That's what I would do. Looks like there's more out there next year, and if nobody establishes himself as our QB this year we'll likely be in the draft position to get one of them. I hope not, because that's this year plus a few more to sit here and suck, but it could end up that way. I'd rather see if the guys who have been here are ready now than reach for another guy and wait a few more years for him to be ready.
Please explain this one. Do you need to be reminded that we have no respectable QB currently on the roster?
Why would his job be on the line if he drafted a quarterback? If the best player available it a quarterback it would make sense to pick him up.
Detroit, San Fran, Jaguars. Plus a few teams below us that have potential to trade ahead of us. Chicago (Orton aint the answer), Tampa (Raheem prob wants his own guy), Minnesota,
I agree. The good thing about it is I believe Rex will at least have the Defense and the players around him ready to roll. I think it will be a decent situation for a young guy to come into so he can succeed and it might not be as big a learning curve once he does get on the field.
It is widely reported that Detroit is in negotiations with Jason Smith with the #1 pick. I read an article not too long ago that said San Fran was pretty much comitted to Alex Smith for 09' and I'm pretty certain Jaxonville will go WR before they go QB.
If Clemens can't do it this year he never will. Four years in the same offense, some time in games and plenty on the side to watch, this is it. If he's not getting it done by mid season, assuming he wins the job at all, I'd go to Ratliff.
I completly agree with this statement. Hes had the oppurtunity to learn from one of the best qbs of all time and one of the smartest qbs in the league. If he manages to fuck up he'll be out of the league next season.
You are 100% right, this is a make or break year for Clemens. Either he rises to the occasion or he gets dumped next off season to make room for a new QB (likely from the draft). Part of the problem with getting Cutler is you need to make room on the roster and let one or the younger guys go before they were fully evaluated. Just think of the complaints on this board if the Jets cut Ainge to make room and Ainge becomes the next Dan Marino.
Wasn't Ainge the one who failed the piss test while on the IR last year? Maybe he figured juicing was his only chance of ever touching the field.
It was that way when he got here. He is evaluating the talent we have to see if we do have a respectable Qb on the roster. Not like the ones here were given a chance to play with a good line or team around them. If we do not then he will get one via the draft next year. Would you prefer we give away our draft to trade up to the Lions or take a risk on the latest probable Usc bust in Sanchez? The options are not to bright for drafting a Qb this year and to get Cutler would cost to much and he will still be a rookie in our system and his gunslinger mentality is not what our coach is about. What is your solution to the problem?
I agree. If he does not get it done this year it will be never and I would definitely make the switch to Ratliff. After this year there are no second chances and no excuses.
I would not trade up just to draft Sanchez. My solution is to sit at #17 and if one of the QB's falls to us, pull the trigger. If not, wait until next year. Either way, I am taking a first round QB either this year or next.
If none of the Qb's panned out this year and he did not draft a Qb next year with a better crop coming out his job would be on the line. He has no choice after this year if we don't have a decent Qb on the roster.
If Stafford fell to us I would draft him, I'm not completely sold on Sanchez but I think Stafford is going to be a very, very solid QB
Hopefully we don't have the need to draft a Qb next year but if we do they should take the steps necessary to get the best one in the draft.
The last time the first QB in the draft fell to #17 was 2000 when we took Pennington at #18. I can't think of another time the first QB was drafted out of the top 10, and that was considered a very questionable class. If Stafford falls to 10, you'll see teams trying to trade up to grab him. I expect the Lions to pass on Stafford, but I also expect him taken by 10. Likely before. I wouldn't be surprised to see another team leapfrog us to grab Sanchez. Either way, regardless of who is there, if we don't swing a reasonable trade for Cutler, I'd prefer to head into next season with the QBs we have.
