Ok. Kellen knows the system, but Sanchez is a overall better player, very smart and learns quick. If the Jets are 0-3....Sanchez will start. Rex does not fuck around and won't accept losing or let his $70 million man sit on is ass while Kellen is failing.
It would be cool to compete in 2009. I think the Jets will be able to do that. Also, I want Clemens to go into 2009 as the starter, but Ryan coming from the Ravens and seeing what Harbough did with a rookie QB who I believe is not as good as Sanchez, he will likely give him the nod Week 1. You will see.
Also you need to remember that Joe Flacco started for Rex's team last year as a rookie. If that says anything, bank on Sanchez starting week 1.
I'm shocked and disgusted at some of the backlash of this pick wow. We gave up two backups and a starter, a starter who's been RAILED by criticism left and right on this board btw. All of a sudden he's gone and people are crying. Reality: In a weak draft, we got potentially the best player. We essentially gave up a second round pick for a potential FRANCHISE QB. For YEARS, we've ignored our issues at QB thinking oh we can get by with what we have. Guess what, the last two years proved otherwise. It was about time we did something bold in relation to our QB problem. Teams that have sustained success have it due to stability at the QB position. I'll take my chances at that stability with a prospect that analysts, scouts, coaches and GMs have been RAVING about. I wanted Clemens to work out and I am a lil disappointed he's never gonna get a fair shot here but obviously our braintrust thought otherwise. Guess what, they know a little more about the game than we do. If we hadn't made this deal and we sat at 17 and 52, sure we could have gotten a couple good players but people on here would still be clamoring "oh we don't have a QB we're fucked". This was a move that had to be made and I'm glad we made it.
Why would we bank on anything because of that? Flacco started because of Boller's injury and Troy Smith's freak illness.
Point is Rex ran the D....we have a D minded team now....and we can afford to place a rookie behind center. I don't think teams will be scoring many points against us on average and in addition to that our O-line is pretty well off and should protect Sanchez enough.
hmy: Oh no....we don't have a D anymore.....we better trade Sanchez and get Dewayne Robertson back and maybe Justin Miller!!!
I'm not worried about our O line and protection, although we were essentially dead center in sacks allowed. Mark's mobility should help with that. I'm worried about rushing a kid onto the field who didn't have a lot of experience at the college level. I think he'll be great, but I want to be sure he's ready before he sets foot on the field. I think Kellen's perfectly capable of starting this season, and it would be beneficial to give Sanchez a season to learn. QBs are much more likely to bust when they start in their rookie season. Like I said, Matt Ryan was an ideal example of an NFL-ready rookie. Multiple years of starts in a pro-style offense. Mark's got half the equation. Don't expect the team to rush him out there.
Clemens should still start, he's been in the system for a while. And it's in his best interests to play well if he would like to continue his career in the NFl
Not this year, too many missing pieces still, too few draft picks, and a brand new head coach. I think next year if Ryan works out and Sanchez isn't a bust(big if) then we will be extremely competitive with the right draft picks next year.
Good post, this is why I like you.... Sanchez is much more mobile than Clemens taking away a few sacks here and there, I agree, doesn't Sanchez have a more powerful arm for Clowney to get down field and catch those long passes? I love how Sanchez can throw from his BACK foot and still be accurate, that is what impresses me the most about him. Also his ability to throw a screen and his quick release is something I love. I like the fact that Kellen has known Shotty's system his whole career, but, I still need to put Sanchez right there as the starter. You don't have that kind of talent and sit for any length of time. Matt Ryan is a freak, lol. I think he is amazing and will be a great QB for the next dozen years is he stays healthy. Sanchez played for that great USC team, always a good team, real talent. He had time in the pocket, which he will get in NY, decent receivers to catch his throws, which he has in NY and also a great D to keep the other teams points low...which again..he has already.
The Jets have a solid young core and almost all their key veterans are locked up. I see no reason why Clemens shouldn't start the year. I fail to see the urgency of thrusting Sanchez in there if he's not ready. If he shows he's the goods in TC, fine. But there's no use tossing him into the fire for the fuck of it.
I think the people who want him to start, myself included, feel he is ready to lead this team NOW. Kellen hasn't done jack when it comes to leadership and already Sanchez looks more like a leader just on his interviews and a mic being strapped to him in one thread here that I saw. If you start Kellen you are getting a back-up, period. He won't be anything other than that his career. If you start Sanchez, you have a highly coveted player who the Jets were high enough on to make the move that they did. Tanny must have loved his workouts, if not, we'd be sitting here talking Percy Harvin right now.
I don't disagree, but the question is whether he needs seasoning. This could be for several reasons that have nothing to do with Sanchez's career potential or his nature as a leader. I loved David Carr when he came out of Fresno State, but starting that kid from the word go was a bad idea. And personally, I saw him as an excellent leader also. Not to mention he might have been the most physically gifted quarterback I have seen in my short time on Earth. Lots of HOF caliber guys have had to sit, though, for one reason or another. Young, Favre, Brady... Roethlisberger would've sat (and did sit for 2 1/2 games) had Maddox not been injured... Matt Hasselbeck, who granted was far less hyped, probably benefited from backing up Favre in his early days. I say it's safer to sit him unless he really impresses in the moments leading up to the season.
Good points, but, I feel in my heart that if we start him right now he will flourish behind our o-line, with our running game and our speedy receivers. I thought a while ago that Kellen would be decent behind our line...now we have Sanchez...a better player. He should be great behind our line. Compare our line to the line Stafford has in Detroit. I think Stafford will start, but, he will have no protection. I don't care if you are Joe Montana, without a line, you fail. We have a solid line, it will give Sanchez plenty of time, and that alone gives me the feeling that Kellen will be holding the clipboard behind the 3rd QB in his career.
i read a few posts I agree with but here's the deal: forget this year. 2009 is a transitional, not a rebuilding year, from one CS to the next. The new coach has his QB, but his QB has 16 starts. He needs to sit and gain more experience. His growing pains will be arguably more extensive than the average QB due to the lack of experience. Clemens starts, Sanchez sits. This is not a SB year - considering no Rookie takes their team that far... and the Jets don't have a top 3 defense. They can have a top 10, not top 3. There is work to be done... this year is not rebuilding, but transitioning and fortifying. forget 09.
