Cimini writes that he could see some lingering effects of the Patriots trade and how it effects the Jets and the NFL Draft?s Quarterbacks. I think the Matt Cassel trade could have a trickle-down effect on the Jets on draft day. Obviously, the Chiefs (No. 3 overall pick) are out of the quarterback market. The way I see it, only two teams picking ahead of the Jets (No. 17) are in dire need of a quarterback - the Lions (No. 1) and the 49ers (No. 10). That means it?s conceivable - not likely, but conceivable - that Southern Cal?s Mark Sanchez, widely considered the second-best QB after Georgia?s Matt Stafford, could slip to the Jets. http://www.thejetsblog.com/2009/03/02/link-could-cassels-trade-effect-the-jets/
who do the niners have their eyes on? thats really the question. that and if any team ahead of us goes by the best player available versus fit, cuz there are idiot gm's out there that simply take guys that are good instead of guys that they need
I'm not really sure about Sanchez. The guy played 16 college games. I think i'd rather either go WR, DE, or even possibly Safety in the first (although its a weak safety class).
Has anyone considered the possibility of another team trying to trade up for a QB? Sanchez isn't a bad option if he falls into our laps. At least we could have some more fire lit under our QB's asses and there's also the option of having someone available to trade down the road. Bill Walsh always believed in drafting a QB to develope every year. Why not. We will then have to address some holes that are still open on our current roster. We do need more D-line help. Not to mention depth on the O-line. Safety?
Finally someone makes sense. He played 16 college games in one of the best programs in the country with an outstanding supporting cast on both sides of the ball. I cant say I'm convinced this kid is the real deal.
The flaw in looking at "the teams ahead of the Jets" is that virtually every year a team trades up in the first round for a quarterback. Rex Grossman, J.P. Losman, Kyle Boller and Brady Quinn were all drafted by teams who traded up or into the first round to take them ahead of another team they thought might draft them. I think there are some other recent examples; didn't the Ravens move up for Flacco? So for example, the Bucs might well trade up ahead of the Jets if a QB is available at 14 or 15 who they're interested in. As an aside, the NFL resumes of Grossman, Losman and Boller don't exactly argue for taking a QB in the mid- to late first round anyway.
I actually think the Lions are going to go with Dante. So, that leaves the 9ers as the only real team that needs a QB ahead of us. I think there's a good chance that Sanchez will be there for us. But I'm not 100% sold that we will go there, even if he's on the board.
i don't really want sanchez or stafford cause they are unproven nfl quarterbacks and underclassmen, but the 3 teams needing qbs ahead of us were the #1 lions, #3 chiefs, and #10 49ers. the chiefs now have cassell, the 49ers are looking at kurt warner now after the cards couldnt get a deal, and there were talks of the broncos dealing cutler to the lions, which now their FO is saying they want to keep cutler, but cutler doesn't want to be there, so its possible all 3 teams get a qb not from the draft. we could possibly have a shot at stafford, but sanchez definitely. not sure if other teams will draft stafford for talent and not for a need. we'll see.
I want us to find a way to get B.J.Raji. Look at how the defense faultered when Jenkins got fatigued. We need a decent back-up NT, who can spell Jenkins and one day take over. NT is the most important position in the 3-4. Raji has great size and might even be able to play 3-4 DE. But I wouldn't mind going WR or S either.
The more I think about it, the more I think there is something wrong with the Cassell trade (and I heard Mike & Mike this morning arguing about the same thing). A second rounder for Cassell? Why? He's certainly more proven than either of the guys being discussed here for the 2009 first round. Why not multiple picks or at least a 2d rounder this year and one next year? I think thr Cheaters didn't get enough in return (not to mention Vrabel thrown in there) and the Pioli connection suggests that something funny is up. M&M said that Tampa offered the Cheaters a lot more. I'd love to know what they offered.
rumour is there was a 3 wayy deal that sent cutler to the bucs, cassel to the broncos and picks to the pats... which was like a 1st and 3rd but they backed out because they already had a deal in place with the chiefs
I think I read somewhere that the Buccs offered/were going to offer a first and a third. Not sure how this whole thing played out, but it does seem like the Chiefs got the players for a steal, which is okay with me.
Yeah, the 17 pick is not good enough to get a top tier QB prospect unless most of the teams have miscalculated the player's value. Mid first round QB's who have prospered: Joe Flacco Chad Pennington Jim Kelly That's a really short list and it depends on a guy who just got picked last year, a guy who got hurt and has never taken a team to the top level and a guy who got some seasoning in the USFL before he hit the NFL. Early second round however is full of great QB's: Drew Brees Brett Favre Randall Cunningham Boomer Esiason There's something different about the early second as opposed to the mid first. I think teams are more prone to reach for a QB between 13 and 24 and just hope he's the real deal. By the time you get down to the second round a QB who has most of the goods just gets snapped up because nobody can believe he fell that far. If Sanchez actually drops to 33 you are going to see an enormous bidding war going on for the first few picks in that round as people jockey for position to grab him. At 17 he'd be a decent pick for a franchise with no established QB but at 33 he'd be a steal.
MAC QB's are generally pretty safe to draft, especially in recent years. They play in very similar offensive style to a typical NFL QB and they don't have these crazy athletes some of the bigger schools have to make them look better. I'm not too sure about anyone coming out of the MAC conference this year, but Sanchez and Stafford are not guys I would want to draft. But if it came down to it, I'd go with Sanchez simply because he came from USC. USC has produced good QB's in recent years (Carson Palmer may be the best in the league if he ever had a team around him, I feel Leinart would be good if Warner was not there, and look at Cassel, I mean the Patriots obviously saw something in him if they drafted him and he never played in college).
Nope. Don't want to waste a 1st rounder on a QB (or even a WR to be honest). Clemens and Ratliff have a right to try, and if all goes to Hell, there are 'serviceable' free agent names out there that won't cost an iota of the $ that a 1st round QB will cost. Sure, I'm concerned. I wish Clemens was a few inches taller. Wish we coulda had a better O-line in '07 to gauge him as a (potentially more effective) starter. I just hope he has the smarts that Penny has. If the arm is there -- though I think we'll be the team of screens -- and the smarts are there...we're golden.
The Cheaters cheat but they are smart. If this was on the table, they would not have gone through with the trade to KC for a 2d. Something smells funny to me. I wonder if there is some kind of handshake arrangement with Pioli that results in something else coming to the Cheaters down the road.
