http://www.thejetsblog.com/2009/02/19/news-jets-resign-wright-add-cb-further-cap-clarification/ The Jets have re-signed special teams monster Wallace Wright to a one-year contract extension for 535K and have also signed CB Marquis Cole to a minimum level (310K) one year deal. The undrafted twenty five year old Cole is very raw but has incredible speed (reportedly in the 4.18 to 4.25 range for the forty) and has been on several practice squads, with time spent at Oakland, Tennessee and New Orleans Wright has been one of the best special teamers in the league for the past three years after the Jets picked him up as an undrafted free agent out of North Carolina. In cap news, Hutch admits he was starting to doubt his own story, so he sought confirmation from a league official who unequivocally confirms that the Jets are about 15m under the cap, with the only unknown being whether the cap will actually be slightly less than $124m (presumably because of the final cap adjustment re: bonuses). Hehe, he's got an amazing 40 time, of course he spent time with the Raiders.
Very happy with geting Wright back on the team again. If we didn't have the amazing Leon, we'd have him as our primary ST guy. Could be pound for pound the best signing for our off-season.
It seems like Westoff should have the tools he needs to run good special teams. I hope this unit remains solid.
who knows, but what I do know, is you cant teach speed. Very few guys in the world have that kind of speed. Granted timed speed means diddly shit. Look at Gholston, he had great timed speed at the combine and so far has had awful game speed. hopefully he turns out to be a little diamond in the rough, by becoming a decent ST guy, and maybe a good Dime back...
Now just keep brad smith on special teams and stop lining him up at receiver. Let him focus on what he's good at, which isn't catching footballs. Great job tanny. Wright should have been a pro bowler last year. Lets do it this year.
Great move...his importance is underrated by a lot of people and he helps soo much with the field position battle.. 4.18?? that's ridiculous...too bad it sounds like thats all he can do
I'm glad that Ryan and Co. are now going after fast players like Cole. Even if he amounts to nothing, it's the right idea. This team desperately needs Defensive speed. I wonder if this philosophy has any draft indications, or is it too early to tell?
