Hahahahahahahaaaaaaa.......aaaaaaHHHHHaaaaaaaaa........ OHHH.... AHA... I am truly LMFuckingAO over this post......
"Also, I don't think the Jets want to mortgage their future for Cutler. It would likely take at least a couple of high draft picks to land him and the Jets have prided themselves on building through the draft." That lasted two years at most.
You're becoming delusional like Champ. It must be laced in the elderly's diapers. Go ahead and name me one team that has 53 good players who can contribute at any time without there being a drop-off from the starters -- oh yeah, and they all have to be drafted by that team. There's this term called "back-ups." Say it slowly, Don. Not every player can be blue-chip starter. There's salary cap, playing time, etc. The "5 or 6 players" you're downplaying have all been drafted within the past four years. By very definition, that's building through the draft. There are others too; someone mentioned Ellis, and you so wisely said that he doesn't count because he was from a completely different regime. AYFK? I guess Hines Ward doesn't count for the Steelers since he was drafted before Tomlin was there... This roster has talent, both from the draft and FA. That's how teams are built these days. I'm sure that's a concept as foreign to you as color TVs and wireless telephones. Sure we can upgrade, and that will probably happen each draft year. It's funny how you only knocked three guys (Robertson, Brick, and Gholston), yet we're all naming more talented players than just three. Not to mention, the jury is still out on Gholston, and Brick is actually a good LT, so you really don't know what you're talking about. I repeatedly have tried to cut you some slack, but I'm starting to believe you really are this dumb.
If the Jets want Josh Freeman, they'll have to take him in the first round -- I don't know why you guys think he'll fall to us in the second. It's not going to happen.
In recent years I think they have done a nice job building through the draft, aside from Ghoulston but he still has a chance to prove himself.
Wow, I feel like a darksider now. All those guys we listed are good players, and we have been pretty good through the draft, but we've had two top 6 picks, and our return is quite low with Brick and Gholston. I like Brick and all, but the guy isn't that good for a top 5 left tackle. He's a good player, sure, and he still has the ability to get even better, but I wouldn't say he's a franchise tackle. And Gholston...he's got a long way to go to justify being an NFL player period, much less the #6 overall pick. Might he get better? Good chance, but year one was a complete mess. I love Leon, too, but as runningbacks come, where does he stand? That's a serious question. Because I don't think any of us really know. Rhodes and Harris had off-years last year, for whatever the reason, and I don't think Harris has enough of a track record where we can say he's an impact player just yet. I love Revis, and I expect him to be a top cornerback for years to come.
I have to totally agree with Don here. Im not saying its been a failure with the draft but this team hasnt used free agency to put them over the top..or to use as a stop gap. The Jets have used free agency to land stars. Thats a dangerous game. They have done well with the draft..dont get me wrong...but saying the Jets are only about building through the draft is a not telling the truth. "the Jets have prided themselves on building through the draft."...is not an accurate statement and Don is correct.
You need a mix of both. It's more about chemistry then anything else. I wouldn't give up any of our stars but i'd really make a push for Cutler.
Just keeps getting better? Is that what you want from a top 5 pick? Cotchery is a great number 2? Now we are going to do cartwheels with number 2 receivers? When is the last time this team had an actual number 1? Harris...Revis...Rhodes? 3 draft picks? Keller is PROBABLY going to be a very very good receiver/tight end. Hey..Im not a true darksider...but you have to admit..teams that try to build and spend as much money as the Jets have the last couple years are doing so because they have failed to land true stars in the draft. The pieces the Jets have landed in the draft have not prevented the Jets to use free agency to add final pieces...fine tune the team. When you spend a second round picks on qb's or kickers that either dont play...or are not on the team over the past 5 years..you spend money on free agents. Thats just calling a spade a spade...and Don, at least this time, is pointing out a flaw that money is trying to fix..again. I would give Tanny a solid B so far..hes doing ok..its just that B's dont produce superbowls. Lets hope he has the right HC to cover up for the fact that he hasnt had great drafts..hes had good ones.
See my above post. I agree you need both..but mix to me means 50/50...and when you start looking outside for 50% of your starters..you are over spending. I would LOVE CUTLER...but boy oh boy..this would make 3 draft picks in two years trying to get a qb for this team. 1 last year..and I would guess two high ones this year...even more money for us to spend next year to fill voids we cant through the draft. Its a dangerous desperate game to play..and Tanny is betting his career on it right now. It could work...if you are able to build a dynasty type defense like the Bears in the 80's, the Bucs, the Ravens..where you do not need a great qb..but its a gamble to say the least. edit: 1 draft pick last year is this years draft..but I meant for Favre..this is for those being anal.
