The Miami Dolphins didn't wait until Friday's start of the free-agent signing period to address their need at strong safety.

FOXSports.com has learned Gibril Wilson has agreed to contract terms with the Dolphins. Further details weren't immediately available.

Wilson became available when released by Oakland, an unexpected move considering he was signed to a six-year, $39 million contract in March 2008. Wilson finished last season as Oakland's second-leading tackler with 129. Wilson, 27, spent his first four seasons with the New York Giants and was a starter on the team that defeated New England in Super Bowl XLII.

Both of Miami's 2008 starting safeties — Yeremiah Bell and Renaldo Hill — are set to become unrestricted free agents at midnight Friday.

The Wilson signing is the third major personnel move Miami has already made this offseason. Within the past week, the franchise also inked right tackle Vernon Carey and linebacker Channing Crowder to multiyear contract extensions.

gay if they resign Yeremiah Bell also theyll have a nice secondary in place.

long as they lockup Hasim Goodman at CB too.

I think this was a real nice signing, Wilson had a good season with the Raiders. Not to metion he has SB winning experience. Miami needs help at the FS position which is where I think Wilson will play if the Dolphins resign Bell.

I would have preferred Wilson over Leonhard but since its clear that Leonhard has ties to Ryan i cant complain much.

The Dolphins do seem keen to take positive steps to make sure they're competitive again next year...

I think the Dolphins have to be the clear favorite to take 2nd in the East.

well I always thought if you're released from a team u can sign when u want because your not waiting on your contract to expire since you're not under contract no more.

He was released and not under contract with anyone, therfore he can sign with anyone at any time. FA's on the otherhand are still under contract with their teams giving their teams exclusive rights to negotiate a new contract, it's why it tampering to talk to players on ther teams that are FA before the FA period begins. Once FA begins, all URFA and RFA are free to sign with the highest bidder, RFA earn compensation if signed by another team depending on their tender.

Well, that isn't a good thing for the Jets. All we need now is for Coles to sign with the Fins.

    Great signing.
Bell and Wilson, pretty solid safeties, not ALL STARS, but very solid.
If only we sign Brown, we will be good!
    Plus there the Draft!
God i cant wait for the draft.

Tuna knows how to find good football players, period. Sparano got a hell of a lot out of some borderline talent last year, if the Phins stay healthy and infuse more talent on the squad (which is just inevitable with Tuna) that team will be nasty.

I wish Parcells would leave and move on to another team already :)

Phins IMHO have the best secondary in the division at this point- Goodman is also a very good corner. Of course, FA could change that as could the coaching change in New York. Rhodes is much, much better than what he turned into with Mangini. Revis is the best corner in the division by a fair margin though. Hopefully, the Jets get some safety help and possibly another corner so Lowery can play nickel.

Personally I would be uncomfortable with a gerbil on the Jets.
