http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/jets/2009/05/ugly-day-for-pretty-boy-quarte.html Hey guys, I'm out here at Jets camp for Rich today and got my first glimpse of Mark Sanchez. Unfortunately, it wasn't a pretty day for the pretty boy quarterback. Working mostly with the second team, Sanchez struggled against Rex Ryan's defense which is definitely ahead of the offense at this time. At times, Sanchez was naturally hesitant against the aggressive defense, holding onto the ball too long. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer screamed at him on one play for making the wrong read and missing an open receiver in the red zone for a touchdown. Sanchez was intercepted during a 7-on-7 drill by S Eric Smith at the goal line on a pass intended for TE Dustin Keller. He also had a pass batted down and threw a handful of incompletions. Schottenheimer wasn't the only one in his ear. Defensive players were chirping all day long, shouting things like "still got the training wheels on!" During individual drills, Sanchez looked sharper than Kellen Clemens, gunning several short passes to receivers and showing off his solid footwork. "It was a good day ... for the defense," Sanchez said. "They got after us. It was good though. For a rookie playing against a defense like this, you can't ask for anything better. They are tough, fast, they know exactly what they are doing and they know I'm not quite up to speed yet. It was a tough day but that is what these days are all about." This is only Sanchez's third practice with the veterans. Ryan did point out that Sanchez was impressive during his second practice. *** Clemens, who worked with the first team, settled down as the day progressed. He had one near interception dropped by Darrelle Revis in the end zone. But he did connect on a nice touchdown pass to Brad Smith against the defense. Clemens was seen encouraging Sanchez often and helping the rookie with the offense. DT Kris Jenkins also had a chat with Sanchez for a bit. The best catch of the day went to WR Chansi Stuckey on his twisting, leaping catch on a Clemens' pass during the two-minute drill against the defense. *** Backup QB Erik Ainge was picked twice near the end zone when receivers dropped passes and defenders snatched them for interceptions. Ryan was very disappointed in the dropped passes. *** S Kerry Rhodes was not at practice for personal reasons according to head coach Rex Ryan. Also, Ryan said rookie RB Shonn Greene injured his hamstring during practice and sat out after taking some carries early on. Running backs Thomas Jones and Leon Washington continued to skip voluntary workouts. Jones is expected to show up next week according to Drew Rosenhaus on the agent's Twitter page. "I was reading Twitter the other day," Ryan joked. "I haven't spoken to Thomas but I would like to see him." *** Sanchez also took a lot of heat for his GQ photo shoot from his teammates. Players stuck up pictures of him showing off his body on the beach and called him "David Hasselhoff" for one of his Baywatch-style photos. Sanchez was asked what might just be the best question I've heard in a locker room. Times beat writer Greg Bishop asked Sanchez if there will be a Zoolander-like "walk-off" between the rookie and Kerry Rhodes, the Jets' resident magazine model. "Kerry is good," Sanchez said with a smile. "Bart (Scott) was trying to get that going. I don't know that would be tough, real tough. I would have to get a little pump on (before)." - Ohm Youngmisuk
Not surprised that he is experiencing some growing pains right now, a lot of QB's who have been around in the league for 5-10 years struggle with the looks and defensive schemes that Rex Ryan and Mike Pettine cook up. Nice that he is getting a little bit of a ribbing from some of the guys. Scott sure does sound like he brings some fun to the table.
Is it ever too late to trade anyone to the Redskins, if we hyped any player up enough, I'm sure we could get them to bite, lets try hyping up Bryan Thomas, next thing we know the Skins will be on the phone offering first round picks, left, right and centre.
The kid is now firmly entrenched between Lam Jones and Blair Thomas as an all-time bust! I knew it would end up like this...
this is great!!...Sanchez needs to learn how to bounce back from adversity...and practicing against this defense will help him learn quickly. I want the kid to do well....but this is a learning experience that he needs to go through in order to get better. He needs to take these lumps. Nice to see Clemens doing well and giving Sanchez encouragement at the same time.....class act. thanks for posting this, Mick.
Always knew Sanchez was a bust and Greene was injury prone, haven't heard anything about Slauson either, obviously a practice squad bum.
I also read on one of the blogs that Clemens stayed after practice and went over some plays with Sanchez. A lot of class from a guy who is in full competition against him.
Mark Sanchez Has A Rough Day Posted by Aaron Wilson on May 21, 2009, 5:24 p.m. New York Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez struggled markedly during an Organized Team Activity session today, completing just one of nine passes with one interception during full-team drills, according to Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger. Per the report, Sanchez repeatedly drew criticism from offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer for missing open targets and not reacting well to blitzes. The miscues haven?t discouraged Sanchez, though. ?It was a good day .. for the defense,? Sanchez said. ?They got after it. It was good, though. For a rookie to play against a defense like this, you can?t ask for anything better. ?They?re smart. They?re fast. They know exactly what they?re doing and they know I?m not quite up to speed yet. It was a tough day, but that?s what these days are all about. I learned a lot.? Added Jets coach Rex Ryan: ?We?re kind of throwing him to the wolves.? And inside linebacker Bart Scott delivered a few barbs: ?You still have the training wheels on, Sanchez. ? You?re gonna get somebody killed, Sanchez.? Meanwhile, veteran quarterback Kellen Clemens completed 5 of 13 throws, a percentage affected by several drops. Plus, Sanchez has been getting teased for his recent GQ Magazine pictorial and his photos are pinned up all over the locker room. ?They called me David Hasselhoff,? Sanchez said. ?? The first thing I would say is that it was two months ago. It was one of those things where you?re about to get drafted and you?re going to do a shoot with a supermodel, are you kidding me? ?That?s one of those you have to do. And the guys even told me that I earned it. The Jets know, or they wouldn?t have drafted me, that I?m all about football.? Permalink | Comments Back to Top
