Ok, let's get this out of the way right now. Clemens is not going to be the QB and for anybody who has actually been listening the past two years this is not new news. Rather then have 150 thousand Clemens vs. Ratliff threads, let's nip it in the bud here. They will draft, trade for , sign a FA or Ratliff will get the job. Those are the options. "The team is unconvinced that Kellen Clemens, a former second-rounder, is capable of being Favre's replacement." http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3898942
How do you plan on getting the first pick in the draft? Sanchez is a little more likely but he is very unlikely as well. I would bet that we go into camp with veteran FA, Clemens and Ratliff battling it out to be the starter.
If the Jets upgrade the defense significantly via FA then I'd expect the veteran QB to win the battle
While Favre retiring does free up alot of cap space, it does leave us in an interesting situation for 2009. Lemons and Bratliff are not the answer. Therefore, thinking about our next QB, the following points come to mind: -Does anyone know anything about Ainge? Does he have potential? -I've heard people mention names like Warner and Garcia. Please. Do we really want another borderline AARP member as our QB? If we wanted to go that route we would have been better off with Favre. -I've also heard Leftwich's name thrown around. Theres a reason he didn't make it in Jacksonville and is now forever a backup. I'm tired of getting everyone else's sloppy seconds. He's not the answer either. -It's pretty much a guarantee that at LEAST one of the two top QB's in the 09' draft will end up falling to #17. Detroit looks like they will take one of the awesome OT's and the only other team with an immediate QB need is MAYBE the 49'ers. Are Stafford or Sanchez worth a shot this year, or are we better off just winging it with what we have for 09' and holding out for the 2010 draft which looks to be an excellent year for QB prospects with the likes of Bradford, Snead, Tebow, McCoy, etc?
The Jets basically need a stop gap QB for this year......I'm hoping they target their "franchise QB" in the 2010 NFL draft (Bradford, McCoy anyone?). Maybe Clemens isn't the long term answer...but i'm sure he's capable of "handing the ball off" in a "run-heavy" offense the Jets plan to implement for next season.
It's way too early to predict either way. We have a brand spanking new coach who, I'd imagine, will want to see both Ratliff and Clemens for himself before any determinations are made. Good old fashioned camp battle.
I believe that Ratliff should compete for the starting job. From what I saw last pre-season, I'd like to see more of him. With that said, I'd like to see Clemens get the opportunity to compete also. We need to start looking for a QB that will last with this team. Hopefully Matt Cavanaugh can find the QB with the right stuff.
Maybe I'm biased, but I definitely would like to see what we really have before we go out hunting for a new QB. A back-up veteran I'm ok with, but I'm with you, give these kids a chance before we throw them overboard.
Releasing Clemens makes no sense at all & signing Garcia even less sense. Clemens costs basically nothing and has talent, you would just be asking for disaster by releasing him.
Nobody is going to like this very much, I don't myself, but don't be surprised if the Jets don't trade for Anderson. He would probably cost a 3rd or 4th and with Mangini there I can see that happening.
So you are saying Clemens and Ratliff are not the answer (without giving an explanation as to why either one isn't) then suggesting Erik Ainge??!?!?!?
