I'm 40 years old and have never seen a cop save a person. They just sort of show up after the trouble and fill out forms.
no, I hope he is on his death bed, hoping for his family to make it to him to see them one last time and say goodbye, and instead they get held up by a dick traffic cop and he dies alone and sad that nobody cared enough to see him off.
Honestly, and I know that I'm going to get strung up for this, I can see both sides here. The officer acted like a dick. As soon as he was told "MY MOTHER IS IN THERE DYING", he should have escorted them into the hospital, confirmed the story, and been done with it. However, I'm also well aware of what prompted his reaction. Appropriate or not, cops everywhere are on edge after what happened in Oakland following a routine traffic stop. The cop had no way of knowing initially that the hospital was their actual destination. As it states, he followed for 20 seconds before they pulled into the lot. Another car might have done the same simply because it was a convenient location to pull over. The first rule in a traffic stop is NEVER GET OUT OF YOUR CAR. As soon as they started piling out of the car, the cop's mind immediately goes into caution mode. He's trying to defuse the situation, and yelling at him sure as hell isn't going to change that. To be perfectly honest, I've seen video of routine traffic stops in which people get tased simply for refusing to remain in the car. So, before he even heard the story, he was already in a defensive mindset. I doubt the story about him pointing the gun at her. Nothing in her behavior indicates a gun in her direction, and certainly not turning and running into the building. Again, the cop should have walked in with them and verified the story before proceeding, but I can see why he was at least on edge. And fuck the race card here. Moats is acting emotionally right now, and understandably so, but I have a seriously hard time believing the situation would have been much different with a white guy behind the wheel. I didn't see anybody get roughed up, tossed in cuffs, or hit with a racial slur.
This is a pure case of gun and badge syndrome. Im sure the cop also suffers from little man syndrome. Moats should have beat his ass down. This clown needs to be fired.
Please follow your own advice and go beat a cop down. Please. Yeah, the guy needs to be fired for continuing a traffic stop with a guy who got out of his car and started yelling. He got exactly what he deserved: reassignment and an investigation.
Exactly. I have my qualms with police officers at times too, but when people make these general comments they are talking about the guys that ran into the WTC too! He might get fired by the sound of the chief.
Please STOP if your looking to argue with me for the sake arguing. This cop is a pure case of cop gone bad. Show the family some respect Mr.Police officer and do the job you are paid for. Allow the family the right to get to a loved one dieing and then enforce the laws.
I'm not arguing for the sake of arguing. I said my piece. He's paid to enforce the law. He did that job. He was also a dick. I disagree with both the idea that Moats should have beaten his ass, which would have landed him in a shitload of trouble AND justified everything the cop did, and the idea that he should have been fired.
I personally have NEVER been involved with, personally witnessed, or had relayed to me a story where the police "saved the day." All I have ever seen them do is fuck things up and fill out forms.
He really had to give him the ticket but I'm sure he could have found a way not to be a complete dickhole about it. Honestly I've had nothing but bad experiences with cops and I've never seen a cop do anything helpful or kind in my life. Every single one, without exception, has been an asshole.
He didn't even really have to give him the ticket, and IMO, he shouldn't have. He should have walked them in at that point, but he was already on the defensive. It was a shit situation, and he's rightfully being punished. Firing? Death bed vengeance? Fuck that. As far as good cops, I had a friend in college who had Culver City PD save her mother from getting beaten to death by her stepfather. I've never been in a situation that dire (although, I've had a gun pulled on me), but I've known and encountered some decent cops and some shit ones, just like any other profession.
Lets go to the videotape................................again http://msn.foxsports.com/video/NFL?vid=3560eb7e-f1e4-44bc-acf8-3e13c9396747&MSNHPHCP>1=39002
Incidents like this, where cops use their power irresponsibly rather than to protect and serve happen WAYYYY more than you hear about. We are only hearing about this incident because it happened to an NFL player. None of us would have heard about this if it happened to an ordinary civilian. Certain jobs should have the highest of standards when it comes to moral character. If a teacher or politician used bad moral judgment they would lose their job. Why shouldn't police officers be held to the same level of accountability?
no, firing is completely appropriate. being able to make sound decisions and use good judgement is part of the job of being a cop. this guy clearly lacks in both areas. his behavior in this situation is the equivalent of a butcher who doesn't know how to cut meat or a web designer who doesn't know html...he is incompetent at his job. just because he is brave enough and willing to do it does not mean he is qualified to. there are more nuances to being a cop than just the ability and willingness to chase bank robbers and subdue them. clearly Moats deserved a ticket, but knowing the situation he was in the cop should have done so quickly if he was going to write it. 14 minutes is simply excessive and only magnifies what the cops interest was from the get go, to exert his authority and level threats against him. I'm not one to champion lawsuits, but there should be one in this matter, simply for the fact that no ticket takes 14 minutes to write. there seems like some sort of civil negligence on the behalf of the police department.
That's all fine and good, but it's still minimal compared to the amount of "un-asshole" things cops due. Outside of regular "protect and serve" duty. Like any time a cop DOESN'T write you a ticket, or when a cop busts you for something, but then lets you go. It's amazing what a good attitude can do for you. Agreed 100%. He belongs off the force.. Hell, if they want to keep him on, put him in corrections.
That's a good point. Kinda reminds me of another beef I have with cops. I've never gotten off the hook and I'm always polite and cooperative. My girlfriend on the other hand has gotten off the hook both times that she was pulled over cause her eyes start to well up and she pulls the puppy dog pouty face, what's up with that shit?
 I actually got off the hook twice, and the third time the cop went easy. I was doing 85 in a 65..a $205 fine. He wrote me up for doing 79 in a 70..a $80 fine.. That's one reason I defend cops. I've had my fair share of run ins with asshole cops. But I've had a lot more good stories. One neighborhood called the cops on my and a buddy of mine for skateboarding. K9 Unit shows up. Cop just asks us to meet him on the other side of the street. We go over. He basically hung out with us for 20 minutes. Showed us his riot gear. Just a cool guy.
