Maybe its me>>but when you compare teams like the Colts, Steelers, and Giants as model franchises, I think their success was largely in part due to the fact they found a franchise qb in the draft. Look at the Colts>>where would they be without Horse face Peyton??? Had he come out in 1997, we would have had him with the #1 pick (stupid Archie wouldn't like him play for The Tuna)and the Jets would be the ones always at the top of the division. Colts got Peyton the following year with the #1 pick in the draft. They had to be an aweful team to get that first pick. Look at the Steelers. Yes, they were/are a well run organization, but were able to get the Huge WR Plaxico Burress with the #8 pick in 2000 (They really wanted Chad, and there is a story that after day one of the draft..Stone Jaw from te Steelers offered Plax to the Jets for Abraham & Penny...story continues with Tuna offering Penny for Plax and the Steeletrs # pick in 2001) I digress a bit...In 2001 the Steelers were lucky to have a good QB class and drafted Roethleiesberger with the #13 (?) pick. Again..you can't be alll that great a team to be picking that low. As for the GMen..They overpaid McKensie with a huge $36M contract when they got him from the Jets. Stupid money at the time. Someone pointed out that they got Eli for basically through a trade, which was a very good trade for the Chargers. Remember..the Giants picked #4 that year, again..how good a team could they be to be picking that low..

Point is Myers is a tool. Yes, the Jets have been spending good money on players in FA. Yes, the Jets haven't been able to get the dominant franchise qb through the draft; although, I think Penny was a great pickup at the time, and the 2 shoulders injuries really hurt his career. Who remembers the Browning Nagle years?? For my $$$, I'd call over the Broncos and make them an offer for Cutler, since those dummes let the cat out of the bag and snooped arround looking at Cassel. That would be the bold move. Short of Stafford out of Georgia, there is no one in this years qb class that can step it up to be a dominant qb. Just my humble opinion. Tanny has turned out to be a much better gm than any of his predecessors like Bradway (lets trade our 2 #1s for Dwayne Robertson) or Parcells who threw out huge dollars on over the hill fa's (except for Curtis Martin and Vinny Testabverde)

I'm still waiting for your response on how Gary Myers article was accurate.

I almost always agree with you, but not in this case. Every pick is not going to be great, no team is able to do that, but for the most part the Jets got quality guys where they needed them.

2006 - Offensive line is the building block of a successful team, we got two great ones. On top of that, we ended up with Leon Washington, possibly the most electric player on this team, and still could potentially have our franchise QB from that draft, however doubtful that looks. Brad Smith also has been a very productive special teamer for us, which should never be discounted.

2007 - Sure, we gave up half our draft to get our two guys, and sure, we could've had 4-5 good players with those picks, but instead we got two premier top end talents, including one of the league's best shutdown corners. Shutdown corners aren't grown on trees, and there are very very few who play with the lockdown ability of Revis.

2008 - Gholston was a colossal bust in the 2008 season, but I don't think his road is going to be the same as most busts in this league. He's VERY lucky that the Jets acquired a coach that will utilize him right, and I truly believe he's going to turn it around and become a highly productive player, possibly even worthy of his draft spot. The way Mangini had Gholston trying to play was nothing short of an utter disgrace, but what do you expect from someone who thinks they can win with a 1-2-8 defense. Lowery was also having a pretty good year until he got burned out a bit - he'll be fine. Strait did all of nothing in his time here.

Tannenbaum is by no means a Hall of Fame GM, but his picks have been very good for the most part. Every GM in the league has a laundry list of busts, it comes with the territory. You never really know what you're going to get in the draft until they begin suiting up over a long period of time. He's done the best he can with what the Jets have had and needed.

Don't even respond to BR4. He just wants people to repsond to his post and will say anything to fire people up becuase he would be ignored any other way. You can't judge last years draft for another year

Well, we got a starting left tackle, a pro bowl center, and a pro bowl return man. We traded down to get Kellen and got a 2007 second rounder that we traded for Thomas Jones and another second round pick. If that is blown, I wish we'd blow the draft every year.

You do build through the draft but there is nothing wrong with spending money in FA.

Its about finding the right players for your team. That doesnt mean just using one resource (Draft) to find those guys. If Bart Scott is a good fit for the Jets then why wouldnt they go out and try to get him?

What teams like the Cowboys do creates a lack of team chemistry but thats because of the personalities they have in the locker room and things like that.

Also trades in my opinion shouldnt be counted with going out and "buying other teams players" because your giving them draft picks back. Why wouldnt the Jets trade a 5th round pick for a player like Lito Sheppard? Are they going to find a player of his caliber and potential in the 5th round? I doubt it.

Of course Gary Myers uses the Tom Brady 6th round argument. He really makes it sound easy lol.

If you have a chance to upgrade your team and the move makes sense then you do it. You go out and find guys that you think will fit in well with the players you currently have on your roster. If you think you can find those players in FA then thats fine.

Continuity Starts with the Coaching Staff...

It is hard to build consistency when you have several different coaching regimes over a decade of seasons. Each regime is anxious to differentiate itself and proceed with its own strategy and its own guys. To this day, a lot of people think Gruden went to the Super Bowl on the backs of Dungy's team.

How long does it take to build a team? The average NFL career is less than 4 years, I hear. On a team, most every player's clock is ticking from a different starting point. Time does different things to different people.

If the coach is going to take advantage of the people he has, and he's going to do it his way so that "win-or-else" owner and his fans don't come down on his neck "prematurely", well, then, the HC doesn't have forever does he?

The FO and the CS need to thank their lucky stars that the owner wants to win bad enough to spend money. Free Agency gives the team a chance to take maximum advantage of the team you already have.

    Think about it.

Comparing the Jets to the Redskins is not ridiculous and the teams have been very comparble on the field. The Jets and Redskins are both far from competing for a SB.

The O6 draft are biggest need was QB and OL. We traded Abe for a second OL and picked two OL players who we are paying big bucks to and they are solid starters. We outright blew rounds 2 and 3 and you can argue that Cutler should have been taken ahead of DBrick and we could have got more OL help in rounds 2 and 3 since we needed a guard and a RT as well as a LT. Last years draft outright sucked. The year before we got a stud in Revis but we moved up twice and gave away picks, that's okay but the team still has major holes and we simply have not gotten as many players out of the draft as we needed to rebuild. That's the reason we need to spend big in FA. Are drafts have not been productive enough.

I don't get Winston's take either. Keller isn;t the full package? How many TE's are? Witten can block now, but he could not when he was a rookie. Gates and Gonzalez have never been what I would call good blockers. Winslow and Davis can't block.

This team NEEDED a TE that could create coverage mismatches with LB's.

I really don't get the critisism. These days you build through the draft and FA. Trades play a role.. like Thomas Jones. Farrior was not drafted by Pittsburgh. Neither was Bettis. Even Rothlisberger, although drafted, was traded for.

Look at AZ... Warner was an FA. So was Edgerin James. So was half of the offensive line. Meyers like Cimini has always bashed the Jets. Looks like the Jets played out the entire Moore situation perfectly, but Meyers has to say they got lucky instead.

The Redskins? Pul-eeease. There is no comparison. They over pay at least two players a year, sometimes more. We might, and I say MIGHT have over paid two players, but if Scott does what we hope he can do, he won't be over paid either. Sheppard is cheap... unless he gets that roster bonus next year, but he'll have to play at a near pro bowl level to ever see that money.

I wonder what Meyers said about the Favre thing last year? As I recall, he thought it was a GREAT idea... now he takes pot shots at it. He's just another hack who knows he can't get any attention unless he writes negative stories.

You do realize Kevin Mawae who we cut was All Pro last year not Mangold and Abe was an outright beast last year. I'm happy to have Mangold and wasn't sorry to unload Mawae but we didn't add much to our roster in 06 if you consider what we dumped.

All Pro is based a lot on reputation and not production.

My take is you get the QB and build the team around him. Tannenbaum has ducked this for 3 years now. The Giants get their man and built a SB team around him, so did the Colts, so did Pittsburgh, so did NE and that's what the Chargers also are trying to do.

I wanted Cutler bad and we had him and passed. I would have loved to try and make a move on Ryan last year and was killed for it. We could have made a move on Flacco but no dice we moved up for a TE who dropped passes all over the place and dissapeared down the stretch. Talented, yes a great rookie not even close.

I think we have drafted okay not great when you consider the depth of those drafts. I think we have done okay in FA but I don't think we are going anywhere until we address the QB because at the end of the day, Tom Brady, Payton Manning, Cutler, Rivers, Rothlisberger are going to beat us in a big spot when the D simply can't hang on by itself.

Mawae was a cancer in the locker room, and so was that dillweed Abraham. Everyone seems to forget that Abraham's first two years in Atlanta he did nothing... he was always hurt. 2008 was the first year he came close to living up to being a pro bowl DE.

I seem to remember Abraham sitting out a playoff game because he was not willing to play on a bad knee. He went on to say his career was more important, but he also said he could have played, but chose not to. Now pople want to lament his departure? Remember him puking on the sidelines? He had the "flu". More like a hangover.

    Revisionist history.

I don't have any gripe with them drafting Vernon. He was clearly the choice to take at the time based on what he had done in college/combine. My gripe with them drafting the kid is that they made him change what he did well in college.

I know I am going to get trashed for what I am about to say but, the asshole made a valid point on one issue. While Gary Myers is way off base about saying the Jets and the Redskins are two peas in a pod they are not and the players many of you mentioned, prove this.

Yet, the Jets do continue to bring in guys who are well past there prime and not worth the money or roster space it cost the team. This is what I like about the Scott & Sheppard signing, as they are younger players who we should get a few solid years of leadership and service from.

Over my many years I have seen the Jets bring in guys who at ONE TIME were above average players only to come here and prove that there former teams were correct in not resigning them. Our latest of course was Mr Farve, who folks are now making excesses for and trying to explain why it did not work out.

Personally I don't give one hoot why it did not work out, in retrospect and maybe with more research, prior to this trade, the Jets should have seen this was not any kind of long term solution. I know last year was a bit unqine with the coming of Woody's PSL and the need to sell his overpriced seats. Yet still, the Jets had to see that after so many seasons and also so little time to prepare Brett was breaking down .

Now I see Rex coming in and it looks to me he and Tanny are beginning to cut out the dead wood and wasted roster space.

While I agree with Myers we must build thru the draft and develop our young core players from the same base, we also must be wiser in signing FA's. I don't agree with him and his argument that we are trying to buy a championship. It is my firm belief that football is damn near the only sport where you cannot, as so much depends on chemistry and interaction with your fellow mates, which can only be built with time.

So no more over the hill Vet's looking for one last big pay day no more B. Farve's , Cowards, Lott's etc.. only guys who will be around long enough to build that chemistry, for this is what builds championships.

I would also point out to Mr Myers and my fellow fans the old saying " He who laughs last, laughs loudest ! Lets all see just what this "expert" has to say this coming season when the Jets are once again in the hunt and others have to take them seriously.....

Yes, in spite of our QB situation I believe the Jets will make the playoffs this year because I also believe one of our younger kids Clemens or Ratliff is going to step up. An had we not had Mr Farve aka, yes I'm hurt, but not leaving the game at QB this past year, we would have made the playoffs...

We have most of the pieces in place right now and with what is being added, this has the potential to be a very dangerous team. It really amazes me that " expert Myers" does not recognize this.....

Good post, edge. Fans don't realize how good we have it. We have a very solid team on paper. I'm excited about this upcoming season.

I like Tennenbaum too but don't defend him by using it as a soapbox to rip Abe. Abe had a legitimate knee injury during the 2004 playoffs. The Jets PR staff weren't releasing the right information about it. It was serious. We had a poster in here awhile back who talked about how serious it was. If he played, he would have been ineffective and possibly a liability.

Blame that all on Mangina. Rex Ryan will fix that problem. Watch and see.

I also wanted Cutler. But leave Brady out of this... he did not have any resemblance of being a franchise QB when NE aquired him. Rothlisberger is over rated. He takes far too many sacks. He isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer either. Riding a sports bike without a helmet in downtown Philly?

This is a bad year to be drafting a QB. Sanchez is going to be a bust, or at best a long term project, and Stafford will be long gone. Let's see what we have.

It's funny how when players like Flacco, Cassel and Ryan surprise everyone and play well early on, but then go on to say our young QB's have no shot whatsoever?

    I miss the logic.

I didn't use Abraham to defend Tanny... I was reminding some of the folks here who have recently started to lament about Abraham that he is not durable, and any player that misses as many games as he does isn't worth the money he gets paid to rehab all the time.
