Basically, I've went back and read some of the threads from the end of the season. I was excited to see the incredible amount of support for Brett Ratliff as our starting QB. But then, as fast as the hype emerged, was as fast as it died. Many of the same posters who clamoured for Ratliff, are the same posters who are now coming up with rediculous Cutler trader scenarios. I don't want Jay Cutler I don't want Derek Anderson And I most certainly don't want to draft a QB Remember last year, when everybody was on the Ratliff bandwagon because he performed so well in Pre-Season. Everybody wanted to give him a chance, there were arguements defending his starting rights over Clemens. Now it seems everybody has jumped ship, and I'm the only guy onboard. What really irked me was the Fanzone Poll on NewYorkJets.com which asked fans what they want to do about the Jets QB situation. The most voted was for us to trade for a new QB. I'm guessing this is all the Cutler Chronies. OUR franchise has a reputation for only taking no-nonsense players. No big egos. Sure, Cutlers arm would be just the thing a QB needs in the winds of the Meadowlands. But guess what, Ratliff has a cannon on him too, and he makes good In Game decisions. Plus, we're not going to even be playing in the Meadowlands after next season. I guess the point I'm trying to make, is that in order to truely build a franchise into a dynasty, or atleast a really solid team is to not waiver in your decisions. You can't change your mind at the last minute just because someone "better" becomes available. Ratliff shows promise, and there's no reason he can't become a Pro Bowl quarterback if given the chance. If we take Cutler, Ratliff will just start for another team. I'm excited for this new season, and I'm excited to see what Ratliff can do. I know he can be a leader. He's got the arm, and the swagger. All he needs is the playtime. At 6'4, 234lbs. This is our man! So please. Jets fans.....Show some support for people who are already on our team. Remember Ratliffs first pass EVER. although I agree with you that the incredible amount of dissenting opions that waver from day to day are frustrating at best, you can't build a team, or for that manner a dynasty, based on a preseason pass from an unproven and unknown quarterback who was just trying to make the team last year.
The problem is that this is typical for fans to do. There is no reason to think that Ratliff is a starting NFL QB, making some plays in the preseason is of very little significance as it all vanilla defense against limited talent. We all may HOPE that he is or Clemons is the guy but as Mike Lombardi said "don't confuse hope with a plan" That being said, I dont want Cutler either.
While I do agree. It's my philosophy is that he's unproven because he has yet to be given a chance. I just feel that the longer we pass on our younger talen, the more future draft picks, and players we waste in trades trying to aquire "The Next Best Thing" that's going to bring this team to the Superbowl.
Ratliff deserves a shot. Chances are the coaches have revisited his capabilities already. I don't want Cutler either; I just think the price would be too high. By the same token, Clemens really has never separated himself from average as a true starter. I am not comfortable there. Ainge has basically shown nothing because he was injured when we got him, so he is basically unknown. As always with the Jets; what they ultimately will do remains a mystery. I am sick of the Cutler posts though. One thing is for sure; I think for the first time in a long time the defensive side of our game might be something to really get into.
Wow...do you really think Ratliff is the next coming of Brady? The guy was undrafted and has already been cut once by the Jets (then signed to the PS). Do you think the Jets are that much smarter than every other team in the NFL? If you do tell me why. If they have a chance at Cutler and can get him for just draft picks then they should certainly take it.
Since I have very little short term memory I'm still high on Clemens based on his 07 preseason and 4th quarter of the Baltimore game. By the way who is Ratliff and why are you so high on him?
Kurt Warner.... undrafted qb came out of now where got a SB ring almost got another last year. It can happen why not give it a chance. I want Ratliff to start myself.
Warner came out of arena football and NFL Europe where he played with Jake Delhomme. He was a huge star in both. Not quite nowhere. Yes it can happen again bet the odds are extremely long that it will.
You really blew your argument when you said there's no reason he can't be a pro bowler. I mean, that's a bit much off of one preseason against backups. I agree, though, he has promise. I think Clemens might be good, too, maybe better, but I don't know. The one thing I absolutely agree on is: we've got to go with what we've got. It's how you build a team. The defense is being loaded, it's going to pick up the offense while the young offense, with young QBs and young WRs, learns. Build the goddamn team, we should have done this last year.
I cannot believe there is even one Jets fan that would be against trading for Cutler. Please tell me again what exactly Brett freaking Ratliff has done to deserve a shot? Oh yipee, am I really supposed to get excited over one pass to a wide open WR in a preseason game? This is Jay Cutler we are talking about, a 25 year old franchise QB.
There are plenty of examples of starting QBs coming from out of nowhere (either late round or UDFA): Brady Cassell Romo Warner Shaun Hill Garrard Hassleback Delhomme and everyone knows about 1st round busts at QB. So sometimes guys just need a chance.
but I would still be happy with a proven pro bowl qb like cutler. I wanted him in the draft instead of Dbrick. I was hoping he would fall to later in the first round and we would trade up for him
I like Ratliff (a lot), but he's still an unknown. Yes, we all remember his bomb to Clowney, but that's just about the only memorable moment most of us have of Ratty. I watched him at TC last year and was impressed. Does that make me conclude that "there's no reason he can't become a Pro Bowl quarterback?" Um.... not just yet, okay?
I think if you have a chance at a pro bowl qb you have to take him. Also, if you watched his game against us in the rain and wind in Meadowlands you should definitely want him. There is a big difference throwing in our stadium in preseason in August vs. November/December in the cold and wind.
Fuck Cutler. Jay Cutler, a 25 year old cry baby QB who couldn't make it in Denver. Let's roll with what we got, and pick up #1 reciever.
Yup really looking forward to rolling with what we have to a 4-12 record and the worst offense in the league. Can't wait!
There is more reason to think he will be a solid starter in the NFL right now than not. Pre-season or not he did dominate and there are really not a lot of big question marks about him in terms of size, arm strength or work ethiic. And work ethic was pretty much the knock on Ratliff not talent or upside.
