This is from an old thread from the draft forum and I've brought this idea up a few times long before Favre retired but now that he has I think it's appropriate to bring it up again. I know I've gotten bashed for this before but I still think it's a valid idea worth consideration. I know there is a chance that Baltimore wouldn't trade him but I think it's worth looking into.
not as bad as JP Losman or Vick, he has more potential than Losman and a better person than Vick.... I don't want to trade for anyone, these picks are needed. All of them. I think we all need to wait after april to see what we are dealing with... the what ifs are just beginning to kill this forum and the collective football IQ of those who actually have it.
6th-7th round. But its still a matter of him learning the offense and then has to be a 10-13 win QB. I'd don't want game manager, I want a clutch leader.
People are talking about picking up a punter in this forum with our 6th or 7th round pick; http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=42445 and no one thinks it would be a good idea to instead trade that late round pick for a guy who is in my opinion better than Sanchez or Bradford who would require a first round pick.? And Ratliff or Clemens could start the year out giving Smith more time to learn the system and would be a viable long-term option later in the year if Ratliff/Clemens stink it up or next season. At least if it didn't work out we wouldn't be wasting first round money on him like we would if Sanchez didn't work out. And I really don't want another guy approaching 40 aka Warner, Collins, Garcia etc.
^ I always think that people are afraid to draft and would rather trade for what they think is a sure thing... and they play Madden way too much as well. I see the point in bringing these people in, but they are question marks as well.
Maybe as a third competitor (I don't see Ainge as a serious competitor this season) to Ratliff and Clemens, but I wouldn't just hand him the reigns, and I've been a huge supporter of Troy Smith being in the NFL.
Rex Ryan was on that team and knows why they drafted Flacco. I am guessing it had something to do with they did not see a starter on their team, including Smith.
Why do we always think players on other teams are better then our own? Get Leftwich, and let him back up Ratliff after he beats out Clemens in TC. End of story.
I loved Troy Smith in college (this was before I went to Penn State) but remember the receivers he had on that team: Santonio Holmes and Teddy Ginn. He wasn't fitting balls into tight areas, he was launching them and Holmes and Ginn would go up and get it. He doesn't have great mechanics, and I don't know if he has the arm strength to succeed in bad weather. He wouldn't cost much, but he's not an answer. Smith will never be a starting NFL QB.
Smith is a decent player, but I think he'd only really be helpful in the Wildcat offense and trick plays. I'd rather bring in a slightly older veteran with more experience but not up there in age.
van we please stop tryin to sign or trade everyone...we need our OWN swag and were not going to build a super bowl team threw free agency or trade.
I'd love for us to trade for Troy Smith. He is a very solid QB, and he could come in and bring more options to the QB competition.
theres a reason why he didnt get drafted until the 5th round, he simply does not have an nfl skillset. He was a nice college qb using his legs, which he wont be able to do in the pros. Did you see him in the combine? He looked terrible doing NFL drills, he couldnt throw the ball accurately enough nor strong enough
This was exactly what I was thinking. He could be a huge asset in the Wildcat and a very good 3rd QB.
an interesting thought, but the only way I'd do it is if we traded either Ainge or Clemens for Smith. We have 3 qbs to look at--we don't need 4.
