http://www.kffl.com/hotw/nfl The Lions have just announced they will take jason smith with the first pic of the draft and have started negotiations with Jason Smith. This means a lot for us...and definitely shakes up the draft a little bit. I knew they were not going to take Stafford, and emailed several mock draft websites with my reasons. However, I thought they would draft Eugene Monroe or Aaron Curry. I am happy, because a lot of the mock draft websites wrote me back saying I was absurd...definitely interesting stuff. How do you guys think this will shake things up with the draft? With Stafford sliding down?
not the most reliable source of all time but i'll take it! sweet maybe we get sanchez. also, good move for det imo.
No Culpepper has apparently looked very very good this offseason, losing a ton of weight and getting a lot of his agility and accuracy back. I read some articles claiming that the lions have already named him the starter going into training camp. They also really like Drew Stanton which they drafted last year, or the year before, and have said he has made a lot of progress in developing if Daunte doesn't play well.
I don't think it matters...still plenty of qb needy teams in front of us and teams in worse qb position who could trade up I hope we draft defense
If they really are going with Smith #1 overall, they must be targeting a QB later in the draft. Rhett Bomar might be there in the 3rd, so that could be the pick. The Lions would be smoking to think that both Stafford and Sanchez will be available at 20.
It seems way too early for the Lions to make a decision like that. In any event, USA Today said about 5 hours ago that they are negotiating with all of their potential choices: http://blogs.usatoday.com/thehuddle/2009/03/lions-already-n.html
Look for them to take Freeman at 20 or move up to try and get Sanchez or even Stafford if he falls. This could be another scenario like the Browns 2 years ago, where they got their QB later in the first.
it scares me to think they take sanchez at 15 or 16 by trading up with that 20 pick.... hopefully stafford falls past the Jags and 49ers. that will enable the Jets to have a choice to take a QB with the #17.
Agreed. But I think that it gives us more leverage in trading down, and maybe picking up an extra pick or two in the draft. I think with Sanchez and Stafford sliding down, more teams will try to trade up being its more realistic to grab one of the two elite QB's. I don't think its unusual at all to start contact negotiations early. They did it with Jake Long last year...they do it because if there going to select a guy number one overall, they want to make sure he will not hold out and be in camp. Raiders made that mistake with Jemarcus Russell. it gives them more time.
there is a huge chance either stafford or sanchez will be available at 17... the only real threat is the 49ers who may just take sanchez with the no.10 pick, but i wouldnt be too sure because who would waste 2 very-high first round picks on a QB within several years. But i do think sanchez and stafford will both be great nfl qbs
that's what I've been thinking too. The cap is tied up in QB salaries and they can't afford to add another 1st round QB. It may shape up well for the Jets to have the option to take a QB at 17. I personally hope so.
Hell, and if we don't like Sanchez, we can trade down and let someone else jump ahead of the Lions and get him! Or if Detroit wants him, and he's still available, we can tell them we'll take him unless they want to give us good value to move up.
Detroit will definetly have a top 5 pick next year and will be in position to get a QB as good as any of this year's QBs. If I was in charge of the Lions I would spend this draft collecting OLineman so when I draft the QB of the future next year he doesn't end up getting crushed by opposing defenses. Well, actually I would draft Aaron Curry, then collect OLinemen.
