without a paddle anyway. There's no reason to get itchy. The Bell move isn't too bad an idea if they don't have to sacrifice a lot. That takes the pressure off both Hughes and Joba. Plus, Bruney would be able to work out whatever his problems are in less meaningful situations.
Here's the latest rumors on Washburn. http://www.fannation.com/si_blogs/m...2444-yankees-look-like-best-shot-for-washburn
Here. About half way down. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9871032/MLB-trade-deadline-buzz:-Thursday's-edition
I wouldn't sell Mitre too short, either, guys. He's not going to blow anyone away, but I think he could be a good #5 pitcher for the long term. Not great. But serviceable.
