NIce call. I was actually leaning towards $2.5 mil, figured the lack of S depth in FA and Ryan's desire would force a little over paying. Nice deal I think, good value, especially if he plays like he did in the playoffs.

That's all he has ever done in the past. He didn't even start every game last year even though Landry was on IR all year. He started 13 including regular season and playoffs. He was paid 520 grand and I see nothing to indicate he should be getting a 500 or 600 percent raise.

He was a starter before last season...that's the difference. They were CB heavy last year and paying 10 million for the guy starting over him.

Or... maybe he can't stay healthy as a starter for an entire season? Because he's never started for 16 games in his entire career.

So what? They were still paying him 3 or 4 million last year and I think the year before that too. Isn't this the third or fourth year of his old contract?

    I'll answer my own question.

Lito Sheppard-Sheppard signed an 8 year, $26,314,000 deal during the 2004 season that included an 8.7 mil signing bonus prorated over 6 years. As part of his rookie deal, he received a 3.4 mil signing bonus prorated over 5 years. His cap numbers are as follows:
    2004: $2,610,750 (480.75K base salary+680K proration+1.45 mil proration)
    2005: $2,661,000 (531K basae salary+680K proration+1.45 mil proration; $8,610,000 dead money if cut)
    2006: $2,742,250 (612,250 base+680K pro.+1.45 mil proration; $6,480,000 dead money if cut)
2007: $2,450,000 (1 mil base salary+1.45 mil proration; $4,350,000 dead money if cut)
2008: $3,450,000 (2 mil base salary+1.45 mil proration; $2,900,000 dead money if cut)
2009: $4,450,000 (3 mil base salary+1.45 mil proration; $1,450,000 dead money if cut)
    2010: $3,700,000 (base salary)
    2011: $4,250,000 (base salary)

a far cry from somebody making 520 grand. The Jets are totally fucked if they are paying Leonhard over a million a year.

Abyzmul, it'd be easier to just start pounding your head into the wall...he's just going to argue in circles until you quit.

Argue what? Do the facts really bother you fools that much? One guy was traded for and making a lot of money. The other is a career backup FA who the coach says looks like the guy who delivers the newspapers. He is a great pickup and a great role player but not for 3 million a year. I suggest you look at just how many players on the Jets are making less than 3 million right now before you embarrass yourself anymore.

I dont care what he looks like.what kind of money he made with his former team, how much he played with his former team. I care about his contribution to the JETS. We have a few rostered players who got the payday here and have done shit since doing so.

Maybe you don't understand the market? And take maybe out of that sentence? Sorry, dude, but 1+ million a year is not exactly a lot of money in today's NFL. Thank you, Daniel Snyder, you are always good to fuck things up at least once every other year.

I wonder if Rex will let him return punts... He was 6th in the league in punt return avg. last year (Leon was 11th)

I would be in favor of that, if it means more touches for Leon in the short passing game...

    He's getting $2 million a year. What's your point?

Jim came into his own last year. He is a play maker. He was the one that had the radio in his helmet and he called the plays. What is there not to like?

I'd be shocked if he'll makes more than $2 mil a year.

BTW Don, the numbers you quoted were old number;. Jets re-negotiated. Also saying he's only making $3 mill this year is like saying Baker only made 600k two years ago. You can't isolate one year of the contract. You have to consider guarantees and total worth.

Don just likes to bitch so just let him. He's well on his way to claiming a lifetime achievement award for being the least knowledgeable poster here.

most sensible post of this entire 9 page debacle.

i am very confident this kid will be exposed and was overrated by most on this board. i am actually fairly if not very confident he will play less than 50% of the snaps this year. i would not be one single bit surprised if elam plays more than him by year end. i also think this may have just been a waste of money.

but who knows, one thing i do know is i am not going to shoot my load over this signing.
