Trade TJ for what? This is going to be a run heavy offsense, especially if Sanchez wins the competition. They will need all the backs they can get.
"James closer to joining Saints: According to a report, the Saints are getting close to making a contract offer to free-agent RB Edgerrin James. "We've spent some time evaluating Edgerrin," Saints GM Mickey Loomis said Tuesday on FOXSports.com. "We think he can still play". (Updated 05/19/2009)
Jones really has little to no value on the trade market. I would rather keep him and use him one last year then aquire an extra 5th or 6th rounder. If your offered an early day two pick (3rd or 4th) you have to at least consider it, but I highly doubt Jones is brning that much in.
I agree also. Jones is a good back, not a great back. He is due a $3,000,000 roster bonus next season. He will never see it. If no one offers anything of value, keep him. If someone offers something, trade him. He knows the situation. I believe that is why he was holding out. I suspect that the reason he is back in camp is they promised him if someone offers something for him, they will trade him and he can negotiate a longer deal with them.
I say trade the leading AFC rusher since we drafted his replacement on the 2nd day of the draft and he looks great in shorts, and since we are going to run the ball even more and we know RB's never get hurt , getting a 4th rounder for 2010 would be an excellent move.
So....because TJones led the AFC in rushing last year, doesn't make him expendable? Where was he in 2007? I'm not raggin on TJ....he's a great back.....but the emergence of the oline last year deserves just as much credit to TJ's success as TJ himself. Which also proves the point that he is certainly tradeable....especially if our oline continuity stays intact. Mr.Electric's post earlier in the thread is "bang on".....there's a plehtora of HB's still available.....and I would fully endorse having a back like Deshaun Foster or Deuce McAlister as part of a 3-back "running by committee" approach with Shonn Green & LW. Now having said all that.....I don't want the Jets to give TJones away either.....after his season last year....he should have SOME value (albeit, he's on the wrong side of 30 years of age now)....and Tanny should get something for him, if the Jets decide to go the trade route. If the trade isn't there.....then we keep Jones....which i have no problem with either.
I wrote a piece back in February about the pros and cons of trading Thomas Jones. Back then, it was a very risky proposition moving the AFC's leading rusher with Leon Washington the only other halfback on the roster. But with the addition of Shonn Greene in the draft, the idea of moving Jones makes a lot more sense than ever before. Greene and Washington would compliment each other perfectly as a thunder and lightning combination, with Jehuu Caulcrick or Danny Woodhead getting carries here and there. There are also number of veterans eager for an oppportunity such as Warrick Dunn, Deuce McAllister, and DeShaun Foster. Mike Lombardi of the National Football Post says that "there's talk" that Jones might be made available, especially if the front office is confident enough with Greene. Jones, who will be 31 years old come opening day, is coming off the best year of his career. His value will never be higher, and it's highly likely that this is his last season in green and white considering his contract structure, Greene's presence, and a probably new big contract for Washington. The downside is that with a raw quarterback at the helm, moving the only proven full-time back on the roster is a very risky proposition. Greene and Washington look great on paper, but Washington is a little undersized and has never carried a full load, while Greene is a rookie with one year as a starter under his belt in college. If the Jets want to win now, trading their most proven offensive weapon is counter-intuitive, especially if the Jets plan on being a smash mouth team. Also, while Jones's value may be at its peak, it still isn't that high. He may not net more than a 4th round pick on the open market, considering his age and the surplus of runningbacks in the league. Braylon Edwards could be a possibility down the line, but most of the speculation surrounding him was media-generated. Still, it makes a lot of sense for the Jets to try to move Jones and a draft pick for Edwards. Of course, if he really wants $10 million a year, don't expect him to go anywhere. Mike Tannenbaum has been known to make some big moves, so nothing should be surprising at this point. http://www.jetsdaily.com/ What I wrote back in February --> http://www.jetsdaily.com/2009/02/pros-and-cons-of-trading-thomas-jones.html
The available running backs are all horrible, washed-up has-beens. DeShaun Foster, Rudi Johnson, Deuce McAllister? Those guys can't play anymore. The Jets may as well hang onto Jones, because he's at least slightly better than those unemployable running backs, yet not superior enough to bring anything of value in a trade. And that's the truth.
Pretty much how I feel. If we can get a 3rd, I'd pull the trigger and sign a veteran. For a 4th round pick, I'd be much less inclined. If we were able to give Jones and a 4th or something for Braylon Edwards, I would love it.
Jones is worth more to this team than whatever another team is willing to give us. Barring some Mangini-like brain fart, he stays.
I'll disagree..not with you per se...but with the general feeling from people seeing hightlights of Greene from the draft or in college or even watching his college career and thinking that's what we got. We don't know what we have. He could have the wrong combination of size and speed. Not fast enough..or not big enough....or he can be a guy that can't take the pounding, even if he took it in college. Or he can be a guy that's not cut out to be a professional athelete. Maybe he does something stupid. There are a million things that can go wrong. Now I'm sure some college fan will read this and go......Are you KIDDING? Trust me, I watched him for 3 years and this guy is the goods. That STILL doesn't do anything for me. I gotta see this guy get 20 carries for 80+ yards....and then come back in 7 days for a another 20 carries...and I gotta see him do it all year. Rain, cold, sleet, Ice. I gotta see him take a SHOT from a NFL safety and get up and go back to the huddle. There are a lot of things you gotta see before you go trading away proven commodities. ...unless you can get Edwards. lol
I wouldn't be opposed to this in the least. It actually makes sense for both the Jets and Browns to do this deal. The Sanchez deal at the 2009 draft proved to everyone that Mangini is not opposed to making deals with the Jets. If we're going to get MAX value for TJones...we should get it from the Browns.....provided that Mangini still has a "hard on" for TJ. I don't believe any of the other teams will be interested in TJ (with the possible exception of the Bears)....given that the HB free agent market isn't sagging. Cleveland would most likely be the Jets' best play to get decent value in a trade, IMO.
He's not expandable because we don't have anyone to replace him. He's not a great back, he had a good year in 20008 and is cleary our best full time back and with Leon and the new guy, I think we have a great combination. This will be his last year because of his 3 million bonus in March and he will be waived in the spring, no one will trade for him because they know the Jets are going to cut him. But for tihs year why would you trade your best back for a mid round draft pick him and then look to replace him with a RB someone else let go? Rookie QB, with a rookie RB coached by a rookie HC. I believe Woody spent all this money of FA's the last 2 years to win now.
Everyone is on the trading block, but TJ's not going to bring much in return. His value was probably at its highest three years ago and all that cost us was a move down in the 2nd round of about 25 picks and a fat contract. No team is going to be willing to pay a 31 year old RB what he wants, let alone offer draft picks for him. The only way a trade happens is if he turns into a malcontent/distraction and if that happens it's more likely he gets released. Hopefully, it will be no worse than the situation with Edge and the Cardinals last year. Our running game is going to be a three headed monster. We need the depth and the familiarity that TJ has with the offense. Let Greene ease into the feature back role - assuming he stays healthy and comes as advertised. Then cut TJ next spring and draft another RB is the late/middle rounds to back up Greene.
