I can't believe that every time I take a look at this message board this thread is still at the top of the page. Incredible. I guess it just goes to show you how pointless and inexhaustable it is to argue anything on the grounds of religious beliefs. Spirituality is a personal, inward pursuit that is different for every individual. If you choose to adhere to the traditions and customs of a particular religion to guide your spiritual growth, more power to you, but it isn't the traditions or the customs that make your spirituality what it is, it's in the way that you live and treat other human beings. Every organized religion comes down to the same basic principles at it's core, it's only the outward expressions that are different. If people were more concerned with living out the true principles of their faith in their daily lives rather than battling each other over who's ceremonies are more holy or who's interpretations of a text are more accurate, we would have a much saner and more peaceful world to live in. Sadly, it doesn't seem that we're making much progress toward that goal.
19 pages in 39 hours....I would say that it sure stimulated a lot of conversation during a boring off season.
I'm not reading through 19 pages of this but I will say this.... I was raised Catholic but am more a Buddhist than anything else so this would have no effect on me but I have a lot of Jewish friends who are the non practicing type but these two days are very important to them. They take them very serious and I have to be honest I don't really know what they are about but I understand they are very important to them. I agree with the people who say the NFL should fix this, I wonder what the NFL would do if had been the Giants that had been effected by this mistake? There is no reason why the schedule can't be fixed to where both the Jets and Giants would be equally effected by this. We are over 5 months away There has to be a solution considering the Jets and Giants have a few common opponents.
Go read the fucking threads. He's made it QUITE clear on more than one occasion that he believes all Muslims to be "evil". It's not sarcasm, it's not out of context. He's reiterated and stood by those remarks when questioned about it several times. Get your facts straight.
What about Jewish 49er fans? Or Jewish Chiefs fans? The NFL schedule shouldn't revolve around this. Make your schedule as usual, and if some fans CHOOSE not to go to some games because of their religious beliefs too bad for them. No one is forcing them to make that choice, and fans of other teams face the same choice. Changing it for two teams, regardless of the Jewish population in the area is asinine and unfair to Jewish fans in other markets, of which there are undoubtedly many.
The problem is the 49ers didn't request for the NFL to accommodate them based on the high percentage of Jewish people in the surrounding area. The Jets did and the NFL screwed up by giving them 2 home games during the holiest time of the year for a large percentage of it's fan base. I don't think there would have been any issue had the NFL scheduled a home game for the Giants on one of those Sundays.
I'm saying that I disagree with ANY team requesting schedule changes based on religious holidays. Either have everyone play as if it wasn't happening or no one play. To give teams preferential treatment in the matter because they have more fans of a certain religion isn't fair to the fans of other teams that are that religion. Just because another team has more they shouldn't have to take a back seat.
You obviously have a very thin skin and have called several members of this board bigots, anti-Semites but you don't have any sense that you live in a secular society that gives you the right to practice your religion freely. In the context of history this right to practice freely is something special. It means that you and I and every one else is protected by law from that prejudice although sadly it doesn’t eliminate it. This right doesn’t come without responsibility, no personal rights can really be guaranteed without personal responsibility or it will all cave in. Responsibility doesn’t work without personal sacrifice. Freedom to practice your religion is one of the most important rights we have behind speech and a free press. It doesn’t give minorities the right to bitch and complain to the rest of society that the secular nature of our society makes their free practice of there religion difficult sometimes, that’s a given in a multi cultural society. What Koufax did required personal responsibility because he sacrificed his responsibility to his team-mates, fans, league and team management for his right and responsibilities to his faith in a quit dignified way. What the NFL did was give in to a complaining mob for economic reasons. There was no dignity or personal responsibility there was just the right by itself and you wanted it and you got it. Don’t for a minute believe that you didn’t lose something in that complaint regardless of what the rabbi tells you. As we get more comfortable with the concept of rights without personal sacrifice those rights will continue to come under increasing pressure. You really should go back and read Klecko's point. I think he hit on something very important in a very difficult thread. It something we all to often lose sight of.
My view is that the NFL should have no regard for any religious matters when deciding anything. For a league that primarily plays on a Sunday which many Christians would identify as a day of rest and unsuitable for professional sports, why defer to any other religion on an arbitrary basis? They've shown it's not something that concerns them generally, people should recognise and respect that. IMO Jewish people upset at this need to decide what is more important, their faith or football and then act accordingly. If their faith is as important as is being made out surely there isn't even a choice to be made?
And now since the NFL moved it to 1pm & I've got to work until 3pm I miss watching the game. Guess the NFL doesn't care about those of us that have to work on Sundays.
Baruch Atoy Adonoi its finally over. I love 1 pm games but its nice to have a few late games so I can drink more. We now have 7 1pm games and one late game. Oh well, I am going home after the Titan game and eating some pork for dinner. Sinner's unite!!!!!!!!!!!
Revis Flytrap, I hate to disagree with you my friend, but being orthodox does not make him an authority on Judaism. I learned this the hard way in Israel in December when an orthodox caretaker of a synagogue in Sefat went ballistic on my Reform congregation for having the temerity to pray in his synagogue. The views of and within our religion, as you know, are varied, and I do not value orthodox views over my own. Perhaps the orthodox poster is an authority, perhaps not. We have no way of knowing, except that he a has a leg up in our book, being a Jets fan.
