Based on what we saw last year Gholston is probably not a 3-4 linebacker. He's a 4-3 defensive end. He's not comfortable in coverage and he can't handle those responsibilities. He also seems not to have the step to be a rush linebacker from the outside. My guess is that Ryan will figure out pretty quickly that he's not Terrell Suggs and move him back to defensive end.
will they try to add to his frame, getting him to 280? Or just play certain 4-3 schemes to get the most out of him?? i'd just trade Gholston and a 7th for chris long at this point. Long would be a good OLB.
I think they play him as a rotational player, at 4-3 RDE when they are in that front. Once they get him established at that role (if they get him established at that role) then maybe they try a few other things with him to see if he can adapt to them. He never adapted to anything they tried to do with him last year, however they never used him in a role that was remotely familiar so he could get his feet on the ground. Shaun Ellis has a completely different career at this point if Herm and his staff persisted in trying to keep him at 4-3 DT when it was clear he was not making that adjustment. Moving him back to a more familiar position at DE saved the day there. Ryan is going to have to salvage Gholston before he can make use of him in an extended fashion. The best way to do that is to let him play a position that HE knows he can play so he can get his confidence back at this level. Gholston doesn't even know if he can play in the NFL yet. Neither do we. Persisting in making him into a 3-4 ROLB is the thing least likely to change that equation.
Gholston is a 3-3 free range LB. Walk around, find a gap, find the ball, attack. Sort of a 259 lb safety at the LOS. (see Taylor, L...1986..scheme, not talent)
I'd like to agree with you, but Gholston doesn't have that kind of understanding of the game of football to roam. taylor not only had the talent, but had the smarts too, interestingly enough.
He was hurt in preseason. Of course Mandick would not say what the injury was, but I read that it was groin-related. He had surgery during the season. My suspicion is he had one of those sports hernias. When he came back he was not in tip top shape. In essence, a whole year playing hurt, bad first step, no big hits. If he can stay on the field healthy, I have no concerns about him. But he has been hurt before.
Taylor made his mark at UNC as a linebacker and came to the NFL in that role. Gholston definitely does not have that background and there's no reason to believe he's going to be able to make the switch to linebacker in the pros given what we saw last year. Gholston has spent his entire career playing in contact with another player. His game revolves around beating somebody he is in physical proximity to. To expect him to be able to play in space the way a ROLB does in the 3-4 is just unreasonable given that he has not demonstrated any aptitude to do that.
Gholston was the bust of last years draft... he just cant seem to adjust to the speed of the game on the professional level... I really thought he was going to do well but so far no good,.....
Slowston can't change direction fast enough for that to work, just look at how he got outrun by Jay Cutler. On that same play LT would have had a highlight play that would have won the game. A strip sack which he recovered himself for a TD or something like that. Look at Slowston's combine numbers, anything involving a change of direction and he sinks to the bottom of the list. Guy is just a defensive lineman, thats it.
This is what I hated about Manstupid, his secrecy policy turned the fans against the players. Penny played most of the 07 season with an injured ankle, instead of being admired by the fans for gutting it out he was hated for being slow and having a weak arm. Both these issues were related to having only one good ankle to play with.
lol Steelers(Farrior,Foote,Harrison,Woodley) Cowboys(Brooking,James,Spencer,Ware) Bears(Briggs,Urlacher,Hillenmeyer) Titans(Bullock,Thornton,Tulloch) those are >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> and thats just off the top of my head
The answer probably would have been to let Clemens play the season from game 2 onwards and bring back Chad if you had to late after his ankle had had some time to heal. Mangini was worried that if he went with Clemens he'd wind up 4-12 or something like that. Of course going with an injured Chad did the same thing. The Jets coaches since Parcells have been petrified of altering the plan and trying something new when the plan wasn't working. They've had no guts and they've reaped no glory in the process.
if you think Harris is going to be a flop you are a total idiot...we will talk about this once the season is underway...look at his rookie year..he was hurt last year..come on guys
I think we're going to see Thomas and Gholston play on the line a little bit more this year, along with Murrell. It's not going to be a conventional 3-4. The LBs will be lining up all over the place.
Harris has been hurt a lot between Michigan and the Jets now. If he's healthy I agree with you, but that's a coinflip.
I was the one who started it here. I got it from a Letterdude skit where some guy was doing an imitation of Mike Singletary. They did several versions of it late in the season. At least one can be found on YouTube and it was posted several times here.
i would too, only one problem. The Rams took Long over Gholston last year, presumably because they liked Long more. Also since he produced and Gholston was deactivated, i don't think the rams would be interested in, even if it was possible to do with the cap numbers.
