2 first rounders to sign him as a free agent. Whatever the two teams agree on to make a trade. BTW, don't discount Belichik making this deal because he was worried the Jets would sign Cassell and give him the two first rounders. It would have been a terrible move on the Jet's part but every coach is worried about having a QB he developed come back to haunt him down the road. The other thing is that Belichik clearly doesn't worry about the Jets competing with him on a season by season basis because they're just not coherent enough to do that. He's worried about them peaking suddenly in a season and snatching a Super Bowl from him.
Now that Mangini's gone i think Belijerk is not as focused on us as before. I think he hated Mangini more then he hates the Jets, even though he does despise us, but i don't think he could ever stomach losing to a Mangini coached team.
there are plenty of second round qb's that sucked, too. anyone remember browning nagle? or tony banks? or quincy carter? plenty of qb busts everywhere in the draft, including the top, middle and bottom of the first round. for every peyton manning, there's a david carr. for every ben rothlesberger, there's a cade mcnown. qb's have a high bust rate, but that's because it's in general a harder position to evaluate. personally, i don't think this year's crop impresses me. junior qb's typically don't do well and both of the top qb's are juniors. next year's crop promises to be stellar and i'd rather give the qb's that are on our roster a chance first. if they pan out, great. if not, we can draft a much better one next year.
You don't pay first round money in this day and age to get a guy whose role is to light a fire under another player. And Bill Walsh didn't mean you need to draft a QB in the first round every year. Plus he made that comment pre-salary cap era. How many young QB's do you want on this team? Sanchez will make four. How about the Jets find out if one of the three already on the roster can play with a good team in front of them, not the crap that the Jets had on the field in 2007.
As I just posted in another thread, it sure looks to me like Ryan wants a game manager for a QB. A guy who can read defenses, not turn the ball over, and hand it off a LOT, with some screens and other safe plays. Remember Chuck Knox? The HC they called "Ground Chuck"? That is what I expect this offense to look like. If Sanchez is there at 17, I'd expect the Jets to trade down, unless another player they like falls, perhaps Vontae Davis or another player.
*cough* CP *cough* Sorry, I'm going to do this in every thread that mentions that we need an accurate game manager who reads defenses well.
If Sanchez slips to #17 we should take Josh Freeman. He reminds me of Ben Roethlisberger (6'6 - 250 lbs - strong arm - good feet)
I still think the Jets might trade for a QB. They will certainly trade for something if that rumored cap cash was even close to being right. What they are apparently looking at now is inexpensive depth type players in FA. Even with the 5 million for rookie contracts they need to hold aside they should still have plenty of cash to pay for a top tier player at any position they want.
Hope for some reason Kurt Warner is dumb enough to sign with the 49ers then a QB should be there at 17
It's possible Beli-cheat and the patsies panicked because they couldn't tie up that much salary cap in just 2 players (Brady and Cassel) and the sentiment of the rest of the league was turning towards Cassel possibly being a product of the system he played in (and not a great QB), so he gave in to a semi-reasonable deal offered by the Chiefs. I'm not thrilled that they have three 2nd round picks to maneuver with, but it does seem like they got kinda screwed giving up Cassel and Vrabel for just a 2nd, so that's cool.
he does not have good feet, and he doesn't read defenses well if the Jets took freeman with Sanchez sitting there at 17, the place would be torn apart.
Don't forget that Tampa and Minnesota aren't drafting that far behind us and it likely won't take much for them to leapfrog us if Sanchez does fall. If all this Cutler hype turns out to be true then the Broncos with pick #12 will be in the market for a QB as well. That being said the only way I'd be ok with us grabbing Sanchez if he's sitting there at 17 and Maclin is off the board, I don't think he's worth trading up for and I'd like to give Clemens/Ratliff at least one year before looking in another direction.
My home page is saying that the trade put the pats in hot water, yet again: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/sh...tions-Bill-Belichick-did-somet?urn=nfl,144951
Sanchez doesn't make any sense for the Jets in my opion. They already have a couple of "project' QBs on the team. Sanchez and his lack of experience would put him in the same boat. The Jets would be better off to either acquire a veteran (Garcia?) or do what the Pats did when Brady had to take the reins in 2000. Have one of the young QBs just manage the game, and rely on the running game and the rebuilt Defense to do the heavy lifting.
